X.
I never had a Playstation growing up so I missed out on the entire Final Fantasy series until VII hit Steam. And VII was great no doubt but it had also been out 15 years at that point. It was SO famous in cultural context. I basically knew exactly what was going to happen. Twists didn't land as well as they should have. Sephiroth was kinda disappointing vs. what I'd been expecting (Cloud's story was damn solid though).
By contrast I knew absolutely nothing about X besides the memes about Tidus laughing and I was not prepared for the places that story was gonna go lol.
ID: hyf75mhX was my first Final Fantasy game. It absolutely blew me away and it's still my favourite 20 years later. Sure it was campy and cheesy, but when it hit, it hit hard.

FFVII
Plain and simple, this was my first FF game and there is nothing I wouldn't give to experience that first playthrough magic again for this game.
All FF have a magic about them, but VII is the Ultima of the FF magic sphere.
ID: hydt8r3Agree. Even now, over 20years later, one of the clearest memories I have is gaining Bolt2 in the Corel mountains, getting out of the ice caves after City of the Ancients and the music from the sector 7 slums plays in crystal clear quality in my head. The wonder of my first play can never be achieved again and with every playthrough, the complete knowledge of what comes next voids any excitement. I wish I could...
ID: hydww8wFinally getting to the end of disc one, leaving midgar and I was like, "O sh@# there is an entire world to discover now?!"
Went into the game blind and was blown away.
ID: hyeb83ktrue story
when I first came out, I raced thru the game, trying to be one of the first to beat it.
I missed Vincent. kept getting these weird guns no one could equip, but never found him, nor any hints he existed lol
ID: hyecnbjStill have fond memories of "Attack while the tail is up..."
ID: hydx0qwThis is the only answer.
I always wish that I could have experienced learning that Aerith would never come back and discovering that Cloud was never part of SOLIDER again. No matter how much I replay the game, these two magical moments would never be captured again.
ID: hyeecu0Definitely my answer too. One of my most nostalgic feelings is just being out in open world map, probably somewhere on that stretch from midgar to junon, maybe in the menu, just sitting there listening to the overworld music play over and over. That main FF7 is so incredible

6
ID: hye59hlSame. I shortchanged myself when I first got it because I was 13 and dumb and used a Game Genie. I hate myself for that.
ID: hyffr17Playing the Locke in South Figaro sequence for the first time was mind blowing for me, such a cool part of the game, really wish I could experience it for the first time again.

FFXII. I remember driving to college only to find out all classes had been cancelled due to snow. For some reason I decided to swing by GameStop on my way back home. Picked up MGS3 and FFXII. I played about 2 hours of MGS3 and was very hyped to continue playing, but decided to play a little bit of FFXII to see what it was about. Spent the next 4 or 5 days on 15 hour binges of FFXII and it became one of my favorite games of all time.
ID: hyecmtvThis so much. I have a few 1000s hours on this game but it still amazes me every time I play it.
-
7 original
ID: hye103vI had so much fun with 7. I'd want to replay it in context though, while in the same point in my life that I was lol.
It was very early in my access to games, one of the first I ever played. It was incredible. I was so engrossed by it.

FFX-2 , it’s my favourite and also the first FF I completed as a kid
ID: hyf09x8Oh goodness, there's another person like me!
Technically FFT was my first FF, but I understood that didn't represent the atmosphere of the main series. Not that magical girl style job changing necessarily does either, but FFX-2 still holds up for me in gameplay. Best implementation of the ATB system in the series. The story is also ok once you get past chapter 2.
Yuna blossoming into a strong-willed bad ass makes sense....even if her outfit doesn't. I played FFX right after getting the bad endings to FFX-2. I still cried at the twists in FFX even though I knew what had to happen.
-
FfIX, it's my favourite game in the franchise. There were so many moments I'd love to experience again. FFX is a close second. I still remember my reaction when you first learn about Yuna and the Final Summoning at Home.
ID: hydu9mpThe Yunalesca scene hit so hard though. You see each character’s faith completely broken And then the Bevelle scene after that, realizing that it’s always been a scam the maesters have been in on CHILLS!
-
XIV was just incredible when I first started in 2015, constantly learning and trying new things in game.
Currently at end game and I just log in to cap tomestones and run raids, post expansion is always kinda dry till the first major patch.
ID: hye7ni9I already can't wait to new game+ my way through Endwalker when it's available.

