- Miss Branford by Amano! This is pure art!

Yoshitaka Amano has been one of my favorite artists for years. Dude is absolutely incredible and I absolutely love his artwork for the Vampire Hunter D novels.

Oh yeah, you've never seen it before? They're pretty amazing.

I've always loved Amano's work, but the more I learn about the development of FF1-6, the more I feel that his role in "designing" FF's characters is totally overblown in comparison to Kazuko Shibuya, whose role is vastly underappreciated.
Most people think that Amano designed all the characters first, and then an anonymous team of pixel artists were tasked with copying his drawings onto the screen. This was true for the static enemy sprites, but not for the playable characters.
More often Kazuko Shibuya designed all of the playable characters on-screen first, and then Amano did his own interpretations independently or after the fact. There were cases where the two of them exchanged ideas and iterated characters together, but generally Shibuya had both the first and final word on how they appeared.
Lots of the FF series' most famous visuals, like black mages, white mages, chocobos, and pretty much all the original job classes were all devised entirely by Kazuko Shibuya with little or no involvement from Amano.
All those cases where characters have different hair colors in-game are not because the sprite artists decided to ignore the original design; generally it was the opposite. Amano tends to ignore hair color in his artwork and give everyone bleached hair regardless of any source material he's given.
ID: h5k2fd9Thank you very much for the info, it was exactly like I thought. I always found it strange that Amano supposedly designer these characters first, despite that he didn't seem like a person who was ever into gaming, and these characters somehow fitted into these games.
I was never blown away by his style (still I think that he is good artists but in art world there is too many good artists to think that Amano is one of best ever in history) and I think that there are better character designers. His style despite that is unique, hardly fitts video games and is very monothematic. The best character designers are artists who came from comic, animation or even advertising background because of how similar are these fields regarding to video game aesthetics.

Woah this is gorgeous!

Unpopular opinion: while I respect the artwork and can recognize that is a suggestive picture, I don't like AT ALL this art style.
ID: h5j67n1while I respect the artwork and can recognize that is a suggestive picture,
suggestive how?
ID: h5jgcenAmano is ok as an artist but rather poor character designer when it comes to human characters
ID: h5jir0vThat's the thing about art. Everyone interprets and appreciates it in their own way.
ID: h5iwanjI don’t like his people. I really dig Amano’s monsters and the game logos but I find the human(oid) game characters to just look wrong.

Amano + Uematsu = GAME MASTERPIECE. Seriously, check out my pinned post of FF 6; Uematsu is like Johann Sebastian Bach of video game music, and Amano is Da Vinci!
ID: h5jg2o3I get that you like them but man this is new level of being their fanboy.

Indeed! In what other games did Amano take part?
