Final Fantasy IV was my favorite RPG as a kid, and I've always wanted to play the DS remake. Is the Steam version a decent way to play it? I heard the framerate in battles is low, but how distracting is it? I completed Final Fantasy III on Steam several years ago and never had an issue (assuming it had the same framerate). Thanks!

ID: h07kvjl

I haven’t played it on Steam but the original DS version does have a low frame rate in battles. It was pushing the limits of the DS’s 3D so it does get choppy. You kind of get used to it. Outside of battle is fine.

I do think it’s worth playing because it feels so different from the SNES FF4

ID: h07nukq

I legit consider the DS remake of FF4 better then the 2D versions. It's got much more of a challenge to it, the gameplay feels much more customizable with the augments, character abilities are MUCH better and actually useful in some cases compared to the 2D version and the writing is much better overall.

ID: h0c7zdk

I liked the 3d remake a lot. There is a mod to kind of fix the framerate in battle. I don't have the link at the moment but if you go into the guides on Steam it shouldn't be too hard to find.

This 'mod' is really just a multiplier to the battle speed since that is tied to the framerate. It does makes the game a bit harder since battles are faster paced, though.

So yeah, I’m almost done with all of the endings in Nier Replicant (took forever btw) and I’m ready to return to my favorite series, Final Fantasy! I recently splurged and got sone PSX titles to play, but now I don’t know where to start. Basically, should I play I, VI, or VIII? I’ve heard VI is the best, part of me wants to see the series roots, and part of me is just intrigued by VIII. And another part of me wants to revisit my favorite entry, IX. Any suggestions?

ID: h0b9r41

If 9 is your favorite, then you'll probably love 6 - there's a pretty good overlap there, in terms of fan bases.

FF8 is pretty unique, and it's hard to know ahead of time whether someone will love it or hate it, haha. If you do play it, just make sure you go through the in-game tutorials and guides, so that you really understand the junction and magic systems.

FF1 is a very by-the-book JRPG. It's fine and fun, but pretty simple, which is why you read a lot about people playing it on their phones - the turn-based nature makes it easy to pause, if you get interrupted. Your first time through, I'd recommend the party suggested by the manual and guide book - Fighter, Black Belt, White Mage and Black Mage.

I'm kinda getting the urge to play Final Fantasy XI. I'm a massive fan of the series and have played and completed all of the main series games... except for XI. Online gaming wasn't an option for me when XI was new, and by the time I actually wanted to join a FF MMO, ARR was already there and was an easy choice.

I know XI is much maligned these days for being extremely grind-heavy and just not as good as ARR, but I also feel bad about not experiencing this bit of history while it's still miraculously online, even if it's a lot more bare and bland than it was in its heyday. So... is FFXI still worth playing for the story these days? Am I going to suffer endless queues for story dungeons or something like that?

ID: h0lh7zw

XI is still great to play. And you don't have to worry about story dungeons because those don't exist. XI is a lot more open and has very few instanced areas. All of the story can be soloed except for the newest, hardest stuff.

XI also does almost nothing to help you figure out what to do so it's a little hard to get into. What I would reccomend is heading over to bg-wiki and looking up the guides there for the 1-119 starter guide

That will explain everything you need to know and walk you through the steps you have to take to get into the game.

Also note that if you need help with older stuff (like old quests) there is a second wiki at ffxiclopedia. It usually has more information about the old quests so always check both wikis if you get stuck on something.

Is Crystal Chronicles on the switch worth it? Looking to get a FF game on the switch for when I go travelling later in the year. I heard a lot of people didn’t like it because the multiplayer wasn’t what it was supposed to be, but I never played it so I’m just wondering is it worth it as like a single player game

ID: h0k7m4x

I remember the game being more fun back when I played it with our gameboys connected to the GameCube with my siblings. I went back to play the game later on by myself due to nostalgia, and I don’t remember it being as fun as I remembered.

ID: h0lfgx3

I haven't played the remake. But I did play the original. Playing alone was alright. It was fun enough but not spectacular or anything.

Multiplayer is where the game shines. It's a lot of fun because someone has to hold the chalice which leads to people arguing who has to pick it up, or just picking it up and running away with it. It's a ton of fun with more people.

So if the multiplayer doesn't work in the remake then I can understand why people would be upset. That was the most fun part.

6 : Anonymous2021/06/01 04:11 ID: h05oz3h

Kefka is the greatest villain in the whole FF series.

FF6 the best...

Am I wrong?

ID: h0c8rib

I think X is the best game.

But the best villain is a bit more complicated. I would say it's probably Lilith from XI but I'm not completely tied to that answer.

