r/JRPG Weekly “What have you been playing, and what do you think of it?”

Please use this thread to discuss whatever you've been playing lately (old or new, any platform, AAA or indie). As usual, please don't just list the names of games as your entire post, make sure to elaborate with your thoughts on the games. Writing the names of the games in bold is nice, to make it easier for people skimming the thread to pick out the names.

Please also make sure to use spoiler tags if you're posting anything about a game's plot that might significantly hurt the experience of others that haven't played the game yet (no matter how old or new the game is).

Since this thread is likely to fill up quickly, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts.

I started FF XII. I've been an Ivalice fan so I like the universe a lot. Only the spaceships are not to my liking. The plot is okay so far but I'm just a few hours in. The fighting system is... still a bit weird. But I can see I need more characters and gambit slots to get the best out of it. I like the PP/skills development for the party. Not amazing but still enjoyable so far.

I forgot to comment last week, so today I'm commenting on what I've played these last 2 weeks:

---

Final Fantasy VII Remake (PS4)

I finally beat it! Last part of the game was the best. Things started to take a new direction, and I wasn't very convinced at first. But I liked the ending and am excited to see what will happen next (although didn't they say that they weren't going to make big changes to the story in the next part(s)?) It's true that some things weren't necessary at all. They wanted to make a grand finale and it shows. But a great ending to a game whose story is going to continue doesn't need to be something like they did here.

Anyway, I loved the game. It deserves to be called GOTY of 2020. I'll replay on hard when the PS5 version is released this summer.

It took me 47 hours, doing all possible sidequests and optional content.

---

Final Fantasy VII (PC)

I wanted to start replaying it after the Remake, but I'm not very motivated to play it. I'm playing with Gjoerulv's Hardcore Mod, which makes the game harder. I had tried the mod before, but I'm starting all over again.

---

Final Fantasy X (Switch)

After not playing for practically an entire month, I resumed it. I'm at the last part of the Calm Lands.

---

But now I'm focusing on a game that isn't a JRPG, but it's worth mentioning here: XCOM 2. I'm liking it a lot, much more than the first one. Specially playing with the expansion. Japanese SRPGs could learn a few things from it (specially map design and variety of objectives); also the alien invasion setting is something I have never seen in JRPGs.

In regards to FF7R, they've (at least since) confirmed they're going down the rabbit-hole and switching things up, which makes sense given it's a sequel. Pretty sure any statements suggesting no major deviations were part of keeping the ending a secret.

Still continuing (slowly) on playing Final Fantasy VII on the PS1. My wife isn't much of a gamer, but she really has wanted to experience the story and the game. So, she sits on the couch and watches me play. She's a keeper. Progress is slow, as it seems we only have an hour or two each night together, and not every night is spent playing FF7. We've just gone out of the mythril mines, recruited Yuffie, and are parked outside Junon Harbor. Not much else to add from my last writeup, but I did note a bit of frustration with the targeting during battle that I do not recall. Perhaps it is the fact that I'm playing on a PS2 instead of a PS1, or the fact that I'm using a controller cord extension cable, but at times in battle, I just can't seem to get the cursor to target the enemy I want. It seems to have a mind of its own. I don't remember this being much of a problem before. I don't recall it being an issue in FF9 when I last replayed that either, so I'm guessing it may be my hardware, or an issue that Squaresoft fixed in later entries.

Since progress was slow with FF7, in my spare time I picked up Criminal Girls 2 on the Vita (don't judge me!). I played through the first game on a whim a few years back, and despite some skeevy parts of the game, I actually found a decent story and battle system buried in there. Despite some of it's...less savory parts, I enjoyed it, so I figured the sequel might be up my alley. It plays incredibly similar to the first. You have a party of 4 (out of 7). The girls do level up with XP from battle, but there are no weapons or armor to buy. They learn various skills through some very fanservice~y minigames. Honestly, if this is your thing, more power to you, but I could really have done without it. The skills you can use each round of battle are somewhat random, but there is some context to them. For example, if a big party-wide attack is coming, one of your characters may prompt for a skill that reduces or negates incoming damage for a turn. One difference from the first game is that you now you have the ability to use the 'coach' command during battle. It will raise affinity with some party members, and decrease with others, so it can be a double edged sword. I did not find myself using it much. The game is far more difficult than the first, almost to the point where it came down to some dumb luck on certain bosses whether I would get decent RNG with their attacks and skills proffered. If you enjoyed the first, you'll like the second. I just wish it didn't have the pervy minigame elements in it.

