In Final Fantasy II, should I have each character stick with only one weapon type? I have Firion using a sword, Gus with an axe, and Maria with a bow. Considering how leveling works in this game is it best to stick with one weapon type for each character or branch out a little?

ID: hxy95mv

Yeah probably, and don't touch magic cause you need to grind constantly to be up to date with it.

ID: hy24yli

Depends on how much you want to grind, but yeah sticking to one weapon is easiest. You don't lose stats (unless you're playing the PSX or NES version) so you can experiment. You just gotta grind up your skill in each new weapon type.

So I'm currently playing FF7R (got it for PC this week finally). I put in easily 1000+ hours to the original FF7 back in the 90's when it came out (it's actually the reason I got a Playstation in the first place). All this time and this game just showed me something that caused me to ask a question that I'm genuinely shocked I hadn't wondered about before..

There's a point where you pick up a red Summon Materia, and Barret makes a comment about "I wonder what's gonna come out of this one?". With that in mind, I'm now genuinely stumped. Do they actually not know what a Materia does prior to it's first use? The color gives away a hint, sort of, but that still doesn't help a lot.

It gets exponentially worse in the case of Summons, because how do you test that safely? You "could" be summoning something like Carbuncle, which is very small and perfectly harmless. Or, oopsie, maybe you're going to summon Bahamut Zero and wipe out half the continent you're on.....

So there's the question; Is there some way they know what a Materia does without using it?

I am looking into playing FF1-6 but I have heard through some grapevines that these are very hit and miss on versions to play. What would be the best way that I could play all of them? If I could get them all on one device, that would be ideal but I won't be picky.

ID: hy1pbxt

The pixel remasters on PC and mobile are probably going to be your best bet here.

ID: hy2r6c2

The pixel remasters are excellent, and are all available on Steam (PC).

I think they are available on PS4/5 and Xboxs too iirc.

ID: hy23b2d

The only ways to get them all on one device is the Pixel Remasters on Steam and the mobile versions. Mobile versions are mostly garbage. I, II, and IV have their best versions on PSP but the other three are not available. (III had it's 3D remake released for PSP but only in Japan.) V and VI had PSX versions you can play on PSP but they're awful.

So yeah until the PR games get console releases Steam is your best bet. If you happen to already have a PSP go for those.

5 : Anonymous2022/02/23 08:14 ID: hy2sk8c

Probably asked numerous times but what time does FF6 pixel remaster release. There was no time listed at any of SE's tweets or anything.

ID: hy2yi96

6 : Anonymous2022/02/24 03:30 ID: hy6xset

Anyone know if Final Fantasy 6 Pixel Remaster will have cloud saving?

7 : Anonymous2022/02/25 02:10 ID: hybsb2y

Does ff6 pixel remaster have a max level option? I really just want to go through the story again and not worry about grinding.

8 : Anonymous2022/02/22 18:30 ID: hxztt9y

Pixel remaster, I though I heard the rumor it would come to Switch

Any confirmation? I hate Mobile gaming for FF games like that and im not a PC player

ID: hxzzmqt

There has never been confirmation about the Pixel Remasters being ported to any console. It's pure speculation. I don't think it's unlikely--the Switch is the perfect console for Pixel Remasters--but Square Enix has been silent about it so far. If it were to happen, I wouldn't expect any announcement until at least a few months after Final Fantasy VI comes out.

ID: hy473jh

While nothing has been confirmed, I expect there will be a console release eventually.

They've hinted that they will consider it if there is enough demand. And surely they must know there is enough demand. Remasters of other old games have come out on Switch, so surely their flagship franchise will too?

This is just speculation, but I think it's a pretty safe bet. The question is when really.

9 : Anonymous2022/02/21 18:09 ID: hxuy7s1

Can we really say that events in the games that released 20+ years ago are really spoilers at this point?

ID: hxvin6b

Yes they are

ID: hy31z8o

its in the rules of this sub. spoilers do not expire.

we get a lot of new players and we want them to have as much of a spoiler-free experience as possible.

ID: hxv3zti

yes, when FF7R was released there were a lot of people asking a lot of question about it like "How is Zack?" or didn't even know that FF7R is just part 1 and get confuse for all the "other scenes" and events in the original FF7.

for example for me, anything from Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings is spoiler, never really cared to watch any of thoses.

ID: hxvz7xm

how hard is it to use spoilers?