So I missed the bladded staff because I didn't have steal materia. I was annoyed but thought it wasn't going to be an issue, then I saw mission 17, master all 16 weapons. This is needed to unlock bahaumut so I was annoyed. Until I looked and noticed that I had more than 16 weapons, after searching online, I learned that there are 24 weapons. So does this mean I can still complete mission 17 and get bahaumut, or does it only apply to specific weapons? I know I can't get it now (Chp 14) but later when I get areith and see chadley can this work?

8 : Anonymous2021/06/01 12:00 ID: h06mvyu

Is there an upcoming event/announcement? I seem to remember hearing recent rumours of a new game - don't remember the details.

ID: h07l9t7

There’s a rumor that they’re going to reveal a game at E3 called Final Fantasy Origin. The speculation is that it’s going to be based on FFI’s story and will play like Dark Souls and that it’s being made by the team that did Nioh.

No idea if any of it is true

ID: h06xt4c

Likely some news about XVI in E3, and there's been rumors about a new game as well that would probably be announced there too.

Do the HD remasters come with any kind of booklet or insert?

I'm looking to pick up used physical copies of X/X-2 and Type-0 for PS4, but it's unclear to me what's considered "complete". Seems most of the copies up for sale only contain a case and disc with no sign of anything missing.

ID: h0eh6fn

none of those you mentioned have booklets.

If you pre-ordered Type-0 it would have an insert for a FFXV demo promo code, but thats not likely to be valid if its a used copy.

10 : Anonymous2021/06/01 16:36 ID: h07kco6

As someone who started on FF7 when it came out and have enjoyed 8,9,10,12,13, and the 7 remake. I’ve tried over the years to go back and play 1, 4,5, and 6, but couldn’t get into it.

I’m curious about the remake of 3. I never had a DS so i was never able to try it out. Is it worth it?

ID: h07mknr

If you're not into 1 or 5, I'd say probably not. It has some QoL improvements from the original - better balancing of the classes - but it's still fundamentally a grindy, turn-based RPG.

It seems like your sweet spot is the PS1 and PS2 era of the FF series. Some other game series to explore, if you haven't already, would be Suikoden (100+ recruitable characters), Dragon Quest (more swords and shields, turn-based RPG), or Persona (a modern day, set in HS RPG).

11 : Anonymous2021/06/01 16:59 ID: h07nn44

So I've heard of this on other sites, but I wanted to confirm here: Is the best version of FF5 really the GBA version with a SNES Music Patch/Graphic fix patch?

If so, which specific patches by name?

ID: h0e16n1

The best version of FF5 is indeed the GBA version, but you don't need any patches. The graphics are generally an improvement over the SNES version while not being so different as to be completely foreign, and the music is purely a matter of personal taste (I think the GBA music sounds better, honestly). The only thing I'd patch is the character portraits, because they're kind of ugly and don't match the sprites at all. You can get a patch that replaces the portraits with blank space here, if you wish, but again, no patches are truly necessary.

Where does the song ‘Quiet Resolve’ play in FF12: Zodiac Age? The wiki says that it only plays in scenes talking to Old Dalan near the beginning of the game, but I’m sure I heard it as an area theme somewhere.

13 : Anonymous2021/06/01 18:42 ID: h081qmm

Has the FINAL FANTASY XIV: ENDWALKER Collector's Edition for PS5 pre-order started yet? I saw that it was available for PC/Mac pre-order, but couldn't locate PS4/PS5 alternatives. I'd like to catch the opportunity before all the scalpers snatch them all up 🙁

ID: h0ee4tg

there is no physical PS Collector's Edition.

PS4/PS5 release will be digital only, and you can get that from the PS Store. If you want the Collector's Edition goods, then you'd need to get the CE Box

14 : Anonymous2021/06/02 00:13 ID: h097mcq

Should I play FF13? I've played all the rest, but 13 didn't pull me in (secondary characters seemed unimpressive as well) and the linear nature turned me offz so I stopped after an hour or two when trying it at a friend's house.

Worth giving the series another shot, ie the sequels are better?

ID: h09km05

Personally I love the XIII trilogy, but it's not going to be for everyone. That being said, it sounds like you didn't really give it much of a shot before, so I'd say it's definitely worth another chance. It's worth noting that if you do become invested in the story and characters, the sequels aren't linear at all (in fact, LR is probably the least linear game in the franchise, as you can quite literally go just about anywhere right off the bat).

The best FF for iOS with controller compatibility?

What version of ff7 should I play between the switch and steam version? This is for a first time play through so I’m not interested in using any mods, and I’ve heard the switch version has some bug fixes and additions not in the steam version

ID: h0dzti3

The PS1 original is the ideal way to play FF7 (and 8 and 9), but between Switch and Steam, I believe they're about the same. I'm not aware of any significant differences between those two.