FF VIII
It’s not quite my overall favourite, but I LOVED exploring that world, and the whole Balamb Garden student aspect.
ID: hyefje2Super random, but the clopping sound that Squall and the party make when they run around with their boots/shoes is one of the most satisfying sounds to me.
I remember having no freaking clue what I was doing in FF8 after having only played 7 (and being like 9 or 10 at the time). I must have never trained GF or used Junctions the right way and just focused on leveling, because I never got even a little close to beating the boss "Mobile-type 8" later in the game. On later revisit of the game, that boss was a cakewalk and had no clue why I never made it past him.
ID: hydrje4Agreed. I absolutely adored exploring Balamb, Galbadia and other areas so much. Plus the few overworld quests as well as Triple triad in general, just made for such a unique experience that would be lovely to experience again for thr first time.
ID: hyef3e0That's my favorite! I liked the unique things in it that they never brought back like the draw system, paychecks and junctions. Triple Triad thankfully still lives on!
ID: hyeg874I think that game hit me at the perfect time lol, was mad young and first played it on my friends portable PS1 (the one with the screen built in)
Harry Potter already had me convinced with the fantasy boarding school aspect… FFVIII combined that with my first time seeing badass anime fights and the like.
I only played an hour or two at that time but the memory stuck with me more than almost any other game.
ID: hyeto4dI'd say the same, I really liked the world, and the story and all of that, and I'd love to experience the story for the first time again.
But I'd have to argue the game itself is so much more fun after you've played it a few times, and know how to properly use the junction system, and how to find the best magic to use for junctions, and how to best manage your GF's abilities and what they're learning.
Also, it's not super clear that enemies scale with your party's level, that would have been great to know the very first time I played it as well, I went out of my way to grind a ton to get all of my party members up to like level 50 before the end of the first disc.

Most of the boss fights have some trick to them, such as casting Thunder to stop Cagnazzo's Tsunami or stealing from Rubicante to stop Inferno. I really enjoyed figuring out all these fights on my first play through, but now that I know the strategy the fights are much easier. I can't think of any other FF game where so many fights are made easy just by knowing some specific trick, so I vote 4.

ID: hyer4frI would kill to relive the awe and wonder I felt hearing the music and taking in the world the first time I played 13.
-
VI
-
FF6. I want to experience Sabin suplexing a train again.
-
Only all of them. Finding out for the first time is just priceless for any game.
-
XII. Not because it's my favorite, but because it's not one of my favorites. I feel like maybe if I got a second shot, it would hit differently and I'd appreciate it more.
I wouldn't want to erase my first playthrough of one of my favorites, because I'm a different person now than when I first played them, and I might not come to love them as much as I did then.
-
X
I feel for most the answer is going to be the one you played first.
-
God. I mean, I'm happy having the depth of understanding of multiple playthroughs, but a lot of these games have emotional impacts that blew me away:
FFIX, FFX, FFXIV:Heavensward and Shadowbringers would be the top 4. Chrono Trigger and Cross get honorable mentions as just being sublime games by Square.
-
X and XIV for sure.
-
11 or 12. These were my first step into the FF universe. My cousin was a huge fan of 11 and played it all the time, and he gave me his copy of 12. We played a shit ton of 11 together, and it’s actually why I got into mmorpgs. He since passed away from epileptic seizures, but I still think of him all the time while gaming.
Also 7s prequel, Crisis Core. I freaking loved that game, and played it long before I ever played 7, so needless to say I am HYPED for 7Remake part 2. Part 1s ending had me losing my shit.
-
Honestly, 10.
It's hardly my favorite, but it's the one where my first playthrough was my favorite playthrough.
FFTactics (GOAT), FF6, FF12 all get better with each successive playthrough.
But my first time traveling through Spira was perfect. I'd love to get that back. If only I could play through it without my modern sensitivity for the rough voice work.
-
Definitely gotta be 10, wish I could play it blind again.
-
VI. Still my favorite game of all time. Maybe nostalgia-fuelled a bit, but so be it.
-
XIV Endwalker. X is a close second, but Endwalker is just such a masterpiece conclusion to the XIV story.
-
FF9 or FF6. I love the characters so much.
-
Either VII or X. My personal favorites in the series
-
Final Fantasy 12. It's fantastic

Failing at that first real level over and over again went from impossible, to slowly figuring it out, then actually understanding/winning, to "how much JP can I grind attacking/healing the last enemy over and over again?"
