Hello, everyone! First off, our apologies for being a bit late to the party, but the Pixel Remaster edition of FFVI has at last been released! Is everyone enjoying the game? How do you feel it compares to the original version? Or the GBA update, or mobile remasters?
For the time being, at least until activity settles down, let's please keep all the VI PR discussion contained in this megathread! Existing submissions will be kept as they are, so we'll only start enforcing this on VI PR threads submitted after 19:00 (or 7 PM) UTC
Please keep things civil, have fun, and enjoy discussing the game, everyone!

I haven't had this much fun playing any other version of FFVI other than when I first played it when it released on SNES. This version is great. Still have a wishlist... the main thing being make it entirely gamepad usable. I'll deal with getting off my couch to go hit enter for changing their names, but it'd be nice to have some means to input a name and select it with a controller.

I like how you can execute commands with other characters while Cyan is "charging" his Bushido
ID: hyfmiugthat is a huge QOL improvement
ID: hyfv3joHow does it work? Do you choose his attack, then he just performs it on his own when it's charged? I've always liked using him, but the charge time ruined it
-
Only change I have noticed that bugs me (and I know it is so nitpicky):
In the original when killing a boss the screen would flash twice (in sync with the lightning sounds). The lightning sounds are still there, but no flashing. Instead boss just instantly starts crumbling away.
Minor minor gripe I know, but I noticed it.
ID: hyie3akI noticed this too and feel the same way. The animation is consistent with the other PRs, which I like, but I wish they would have used something closer to the original SNES animation in all of the PRs
ID: hyt2fxrI have a feeling this might have been done after the 90s seizures that kids were going through with flashing lights and animation
-
QOL features are great. Being able to equip items in shops, can switch out phantom beasts etc
Cyan's Bushido not having to charge is a big plus.
ID: hyflkoeDefinitely like being able to change equipment of dead characters
ID: hyg73ubBlitz headers too, auto-combat and running

Yeah im loving it as well. Characters are pretty damn cool and have great designs. Learned quickly that kefka isnt a fool but a madman. So far my top 5 favs are 1.) Sabin 2.) Edgar 3.) Kefka 4.) Shadows dog 5.) Shadow.
ID: hygxhs9Sabin and Edgar are always my favorite no matter what version of the game I play. They are so versatile.
-
Fun glitch/exploit: When you have Gau Leap on the Veldt, his equipment gets flagged as not in use, allowing you to equip the same items to another party member.

Just cleared it, and seems to me to be the definitive version of the game. There will be purists fans with nits to pick (and I have some of my own, mostly with music/sound), but I don't see much reason to play earlier versions at this point, especially once some bugs are fixed. I will say it's substantially more challenging than any of the other official releases. Maybe on the level of the Final Fantasy IV remake, assuming the player doesn't take on many of myriad ways to break the game later on.
Noticed some content changes:
1) Everyone raises both arms now instead of one during Gestahl's speech (Terra's flashback scene very early in the game).
2) Edgar's (infamous) line with Relm at Thamasa was changed again.
Previous: "Not even a lady yet... Here's hoping you're still around in eight years, kid."
Now: "They grow up faster than you think... You'll break a few hearts when you're older, kid."
3) They changed one of Darill's lines in her race with Setzer:
Previous: "Or are you too entranced by my lovely behind...?"
Now: "Or are you too entranced by my wiggling rudder?"
Both of these lines are unchanged in the Japanese text, but I played very little of it in Japanese, so it's possible there were some small changes somewhere (or others in the English localization that I missed).
The last one's a little weird. They obviously wanted something less suggestive, but Humpty and Dumpty are still there for Cyan in Nikeah. Lakshmi and Goddess have their original graphics, too, while Siren is still covered up. Maybe someone over at SE has a strict "no butts" rule?
ID: hypxit4They also didn’t have the guards beating the shit out of Celes in South Figaro. Don’t know why they’d change that.
ID: hysp4i0None of Edgar's lines in the translations are matching the original Japanese one: "That would be illegal. I'd better not."
Guess SE wanted to avoid any possible cancelation. Anyways, I like the new line, it's cute.
But I can't understand the removal of the butt lines. The PR removed a couple cringe lines but left Humpty and Dumpty, which is a cringy as hell way to say "look at my boobies"

Anyone else notice a bump in difficulty for the game? I’m at the part where you fight the tunnel armor after rescuing Celes as Locke. Every other playthrough of the game and that battle is a breeze, just keep doing Runic with Celes and Locke can casually chip away at the boss’ health with no threat of danger. But in the PR the boss acts much faster than before AND throws in physical attacks as well, which I don’t remember it ever doing as often. Is it just me?
ID: hyl589pMany others have reported similar behaviour. At Normal and slower battle speeds enemies seem to act a little more often than you. Many enemies use their rare attacks more often. And many enemies, mostly bosses, chain their special attack into a normal attack with no delay. That last one might be a bug. It definitely makes the game more challenging.
ID: hypxpczI was fine with the tunnel armor, but died to the Phantom Train five times (even with ribbon!) before I said “fuck it” and Phoenix Down’d him.

