Horizon Zero Dawn PC Revisited: It's So Much Better - But Is It Fully Fixed?
2 : Anonymous2021/03/06 14:33 ID: gpyh32k

TL;DW from Eurogamer's article

Horizon Zero Dawn is much improved and it's no longer a 'poor' PC conversion, but neither is it particularly outstanding: there are still some issues such as the wonky cutscene camera change animation stalling, the rather odd animation playback jolt and the fact that I still think the game is generally under-performing on PC compared to the consoles. Even at matched console settings with low quality anisotropic filtering and middling image quality at 1080p, we should expect GPUs like RX 580 and GTX 1060 to power way beyond the results of PlayStation 4. Taking the RX 580 as an example, to see an AMD GPU with over 3x the compute performance of PlayStation 4 deliver less than 60fps is disappointing - and doesn't tally with the performance upgrade seen on other well-rounded console ports.

ID: gq07lwj

Initially I avoided buying the game because I thought that my GTX 1060 couldn't handle it, this article just reminded me how much powerful my modest pc is compared to a ps4.

I'm an idiot.

ID: gpyu6fb

I'm one of those people who care more about a smooth framerate than a high framerate. I can totally do 30FPS as long as it isn't jittering all over the place.

ID: gq10bkx

i love the game but the blur is crazy, didnt find any setting for it - turning off depth of field didnt seem to do anything

ID: gpynq1g

I get 70ish fps in 4k, absolute max settings with a 3090 and the game is absolutely gorgeous. One of the best looking games ever made IMO.

Console HW is generally more powerful vis a vis PC hardware b/c the consoles (or at least PS) gives you pretty bare metal access to the hardware; by comparison, even vulkan and DX12 rely on abstractions to a certain extent, and that’s to say nothing of how much overhead windows + drivers have over a stripped down console (and probably *nix/bsd-based) OS.

This doesn’t really matter for all or even most games, but horizon was heavily optimized for the PS4’s GPU iirc. So it should come as small surprise that “equivalent” hardware performs worse, when that same hardware has more overhead and less optimization potential than coding for 1-2 CPU+GPU variants for the PS4/pro.

The upside w/ a PC port of a heavily optimized console title is that you can get better performance and visuals (maybe) with much better hardware.

And before you complain, the reason that a lot of AAA 1st party game devs -like- making games for fixed console hardware, is that it’s easier to create and ensure that you have a solid, uniform experience for your entire player base. With PC hardware you don’t really have that guarantee due to disparate hardware configurations, and testing + QA on a wide range of hardware is more difficult and resource intensive than when targeting a single platform.

see eg cyberpunk, or watchdogs, AC unity, halo infinite, etc etc

(note: obviously CD red seems to have had many other issues, but designing an overly ambitious bleeding edge AAA game that -also- has to run on a wide range of hardware certainly did not make their jobs easier. In fact, it probably made their jobs 10x harder, and you could probably pin the (apparent) internal collapse of the studio prior to launch at least partly on that. /2c)

ID: gpzty5r

I think it's crazy he calls this an "an ok port" with the state of native PC games recently.... Cyberpunk.... The Medium..... Not that I support releasing half baked games but this game is nearly flawless in it's current state. I played about 40 hours on 1.9 and another 40 on 1.10 with no bugs that I can think of, everything else is nitpicking performance and honestly yeah maybe it could be better optimized but again it is still well within enjoyable margins.

ID: gq0avna

PC gamers have way too much expectation of their poor hardware , you have an ancient 5 year old graphics card like an rx580 that was midrange even when it came out and you expect to run the latest games at a perfect 60fps with maxed out graphics.

3 : Anonymous2021/03/06 16:25 ID: gpz6fxm

I just played througj the game and the expansion with the latest patch. Runs like a dream, looks amazing (minus the facial animations) and I really hope the sequel gets a PC version too.

My biggest gripe is the the way the camera will not center behind alloy if she's running diagonally. I don't know if this is a glitch or a design choice but it's weird and jarring, especially in ultra wide where Alloy will almost be completely too the side of your screen.

Oh last thing, fuck those machines that burrow underground. Clearing the corrupted zone of those took me nearly 3 hours.

ID: gpzeulg

The camera offset is a design decision. Hell, technically even Aloy not running straight towards towards where you aim was a design decision. The running straight towards where you’re aiming was eventually changed on PC, but the PS4 version still has the original implementation where she occasionally runs off-center based on how offset the camera itself is.

Anyway, it’s all design choices. The offset camera of the game especially is partly why I loved it — it made exploring and running through the world so much more enjoyable and — dare I say it — cinematic due to how Aloy was slowly offset on the screen allowing you to focus on the surroundings and environment instead.

Even if you increase the Field of View Slider on the PC Version, Horizon Zero Dawn's Camera System is Dynamic, and the Camera (aside of Aiming) will adjust based on the location, stealth or combat.

You wouldn't notice the problem if you were playing with a Gamepad thanks to the Joysticks, but it becomes a problem when Digital Key (for Movement) is involved.

Thankfully, that has been resolved and it should be more consistent with many games with Third-Person Camera perspective.

What is your PC specs? I played and finished main game and dlc on PC with i5 6600k and GTX 1080. I couldn't get a steady frame rate at 60 on the lowest settings. 30 made me nauseous.

ID: gpzz1qb

I didn't have a problem with this when it worked well, but there's a sort of camera drift. Sometimes the offset would just provide me with a wide view of a boulder and nothing beyond. Makes cover hard to use. If the player just taps the aim button, there's a reset, but I would think 3D gaming has evolved past Super Mario 64 camera controls.

