Are you able to get 100% on your first run though or do you need the NG+ characters too?

For the regular story you can get 100% first play through but like 1st comment said, you have to be glued to a guide.
For creature creator, you cannot get 100% on first play through since certain “creatures” are not available on 1st play through and can only be obtained on NG+.
At least that is my understanding. Feel free to message me if you have more questions, I just did 100% for both the story and creature creator recently and loved it.

You can get 100% first time through as long as you are glued to a guide and don’t mess up anything.

Ok well now I might be wrong. I looked at KADFC’s guide and they say this. “ I knew I was going to start and complete this via NG+. I also advise others to do the same, but it can be done from New Game, if you want. You just don't have to worry about the storyline completion percentage and you probably have everything already. So we are just soley concentrating on the Creature Create (CC) part of the game.
However, there is a REAL reason why it should be NG+ Only: - Many FFX Characters can ONLY be captures in NG+”
Either way, I did it in NG+ and it was nice to not have to worry about 100% story and creature creator at the same time