If anyone is still on the fence, I can confirm as a huge fan of the SNES game that this remaster is solid. The new localization is a pleasure to read, the arranged soundtrack is GORGEOUS, and the updated visuals are giving me major nostalgia, especially with the SNES font modded in. I'll probably never play the original SNES version again now that I own this.
ID: hyh6b5whow do you get the SNES font?

Patch was released today for Steam.
We have fixed the following issues. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused by these issues.
Fixed an issue where equipment that is equipped by a specific member who is not in the party can be temporarily equipped by another character, such as Gau with his skill "leap" We worked on fixing this issue with high priority as the game may have issues loading any saved data that experienced this issue. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused by this issue. An issue where the game may not show some event scenes properly under certain circumstance. We are still investigating this issue and will take action. A rare issue where battle progression gets blocked under certain circumstance. We are still investigating this issue and will take action. Fixed an issue where actions during Auto-Battle become inappropriate right after a specific piece of equipment is changed. Fixed an issue where the game sometimes does not proceed correctly after loading a Quick Save data that was saved under specific circumstances. A rare issue where some monsters at the Coliseum might drop items they were not supposed to.Other minor issues have been fixed as well. More updates are planned moving forward.
Sounds like the Gau temporary-duping-bug was fixed and could have caused save corruption. I'm not sure what issues the others are referring to, but it sounds like they do have other fixes on the way as well.

In general I'm having fun, and the music is amazing, but I'm running into some annoyances. First, Steal is absolutely atrocious when it comes to rare steals. It shouldn't take me over half an hour of stealing every 10 (less, really) seconds to get a rare item at the same level (that damn bandana, or some weapon for Cyan in a boss), with the appropriate relic on. It sure as hell ain't 1/8 or 12.5% or whatever.
Second, I'm going for a full bestiary, and now I'm screwed because Air Force won't summon a Bit. Apparently I'm not the only one with this issue. So now I'm stuck until this somehow maybe, MAYBE gets fixed (and SE + fixing their PC releases that aren't FFXIV = lol) or not be able to get the full bestiary I've already been working hard on. Blegh.
ID: hyl5v7vYeah I don't know what's up with Steal but it's definitely off for chasing rare steals. My bet is that they copied the common / rare odds from FFV (123/128 and 5/128) rather than the original FFVI's (112/128 and 16/128).
ID: hypr2m3To get the Bit to appear you have to kill the Laser Gun only and then whittle down Air Force's hp until it spawns. Took me so many attempts to get it but at least you can quick save right before you fight Ultros.

Just beat it.
Not really sure why people are finding this version so difficult; I found it much easier than SNES and found myself getting OP pretty quickly. FF5 PR was harder imo.
Not as buggy as V at launch, but still had a good few moments of locking mid-battle.
While I’m totally biased because 6 is my favorite, this is the first PR I beat where I’m actually a little bummed that the GBA content isn’t intact, just because I want more of it haha! This is the definitive version though, imo, if I were to choose. Fuck this game is so good
-
I just bought it, and I'm at the point right after the party leaves Zozo. From what I have seen, the game is amazing. My only problem is that in the original, I was pretty sure that the exp. points weren't divided by the number of party members, at least that's what I remember. In the old version, I don't remember having to grind so hard during Sabins quest into the Phantom train to get him to level 15 for his Fire dance. Maybe I'm remembering wrong, but still a 10/10 for me. It has always been my favorite FF Game, and everything looks and plays like the original.
ID: hyflg5lThe amount of xp has always been divided by remain ing alive party members. A difference is the original shows the divided xp at end of combat, while or shows the total undivided xp at end of combat
ID: hyfyulfI just passed the phantom train and sabin is only lvl 11.
ID: hyhkq9sNah I vividly remember grinding Intangir with solo characters just to level them up quicker.
I was a kid so I wasn't great at math lol

I'm on my way to the returners camp. Have a team ofn4. Trying to use Locke to steal some bandana and mythriol claw. But my steal rate is so low. Locke is level 11 and monsters 8-9. I believe the rate should be 1/8 * (50 + 11 - 8 or 9) % or /128?
ID: hyhgg1yI'm not an expert on this and looked it up the other night because I was getting frustrated with the same thing, so maybe I can help.
His success rate is: (50 + Locke's Level - Target's Level)/128
if you pass that check, it has a 87.5% chance of stealing the common item and a 12.5% chance of stealing the rare item. if the enemy doesn't have a common item, but you fail the 12.5% check for the rare item (in the case of stealing the bandanas from Zaghrems), it will just tell you "couldn't steal"
so basically, with your levels you have a 5.08% chance of successfully getting a bandana with each attempt. (if my math is right)
considering it only provides an additional 2 defense and 1 magic defense to your stats (assuming you have the best gear available in South Figaro), it's not worth the time invested and will be obsolete soon after anyway.