Fixed camera in settings may help cursor a bit, IIRC

Persona 5: Strikers. It’s great so far, though I haven’t had much time to put into unfortunately.

6 : Anonymous2021/03/12 13:09 ID: gqopdca

I'm replaying Trails in the Sky FC (again). Some things that have struck out to me:

It's not as slow as I remember it, even from the last time I played it

In some scenes something about Joshua just feels kinda...off. Maybe I'm just used to him from later in the series or something, but it just feels kinda weird.

The portraits aren't quite as good as I remember them, especially the status menu portraits

Generally, I'm enjoying the character writing way more than I did in any other playthrough. And I've always loved the character writing, so enjoying it more than that is quite surprising

I just finished Xenosaga 1 (Beautifully upscaled on my pc) I beat it way back when it was new and enjoyed it a lot. Gonna keep going and try to finish the whole saga.

I'm playing Bravely Default II on switch. It's my first time playing anything in the series.

Overall I think it's fun and I really like it. As complicated as the job system and the combat in general can be, because there's a lot to manage and understand, the game does a great job of teaching you. I was a little worried when I tried the demo because they just give you so much all at once.

The combat strikes that perfect balance - everything is fun and simple enough to understand but there are tons of ways to strategize and you have to think about every encounter. The game is probably grindy, but when every encounter is fun it just doesn't feel that way.

Makes me think about going back and playing the original when I'm done with this one!

9 : Anonymous2021/03/12 12:59 ID: gqoogbi

Playing Toukiden 2 recently, I'm not sure that this is jrpg but I have a blast with this game. Usually I don't enjoy hunting games but the japanese setting, music and story are pretty good.

10 : Anonymous2021/03/12 13:04 ID: gqooxqh

I just started Final Fantasy Type-0 yesterday. So far, I'm a little annoyed at the tutorial's frequency of popping up combined with how some things aren't explained well at all. I've beaten the first boss and I'm still trying to figure out the controls and combat system. My allies seem to stand still a lot.

On the other hand, the combat is fun and the game looks good, especially style wise. I feel a little thrown in and struggling to fully grasp the politics going on. I do, however, feel like I'll get there and the learning curve is just a bit steep.

11 : Anonymous2021/03/12 15:42 ID: gqp78x4

Finished Tales of Berseria. Just earlier this morning even.

I loved it. It definitely beat Symphonia as my favorite Tales game, but at the same time, I think having played Zestiria helped me appreciate it more than if I had played it as a standalone.

Liked the party members a lot, thought the antagonists worked well, and the gameplay was fun even if a bit button mashy (with Velvet more than with others)

The whole part from when Velvet goes back to Aball up to the confrontation with Artorius and Innominat in Titania was definitely my favorite. It was very emotional and I felt it.

Another thing I have to comment is that damn, armatized Artorius was just straight up HD Mithos huh? Looked really cool, but it was VERY similar

For my minor complaints about the game: I feel like most dungeons were a bit too long and had too many enemies, to the point where I felt like I had to always have a Holy Bottle with me so I could choose when I was going to fight. And I think they put up too many sidequests only towards the ending, and right before the final dungeon in special. I wish they were more spaced through the whole game. I also felt like the equipment system was a bit grindy if you wanted to master every item with everyone, but after the mess that was Zestiria's I actually think it was an improvement.

Anyway... great game. And after playing them back to back, I think it felt more like a "Tales" game than Zestiria for some reason.

I played a bit of Fire Emblem: The Blazing Sword. I got through Lyn's story and started Eliwood's. I'm at chapter 13 I think.

It's my first Fire Emblem game (not counting Heroes), and I picked it up because it's supposed to be beginner friendly. I can definitely see that. The whole Lyn portion felt a bit like a huge tutorial.

I'm not the greatest tactical JRPG fan, but I'm liking the gameplay. It's simple, but fun. The story, on the other hand, has been just alright so far. It's a bit standard medieval fantasy with the disputes between nobles, and the dialogue has been a bit on the dry side. The disappearance of Eliwood's father has potential to be more interesting tho.

Dragon Quest 11s

Im at the viking cave rescuing the gold statues. At first I did not like how basically nothing happens until you meet Rab and Jade. Then the story gets more interesting. I was honestly so bored throughout act 1 until meeting those 2 even tho Sylvando basically carries the story and makes it entertaining. I love the visuals and how colorful the world is.

Act 2 is very entertaining even tho im not into the idea of basically repeating Act 1 from a gameplay mechanic standpoint. Right now im near the end so im just binging and putting more focus into the game compared to the other two games below.