10 : Anonymous2022/02/21 22:39 ID: hxw2ls8

Can't decide if I should use a walkthrough/guide for these pixel remasters. On one hand I want to experience the game without knowing what's ahead, on the other I don't want to miss anything...

I just beat FF4 last night and I started to use the guide closer to the end, but for the most part avoided it and had an amazing experience with a game I never played before! The story was awesome...

So yeah, I don't know what to do. Going to start FF6 for the first time tomorrow and not sure what to do...

ID: hxw2u3p

Just play it without a guide for the first time, and if you liked the game a lot, redo it in a year or two with a guide.

🙂

ID: hxzajj8

For FF6, if you are not a completionist I would say try with no walkthrough. There are actually quite a few things you can permanently miss, but it's nothing major. To avoid missing most of that stuff, once "Floating Continent" appears (no spoilers) you can check a walkthrough for missable content.

ID: hy31vcz

if its your first playthrough, i'd recommend playing blind as it makes for a more enjoyable story/gameplay experience.

if you do want to play for completion you can always play again from the start. some of them do have missables so having to hassle over it the first time round, whether or not you use a guide actually takes away from it

11 : Anonymous2022/02/22 08:31 ID: hxxy0uy

I'm looking to get back into World of Final Fantasy, but not sure if I should just grab the enhanced version (Maxima) and start over or just finish wherever I left off in the OG version. I can't quite recall where I stopped, but was just wondering if the enhancements warrant starting from scratch or not.

ID: hy24iwi

Most additions are endgame stuff or minor QoL changes. You're fine to just keep going with your save.

12 : Anonymous2022/02/22 11:57 ID: hxyd47a

Since FF is known for it's storytelling but me being a gameplay-first kind of guy, I got two questions for this entire subreddit.

Which FF game do you think has the best gameplay/game design? Which FF game do you think has the worst gameplay/game design?
ID: hxydryo

Best: FFV. While its strengths may not be immediately obvious, there's a reason it has endured so well that there's literally an annual charity event where people just play FFV over and over again.

Worst: FFII. While I don't think it's as bad as some people make it out to be, and there are people who love it for what it is: It tried to do something different, and there's a reason why no other Final Fantasy game tried to do what FFII did, and there's a reason why the SaGa franchise, which is based more on FFII's design, is relatively unheard of. Even with the improvements made over the course of the SaGa franchise, the style of game design only appeals to a small audience.

ID: hxydd56

FF13/10/7 for the best gameplay imo.

14 if you like mmo style gameplay, it is pretty good amongst mmo (just not until level 40/50, before that it's a snooze fest).

ID: hy0jvp7

Indirectly answering your question, 8 has the most unique gameplay IMO. It's divisive, you might hate it or you might love it. It is rather story heavy though.

13 : Anonymous2022/02/22 15:49 ID: hxz4qrk

In the pixel remasters, can I play all music in the music mode from the start, or does a track not unlock in that mode until I have heard it in-game?

ID: hxzbeju

99% sure they're all available from the start

ID: hy31ooz

they are all available from the get go

14 : Anonymous2022/02/22 23:12 ID: hy121du

So does FFVI PR drop in an hour?

ID: hy15jz6

Approximately 17 hours, according to the Steam store page.

ID: hy2r7xz

in 10 hours and 4 minutes.

15 : Anonymous2022/02/23 01:52 ID: hy1njri

Would anyone be able to tell me how far into FFXIII I am? I am currently making my way through The Fifth Shard and just fought the two giant red machine enemies.

I'm not trying to rush, but as I am playing on gamepass, and with Elden Ring coming out, I feel a bit of pressure to finish before it is removed.

ID: hy23sao

Roughly 2/3rds.

16 : Anonymous2022/02/23 02:57 ID: hy1w7vh

Just finished FF3 PR, but missing the all locations achievement. I have 3 chocobo forest on floating continent and living wood. I have 7 chocobo forest on the other world. I don't seem to have missed any when I look at guides but still haven't got the achievement. Anyone have a list I could compare? Seems unlikely I finished the game, got all chest but not that one

ID: hy3dp91

Found them, were missing 2 chocobo forest.

At which time does FFVIPR release?

ID: hy3gd83

based on the steam page, around 11am EST.

19 : Anonymous2022/02/23 16:57 ID: hy4bwl3

Do the mobile pixel releases use same virtual joystick as the normal ones? Not a fan, would be ok if there was an option to have it stay in the same place on screen

ID: hy4c6ui

It always stays in the same place. There’s also an alternate control scheme where you tap where yo want to go.