I'm at the WoR beginning and the first fish I got Cid is dead lol anyone got this?
ID: hygde29Only collect the fast fish if you want him to live (though contextually the scenario is much better if he dies imo)

I have my own question here, there's a location icon down by (I believe) Tzen on the southern continent. Is that the Phoenix cave or something else? Can't seem to get to it so I'm hoping it's not a location I'll miss
Edit: Maranda, not Tzen. So no idea what it could be
ID: hyheeixIt's probably the chocobo stable hidden in the forest.
ID: hyhgta5I noticed this too and someone mentioned it is the location of the crashed airship later in the game but I can't confirm.

Wait, did they take away the ability to change your menu backgrounds?
If so, that's a shame. It's not the most necessary thing, but some of them looked really nice, a lot better than the default blue gradient.
-
I cannot believe the level of effort they put into the new soundtrack for this $18 game. It is exquisite.
The original FFVI is my favorite soundtrack of all time (the American CD version, "Kefka's Domain", was my first CD album -- $60 in 1994 dollars), and I treat this music as spoilers, so I haven't heard anything past the three split scenarios yet, but I'm just blown away already.
Not only did they do an incredibly faithful job with almost every single song I've heard so far, but they actually doubled the length of a bunch of tracks by having two different instrumentations for each loop! I have some quibbles, but they're like, a note here and a note there. It's better than I could have ever expected, especially after the disastrous GBA music.

Does anyone know if any of the achievements are missable/involve collecting missable items/doing missable battles or anything like that?
ID: hyhh882there are missable chests and bestiary entries (like most the other games), which have achievements related to them so if you are going for 100% achievements, for sure keep an eye on that stuff or use a guide. if you don't want to use a guide, you can see how many chests/items are left in an area using the world map. using the bestiary at the main menu, you can see how many enemies are left in an area as well. not sure if there are any other missable achievements though.

I’m kind of underwhelmed. Now I will say, I got ff6 for Christmas in 1994, and it’s been my favorite game of all time since then. To me it’s the gold standard for Japanese rpgs, a masterpiece. So I’m gonna be a tough crowd.
So far, I think the graphics look worse, aside the pre-rendered battle backgrounds. Some of the music is better, some I don’t care for the arrangement. I am pretty disappointed the way bosses just kind of … die. The two flashes and cracking sound in the original was superb. I always loved how fast paced the battles were in 6, and unfortunately the remaster has input lag, so that sucks.
I’ll give it a chance and always enjoy another excuse to play the greatest video game ever made.. but yeah super mixed feelings so far. I’m sure its impressive to the casual gamer and I have too much nostalgia and feelings, but I never thought there was anything wrong with the original game. I kind of feel like ff6 and Chrono Trigger and probably stuff like Terranigma shouldn’t be touched. You have to understand different teams would be working on it today and it wouldn’t feel the same.

Dear mod, I have a question:
Since September 2021, I have been creating polls in this subreddit asking our members the current best version to play the 2d games in order to gather data, information and opinions.
I did it from I to V and was planning to create this final poll on March 2nd (exactly a week after the official release)
Will I be allowed to? Since this megathread implies you guys want the discussion to be focused here, I don't want to break rules or anything
Thanks in advance!
ID: hymtk1tFor future reference, it's best to send questions related to subreddit moderation in modmail rather than just post them in thread, but we'll discuss this. I imagine it won't be problematic
-
It's my first time going through the game. Just finished the opera house segment. Absolutely beautiful, and I love Ultros.
-
I'm sure its been mentioned elsewhere, but the Celes interrogation scene in South Figaro has been cut so doesn't have fidelity to the original SNES release. Battle animations seem to be off ie: enemy doesn't move as its hit by aura blitz. The team overall did a good job, but I think hitting those loose ends will make this faithful to the original product.
-
Anyone have a full list of locations? I’m pretty sure I got them all but I didn’t get the achievement, not sure what I’m missing. Also not sure where the last chest in Kefka’s tower is. The wiki says its “outside on the path to Demon” but I can’t find it at all.
-
Anyone else encounter lots of Behemoth pairs in the Floating Continent? Pretty sure they used to be 1 in 64, but now they're my most frequent encounter! I think they swapped these guys with the two Ninjas, since I've yet to run into them when they used to feel pretty common.
Update: It took almost 3 hours to encounter two Ninjas, the last hour of which was just immediately teleporting away from every encounter. My new consipracy theory is they won't show up if you have an Alarm Earring equipped. I took it off and found them about 10 minutes later.
ID: hyq8p5jI didn't encounter any Ninjas at all I might jave used an Alarm Earring but the FC is an absolute joke in this version when you spam it with Catoblepas. It's like a 90% hit rate I've only missed 1 guy in the entire run and it's one of those Ing dudes.

Magi Master doesn't cast Ultima upon death in PR.

You could use software like JoyToKey to assign a button on the controller to correlate with Enter, as a workaround. Needs a true fix of course, but in the meantime, this will do.