Yakuza 7 I just got access to the many job classes you can apply to your characters and met Eri. This game is great and I love everything so far.

Final Fantasy 6 GBA

Im honestly surprised at how good the game is. I been very entertained at the gameplay and story so far. Im at that peace conference and now Locke and Terra have to go to some place alone.

Playing Chrono Cross on PS1. Very... Confused. But having a blast. It's scratching my Legend of Dragoon itch.

ID: gqr57cw

I’m playing through it for the first time as well! I’ve always wanted to and finally got to starting last month.

14 : Anonymous2021/03/12 18:13 ID: gqprjve

After finishing Xenoblade 2 last month, I decided to postpone Torna (XB games have so, so much good content, but they are also exhausting imo. It took me 100 hours for a first play through and I didn’t even finish everything I wanted to do. And I still like I haven’t made much of a dent in everything there is to do haha ) and play Atelier Ryza 2 instead. And it is soooo much fun. It has pretty much addressed most, if not all of the complaints I had about the first game (battle system, item usage limitations, limited exploration until the last parts of the game, lack of character interaction). I especially appreciate the fact that they have added more non-story voices cutscenes, and the new areas have interesting aesthetics, and have landmarks with lore attached to them. I just got my second to last party member, and am looking forward to the next areas!

15 : Anonymous2021/03/13 00:36 ID: gqr1xpk

Just started chapter 1 of Bravely Default 2. I'm liking it so far but it's definitely not as exciting to me as the first Bravely Default and Bravely Second. Only big complaint is that it's very unpolished performance wise.

16 : Anonymous2021/03/12 12:23 ID: gqolcpl

Marathoning through Tales games on PC starting with Symphonia, maybe shoulda went the other way around to save my sanity from puzzle dungeons LOL

17 : Anonymous2021/03/12 11:22 ID: gqogysc

My copy of P5S finally arrived. I played already until the second Jail and it has been really fun. I am surprised even on normal difficult I was getting my ass handled sometimes lol. But i am learning to play it better.

ID: gqos2vv

I've almost done PS5 and it's been a blast. Although I've been finding normal to be easier than I was expecting. That said I've still had to redo a couple of boss battles because I was under prepared (wrong party and/or not enough SP recovery items). It's the stealth requests that have been causing me problems!

ID: gqpz3he

Ok same I’m still in the first jail but I got wrecked by the boss that has brainwash like 5 times last night. Almost to the boss of the jail and I’m worried about my party members and their SP

18 : Anonymous2021/03/12 13:38 ID: gqos9ez

Almost finished FFVII Remake. I’m a bit sad it’s almost over, but I’m excited for the next part. I hope some of combat issues (lack i-frames) are addressed in intergrade. And that none of the remaining summons in subsequent parts are obtained from Chadley’s missions (though I hope they still appear as bosses, maybe have them be unlocked as vr bosses after you get their materia). I am a bit worried about how weapons and materia are gonna carry over, though (if at all)

19 : Anonymous2021/03/12 13:58 ID: gqouh3k

I'm 45 hours into Bravely Default 2 (in chapter 4). Very good game still. The story is pretty terrible which is a shame because the localization and voice acting is terrific.

I'm here for the combat and the music and they have not disappointed. The game was very tough in the beginning, then got easier in chapters 2 and 3, but I had just had a brutal fight against the phantom asterisk in chapter 4 where I had to re-setup my party multiple times in order to get through it. Wouldn't mind a few more of those in the back half.

20 : Anonymous2021/03/12 15:25 ID: gqp51zd

I'm finishing up 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim. I was skeptical going into this game as I don't like visual novels, but the story is amazing, maybe one of the top stories I've experienced in a video game. I'm really glad I took a chance on this game and I highly recommend it to anyone that likes Sci Fi.

21 : Anonymous2021/03/12 16:06 ID: gqpae8h

I've taken a break from replaying the FFs and Pokémon games to play some Shadow Hearts.

Yuri's first 30 minutes REALLY turned me off, he's more vile in the beginning than I remembered as an eighteen year old (last time I played).

Luckily, that has gotten turned down pretty dramatically just a few hours in, and hopefully stays that way, since I really liked the second game in the mid 2000s.

I also have FE Radiant Dawn coming in the mail today, so will probably get back to PoR and that again soon. I sold my copy several years ago when my PS3 was killed in a power surge, and have regretted it since.