17 : Anonymous2021/06/03 00:01 ID: h0dn45r

As a returning player (played 13) do I need to play 14 before starting 15? Wondering in regards to the main story? I see 14 is an mmorpg and might differ from the main story. Any help is appreciated!

ID: h0dx5c5

The games aren't connected to one another, unless they're direct sequels. (i.e. 13 has 13-2 and 13-3, X has X-2, and there is some DLC for 15.) The "connecting" elements of the games are more lore-related things, like riding Chocobos, summons like Shiva and Bahamut and Ifrit, a character named Cid, etc. You can play 15 without playing 13 just fine.

18 : Anonymous2021/06/03 02:44 ID: h0e6psb

In X-2, is it possible to set a dressphere to not learn any abilities? I don't want my Dark Knights to learn Charon (Self-Destruct, basically) when it's the only ability they have left to learn. Is there any way to just say "don't learn anything", letting me continue to use a dressphere without being forced to obtain unwanted abilities?

ID: h0edqnh

i think you can just set it to an ability that was already learned? if not then theres no other option to not learn anything.

Are any of the card games required in FFVIII or FFIX? I own the games, but really afraid of being stuck because those card games don't appeal to me. Do I have to master these card games? Are they required at some point and do I have to win?

ID: h0eua42

Other than being fun and a handy thing to refine certain cards into good items, no requirement to play cards in FFVIII

In FFIX, there is a certain plot point that requires you to play cards, but it's literally only a few rounds and you would have gotten cards just by fighting monsters, no obligation to 'grind' for cards to progress the story

ID: h0hj8zo

You're not required to master in any way. FFIX does have a mandatory tournament, but you don't have to win. IX's game is pretty fast anyway.

VIII's game is key to doing a lot of side content in the game though, if you want to get the most out of your experience.

20 : Anonymous2021/06/03 21:02 ID: h0hjh62

Is there any word on if the PS4 DLC for FF7R (Digital Deluxe goodies, butterfinger gear, etc) will be accessible if you move your game to PS5?

I don't have a PS5 to try it out, but I was curious.

21 : Anonymous2021/06/04 04:30 ID: h0j2vq5

So I’m playing FF4 on steam, I’ve made it to the lunar subterranean and I get to a chest on the 5th floor containing crystal gloves and a red dragon fight. Now the red dragon’s thermal rays are bad enough, so I decide to whittle down its hp with Cecil, Kain, and Rydia using bahamut. The problem is that whenever Cecil or Kain attacks their accuracy is a measly 60 and 65 percent respectively. And I just gotta ask: are the accuracy rolls supposed to be this bad in FF4? I opted for Kain to use axes instead of spears because they tanked his accuracy, while Cecil is equipped with Excalibur. The only times in the ff games I’ve played where accuracy was this bad was the beginning hours of 2 and 3, but it was strictly to the beginning of the game as opposed to the final area.

ID: h0lfse6

Yes it is supposed to be like that. FFIV, especially the 3d version that's on Steam, is pretty difficult.

Nothing some grinding won't fix, though.

ID: h0kp09a

Are you playing the 3D version? In that one, difficulty is upped in all sorts of ways, which is why I generally don't like it as much, as someone who's played through the original a dozen times or so. At least in the 2D version, Cecil and Kain rarely miss, even with axes.

If you're playing the 3D version, the strategy from the Wiki) seems valid - Try casting Berserk, which will prevent the Red Dragon from using thermal rays. I'm sure he'll still hit like a bastard, but at least you're not in big danger of a whole party wipe. You can also cast Berserk on Cecil, so he'll get a speed and attack boost. Have Edge use items and act a second healer, too, since he'll probably do modest damage, unless he's throwing stuff.

I have nearly finished ff7 remake on my ps5 but I got it through ps plus and I want to play the dlc but you don’t get the upgrade to intgrade for free on the ps plus version. So is there away that I can buy it separately, I have seen the £15 upgrade to the deluxe version but it doesn’t say anything about the dlc. Any help would be helpful thx

23 : Anonymous2021/06/04 19:52 ID: h0ltu2k

I was right past the point where Cecil’s class changes in FFIV (SNES retranslation) and I found out my saves weren’t working the whole time. How close was I to the end and will everything afterwards be worth the grind?

ID: h0rf2q8

You were not anywhere near the end. You were maybe...a third of the way through?