Get FF6 pixel remaster for phone or steam?

Ps4 Controller compatability for steam is a huge plus. But at the same time, I travel a lot so portable gaming on my phone is convenient. Overall it's a wash for me.

What do you guys suggest

ID: hy9fbi9

Steam has the benefit of mods, which is particularly important given that the included font is uncomfortable for many to read. Applications like Rainway and Steam Link allow you to stream the game from your PC to your phone. And portable devices like the Steam Deck and AYA Neo are small PCs you can take with you on the go. The mobile versions lack controller support, and the streaming method allows you to connect your controller to your phone via bluetooth and have controller support (i'd suggest using a clip like this one:

Overall if I was in your situation I would get the Steam version, but ultimately you know your situation better than me.

21 : Anonymous2022/02/23 21:10 ID: hy5fwij

Does anyone thing the Final Fantasy 1-6 bundle will be cheaper during the planned Steam JRPG sale? The current 20% discount will expire on March 10th and then the Steam JRPG sale is March 14-21

Can't decide if I should get it now at 20% off or if it would actually be cheaper during the sale... I don't think final fantasy titles usually get a really good discount on Steam so I'm leaning towards just getting it now.

23 : Anonymous2022/02/24 17:55 ID: hy9p6vr

Is it possible to mod the Pixel Remasters of 1 and 3 to replace the spell charge system to the mp system of every other game, and if so how difficult is it?

24 : Anonymous2022/02/24 23:00 ID: hyb1sx1

If it is possible nobody has done so yet, and if it's possible it would be very difficult.

25 : Anonymous2022/02/24 22:11 ID: hyaudvv

If you're looking for a classic styled game where it's a more medieval setting, but with Magic powered technology and simple story then Final Fantasy IV is the perfect starting point. Not too grind heavy and it has everything people think when you think of Final Fantasy. The first 6 Final Fantasies and Final Fantasy IX are styled like this.

If you looking for a more modern RPG with Sci Fi themes and a complex narrative then Final Fantasy X is the perfect starting point. Every game besides the already mentioned ones are styled like this. I say modern but Final Fantasy X is 20 years old now, but if you end up really liking the characters Yuna and Rikku X was the first game in the series to get direct sequel.

Some further explanation I already said the first 6 games and 9 are in a similar style, but in reality Final Fantasy VI itself is actually more of a halfway point between the two distinct styles but leans more into the classic style. XI and XIV are MMOs and as a result are very different from the rest if the series. XI's servers are mostly shut down with only the pc version still having active servers and even then they aren't too active.

26 : Anonymous2022/02/24 21:13 ID: hyakx6n

10 is generally regarded as the best starting point. Visuals are fairly modern, voice acting, linear, turn based. All the core components that make an accessible game in the series.

27 : Anonymous2022/02/25 05:11 ID: hyceqbq

3, 4 or 6.

5 is a bit hard and the job system can be confusing.

28 : Anonymous2022/02/25 22:50 ID: hyfy806

If you have some experience with other JRPGs already, FF6 Pixel Remaster is excellent, go for it. Otherwise I'd tell you to start FF with the FF4 Pixel Remaster

4 is a simple yet engaging game, a neat sample of what JRPGs offer for someone new to them. You don't have to do much managing of your characters, the mechanics, character roster and upgrades are on rails. You just fight, equip and heal. In contrast, other FF games require you to manage your party, customizing the way they fight and how they get stronger.

• FF1 has you set up a party at the start and throughout the game you buy them spells, and what you can buy depends on what characters you decided at the start. You could, in theory start with this one because it's the most barebones experience and then move onto FF4.

• FF6 and FF7 are on the lighter side, you must pick a currently-active party from a roster of available characters, and customization is based on magic-teaching items: you gotta grind a character with an item equipped to learn spells (FF6) or grind the item to make it gain spells which can be used by whoever is equipping it (FF7).

• FF3 and 5 are very heavy on party customization, with the Job System.

• FF2 has no levels and you raise stats by doing the stuff the stats control: for example you lose HP to raise your max HP, you attack to raise the attack stat.

• FF8 is just too weird to be your first one.

• FF9 is newcomer friendly, but it's a tribute to the older games, so it works better if you have some FF experience.

• FF10 is a great game but it's the first modern fully 3D, voice acted FF. Also lacks the illusion of freedom the older titles give you, the story is pretty much on rails.

29 : Anonymous2022/02/24 22:27 ID: hyawwlv

Does the pixel remaster of FF6 use one of the pre-existing English translations, or a new one?