22 : Anonymous2021/03/12 17:30 ID: gqplt80

Still on The World Ends With You (JP, DS) and I really think it's starting to click with me! At first I was utterly confused with both the story and the battle system. But with more badges, and the ability to chain together multiple random encounters for multi-round fights, I am really enjoying it now! Glad I stuck with it.

23 : Anonymous2021/03/12 17:49 ID: gqpobs4

I finished Persona 5 Strikers this past weekend, and other than a few gameplay issues that I did not like (nothing with the muso combat) I am sad because this might be the last time I see the P5 crew in a game unless another spinoff comes out.

After P5S I started back up The Legend Of Heroes: Trails In The Sky, and I said to myself when starting this game back up from it I said keep expectations low because this game is slow. That is working well for me because I am enjoying this I feel like after playing Cold Steel I appreciate this much more than I did when I first tried it because I set expectations at a certain point. I am only on the prologue still (hoping to beat the prologue this weekend), and I imagine this might take me the rest of the month to beat through next week is my spring break so I should get a lot of progress made in this.

24 : Anonymous2021/03/12 18:47 ID: gqpw2t9

Playing LOH : prophecy of moonlight witch in my vita(with a mod for native resolution) and it looks gorgeous. This is my 2nd playthrough as I started after finishing tears of vermilion

Though combat is boring, the story is really nice as a slow burn which suits me as I am preparing for exams and can only pay for some time.

I am looking forward to finishing this and then start loh tits proper

25 : Anonymous2021/03/12 19:03 ID: gqpyang

I have started playing Tokyo Xanadu. But I don't know if I'll ever finish it. The plot does not convince me.

ID: gqqd0gx

I found that the plot became much more interesting as the game went along.

26 : Anonymous2021/03/12 19:05 ID: gqpyj0x

I started Valkyria Chronicles this week and am about 4 hours in now (Chapter 4). I'm finding the gameplay interesting as it reminds me of a game called Code Name S.T.E.A.M. that I played a few years ago so I guess that was based off this game. I think it's cool how they use a book format for progressing through the story. Other than that, not much else to say at this time.

27 : Anonymous2021/03/12 20:21 ID: gqq88of

Finished cold steel 3 last week and am currently playing trough zero no kiseki.

28 : Anonymous2021/03/12 22:22 ID: gqqn976

I'm currently playing Arc the Lad 2. I'm really enjoying it so far. I have over 6 hours of gameplay at the moment. The story and characters have been pretty good. If there's one complaint I have. It's that the combat can a bit tedious at times.

29 : Anonymous2021/03/13 04:11 ID: gqrnphu

I'm playing the second Trails in the Sky game and, well, I love it. For me, the hype about the series has proven well-grounded. I actually didn't think a lot of the first one. It was fine. But this one... the depth of the characters' interactions and the political narratives are beyond anything I recall seeing in a game. Honestly, much of the dialog is better than your average Brandon Sanderson book.

My biggest concern about the game is that I don't know that anything else like it exists.

30 : Anonymous2021/03/13 05:33 ID: gqrur8u

Playing in between games my self today play a bit of fgo and a fan game. Played a bit of FE warriors got it last Sunday. Robably play it some more tomorrow and FE7R

Did you try The World Ends with you?

ID: gqos1ps

Tactics A2 is actually pretty fast for Tactics game, due to it's smaller maps and lower number of party. Dispatch quests is a good way to train up generic units without going into battle. Story is definitely one of it's weakest point.

Also have you tried The 4 Heroes of Light? It's basically spiritual ancestor of Bravely Default. It's quite simplistic and fun imo.

32 : Anonymous2021/03/12 12:37 ID: gqomimk

I just finished the first half of act 1 of Trails of Cold Steel 4 and I'm really enjoying myself.

The thing I really like so far is Rean's absence from the party at the moment and how the rest of the cast is reacting without him around, looking forward to them really stepping up in his stead.

The New Class 7 kids are really continuing to come into their own as well, especially Altina. she was already opening up and expressing herself more in CS3, but even in this short period of time in CS4 she's really shining for me. Her reaction after waking up with the others at the start of the game was something else I'll tell ya.

Really looking forward to seeing how this all wraps up.

33 : Anonymous2021/03/12 12:41 ID: gqomsnm

Juuuuust finished Yakuza 4. The story is a hot mess and I love it. I love that the series started to experiment with multiple protagonists, and that it started adding new areas to kamurocho to keep it fresh.

I just started Atelier Ryza 2. It looks like they tweaked the battle system from the last game. I only played the first hour or so though, I'm looking forward to more.