24 : Anonymous2021/06/04 22:18 ID: h0md04q

Which ff game on pc is the best for a newcomer? I've always dreamt of playing ff but I couldn't afford any gaming consoles until now when I'm getting my first gaming pc next week! For me the characters and visuals are the most important thing. I like grinding for levels but I'm easily overwhelmed if the gaming mechanics are too advanced. Which ff game should I start with?

26 : Anonymous2021/06/04 22:53 ID: h0mhbi6

Kind of a random question, probably not worthy of it's own thread.

Does anyone know of any sites or communities or anything that are focused on helping people find older Final Fantasy merchandise?

I started building up a Freya Crescent collection last year and I now, to my knowledge, have every single piece of official Freya merch that exists - except for one.

There is a collection of pin badges that were released in Japan to promote the mobile game Final Fantasy Record Keeper. They were distributed in gacha machines, and each pin had a standard version and a rarer shiny version.

Freya is one of the characters who got pins. I have the standard pin but have been keeping an eye out for the shiny pin for months and have never seen it pop up. Seen plenty for other characters but not hers.

Any help with that would be appreciated, would really love to complete my collection. I shared it before last year on this sub but would love to have a complete one that I could share.

27 : Anonymous2021/06/05 02:24 ID: h0n4xvb

Hey!

I have a month off and I've been wanting to play a new Final Fantasy game for some time now. I am hesitating between FFX Remaster and FFXII The Zodiac Age. I think I'm gonna play it for 2 to 3 hours a day on average, so I'd like to beat the game in less than 60 hours (I don't care about all the side content, although I'd like to do some interesting side quests). Which one should I play? FFX seems shorter and its battle system looks really slow (in comparison to speed-boosted battle in FF7 and FF8), but I don't think I'll be able to get a decent FF12 experience since the game is said to be really rich and long.

Thanks!

28 : Anonymous2021/06/05 07:25 ID: h0nveuz

Both games are really good and I recommend playing both of them eventually. They are quite different to each other, so you might wanna pick the game based on your preferences.

FFX has the classic turn-based battle system and is a pretty linear game. Areas and dungeons are mostly very straightforward with little to explore. The game still offers you a quite long main story and a lot of optional stuff to do. X is also very newcomer-friendly as the combat system isn’t hard to understand and no boss fights are frustratingly difficult (though some of them can be a bit challenging).

XII on the other hand uses an active battle system. Fights no longer take place on a separate screen, but directly in the overworld. Characters and enemies still only attack when it’s their turn (when their ATB gauge fills) but everyone can act simultaneously, making combat much more dynamic. An essential system of combat is also the gambit system which basically makes you “program” your party members so that they act automatically depending on the situation (e.g. “When HP of ally is less than 50%, use Heal”). The game is not too difficult overall, but it might be more challenging to new players in the series since the combat system basically got reinvented and it’s something that players haven’t seen in the pre-XII games.

Another big difference between the two is, as you said, that XII has a huge world that should be explored. The game is very open-world-like, with big areas. Exploring isn’t necessary for the main story, but the world building is very detailed so I’d say you’d miss out if you didn’t explore at least just a bit. That said, the game can definitely be beaten in less than 60 hours even if you explore most areas (not taking into account the optional areas, then you’d probably be exceeding these 60 hours).

So, for starters I’d say X is probably the better choice, but XII is such a great game so you should definitely check that one out too.

In ff7 can I get Kujata before the Lunar Harp / Temple of the Ancients? Like, can he show up on the non-awakened first screen?

edit: Yes you absolutely can

31 : Anonymous2021/06/05 18:07 ID: h0pkvof

I'd love to answer that, but your link is taking me to an error page - can you try posting that again?

32 : Anonymous2021/06/06 11:57 ID: h0sbjms

Have you tried Trial Mode, perhaps? You can steal the sword from one of the enemies in that mode and that's the only way to get more than 1

33 : Anonymous2021/06/06 10:50 ID: h0s6st9

When I got the ps5 in November, I started FF7 up. Noticed there was no difference. Figured if I waited a month or so, there would possibly be a soft patch that unlocked 60 FPS. Forgot about the game. Fast forward february when the upgrade was announced. Beyond excited to play this game for the first time. Hardcore kingdom hearts fan and have never played any FF games. This will be my first one. So excited!!!

34 : Anonymous2021/06/06 13:08 ID: h0shp7p

In X-2, Maechen disappeared in chapter 5 before I had a chance to talk to him. I went to Zanarkand, got Episode Complete, and he was standing there after the cutscene. I decided to save and quit to take a break, and when I loaded the game back up, he was gone! I reloaded the game and exited and reentered the screen multiple times, but I can't get him to reappear. Is this a glitch? I have never seen this mentioned or warned about anywhere. (Original PS2 version, btw.)