30 : Anonymous2022/02/25 06:46 ID: hycnxpd

It's the Slattery (GBA) script with a small number of changes.

31 : Anonymous2022/02/25 22:38 ID: hyfwglx

It's a slightly modified GBA script. As far as I can tell, they removed a couple of cringe lines.

Also I think some NPC lines were rewritten to be clearer, but don't quote me on that, maybe it's just my memory.

32 : Anonymous2022/02/25 06:52 ID: hycohbd

Anyone else unable to play FFXII ZA on PS5? From a quick poke around google it sounds like it needs a patch.

33 : Anonymous2022/02/25 07:44 ID: hycstcs

Playing FF6 PR and just got to the train. Was having lunch, and wanted to see everyone's scenes. However, changing the formation doesn't change the player model.

What am I doing wrong?

34 : Anonymous2022/02/25 12:52 ID: hydhws9

The Pixel Remasters track the player model separately from formation. You can cycle through by hitting L/R, or the keyboard equivalent.

35 : Anonymous2022/02/25 12:35 ID: hydg21u

Does the battle speed option in FF6 PR still only affect enemies?

36 : Anonymous2022/02/25 12:55 ID: hydi8ax

No. The Pixel Remasters use a slightly different ATB system from the originals, and the battle speed option affects everyone in battle.

Also, in the original version of FF6, battle speed only affected party members, not enemies.

37 : Anonymous2022/02/25 18:22 ID: hyetcrz

Does the FF6 Pixel Remaster have 2x Speed? I saw a Fast Forward icon in the top left corner during battles while watching gameplay videos - is that just the autobattle?

38 : Anonymous2022/02/25 19:33 ID: hyf4dxd

That's just the autobattle, yes. However, the Steam version can use the Memoria mod, which has a built-in speed up option.

39 : Anonymous2022/02/25 22:07 ID: hyfryju

(salt warning)

why is Final Fantasy IX so fucking difficult? I'm routinely getting waxed by every boss and even the enemies do shit tons of damage. like all of my characters get 2HKOd by every boss and it takes so goddamn long to do anything that by the time one of my characters needs to be healed I'm already balls deep in queued up commands and I don't have time to heal before the boss finishes the job. Plant Brain took me like five tries because he would kill me from near full health before I even got the chance to get a heal off. now I'm fighting wizard fucker #3 on the deck of the airship and I can't do it!! he will send two of my characters to critical health with one spell and then before I can heal the second one he kills them. then before I can revive the dead character he kills another character. it feels fucking outrageous! should I be grinding from the very second I start the game? where do you even grind in Dali? am I just garbage at the game?

40 : Anonymous2022/02/25 22:26 ID: hyfuo2e

FF9 isn't especially difficult, not trying to be a dick. If you aren't running from battles you shouldn't need too much grinding. Learn all your abilities before you move onto the next and at least try and steal some goodies from bosses early on.

Don't queue up so many commands, keep your healer on hand for when you need them. Pass turns with Vivi or use focus, or make him a backup healer with items instead of piling up that queue.

You can train outside or underneath Dali a bit if you need to.

I will say the beginning is harder because you can't choose your own party and your equips and abilities are limited.

41 : Anonymous2022/02/25 22:44 ID: hyfxegk

Are there any rumors FF6 is coming to Switch?

42 : Anonymous2022/02/22 22:52 ID: hy0z2td

Has there been ANY word on if the special weapons in Stranger of Paradise can be gotten without a digital preorder? I want to get the game physically but I don’t want to feel punished for choosing to do so.

43 : Anonymous2022/02/23 10:20 ID: hy31nl9

typically no. preorder exclusives tend to be timed, which means that they will likely be released to everyone, but at a much later date.

44 : Anonymous2022/02/23 15:39 ID: hy3zw53

Which Battle for Dream Island character could replace Aerith after she died

45 : Anonymous2022/02/23 18:01 ID: hy4lvno

Is it possible to add things as comprehensive as the Enuo fight or the Dragon's Den dungeon to the FF5PR and FF6PR? I don't know anything about modding, which is why I ask.

46 : Anonymous2022/02/24 16:30 ID: hy9bo6h

You would have to add a significant amount of assets for the Dragon's Den, between new monsters, equipment and maps, so I think it would kind of have to be a DLC from SE.

47 : Anonymous2022/02/24 23:13 ID: hyb3vgs

Possible, maybe. Likely, no.