The offset wasn't even there in some village areas where I wanted it. The camera would be tight and directly behind Aloy.

ID: gq37vyt

I just aggroed them and then ran across the river. they can't burrow across water

ID: gq1aw55

The camera is what made me stop playing it on PS4. Its a shame you cant seem to turn it off on PC.

4 : Anonymous2021/03/06 15:24 ID: gpyrmwq

I play it on Christmas. Only got 1 crash and 2 small graphic bugs in ~70 hours of gameplay.

The world is incredibly beautiful and I'm seriusly thinking about buying a PS5 when Horizon Forbidden West releases (if I'm able to find one).

Exactly what Sony was aiming for

ID: gpz4am7

i played it in november and didn't have any problems other than the movement stop after looting.

"Indiana jones and the quest for the PlayStation" coming soon.

Rated PG13

ID: gpzjipr

I'll buy it for ps5 if it has mouse and keyboard support. After trying both there's no way I'm playing this game with a controller.

ID: gq120fz

Forbidden West could eventually make its way to PC after a year or two of exclusivity.

ID: gpzje9e

I was still almost unplayable on my old PC. The crashes are fixed but there were just too many fps drops during fights. Then I got a new PC and HZD was the first game I played. This time I had no issues at all.

Great Ubisoft game.

But I can't imagine playing it with a controller. I'll wait for the sequel to come to PC. I hope HZD was a lesson in how to do a PC port and the next one will be great from the start.

ID: gpzb28e

Did they fix the ugly UI?

These games look terrific and clean in trailers, then you play and see the HP bar takes half the screen.

Can barely see the game, who approves this?

5 : Anonymous2021/03/06 15:53 ID: gpyymsk

except for 2 crashes among 120 hours of gameplay, I had no problems, highly recommended to pick it up, it's a masterpiece

ID: gpzqd64

I had the same experience with 3 crashes in about 100 hours. Idgaf about the crashes because the game is seriously amazing. Easily in my top 10, possibly top 5 games I've ever played. I listened to every recording, read every log, did every "errand" quest, and I still want more content. If Forbidden West isn't on PC in 2-3 years, I'm actually going to be pretty tempted to buy a ps5 just to play it. I really don't want to buy a ps5 lol.

same, i had to turn off some graphics option and the game ran super smooth i dont remember what it was called at this point though

I'm not even aware that it was broken. I played and beat it the first month it was released on Steam with no problems.

If it matters I was using an i5 8500 with 1080 ti playing on 1440p

ID: gq0kmun

R5 2600x/1080ti, 1440p as well. No problems here performance wise, runs over 60 majority of the time and I bought it day 1. Played like 10 hours iirc, I never went back to finish it and the only complaint I have is the character animations in dialog kinda bother me for some reason.

ID: gq6vkig

I had tons of crashes, but the first 2-3 patches fixed the game for me. After that it was a great experience.

7 : Anonymous2021/03/06 19:03 ID: gpzyafu

I tried playing it recently and the audio mix was completely broken. In stereo one channel was 100% dominant so any audio coming from certain direction was just not there. Was bad during gameplay, but worse during cutscenes as dialogue would just stop entirely with camera changes since it changed the direction the audio was coming from. Want to play again, but hoping the audio stuff will get fixed

8 : Anonymous2021/03/06 15:52 ID: gpyydbb

I waited a year and a bit to play it and considering I couldn't play it at all on a 580 8gb on release I'll take the 50-55fps average. The game is definitely worth playing, everything is so polished and well done, there's really nothing negative to say about the game except I wish the climbing was more accessible than differently colored rocks/ledges on a set path. Hopefully the sequel has free climbing.

ID: gpzjafm

The teaser for the sequel was definitely suggesting that climbing will be more “free”.

ID: gpzux29

It runs on the same engine as Death Stranding, so they definitely added free climbing!

9 : Anonymous2021/03/07 00:05 ID: gq1m2f9

Played 25 hours on Steam but it was getting tedious. Visually very beautiful to look at and an emotional story.

ID: gq3eax3

I played it a bit and it just feels like a reskinned tomb raider

10 : Anonymous2021/03/06 16:18 ID: gpz4kli

i played at launch, had a couple of slowdowns, two or three crashs in the same cave, but other than that it run fine even in my old machine. i honestly didnt had near enough problems to call it a poor port...

11 : Anonymous2021/03/06 16:55 ID: gpzduxc

Question for those that have played on both the pc and Ps4. I started playing on the Ps4, but kinda stopped a long time ago when I heard it was coming out for the pc. I mainly did it because I felt a mouse would feel a lot better for aiming. Is this the case? Or should I just finish it on the Ps4?

ID: gq04bv1

I mainly did it because I felt a mouse would feel a lot better for aiming

I personally don't think this is the case at all. There's some aim assist for controller (I think) and I never had issues with aiming.
I watched one of my friends play on M/K and he seemed to have a lot more issues aiming than I did, so idk.

ID: gq0demh

As someone that ditched the PS4 game because I'm shit at aiming on a controller (and this game has fairly demanding precision) I greatly prefer combat with the kb/m, but I still prefer almost everything else (exploring, etc) with a controller.

ID: gq318ds

Way more accurate with mouse imo. Tried controller for big tv went back to desk after 10 minutes

ID: gq74byp

I played it on both. I normally have big issues with aiming with a controller and I think something like Uncharted is nearly unplayable even on the easiest difficulty.

Horizon Zero Dawn played surprisingly well with a controller. I think it's because a lot of the enemies run at you in a straight line, so you have more time to aim your shot. There's also a slow-motion mechanic, which really helps.

Mouse and keyboard is still much better, though. I enjoyed the game much more on PC than on PS4.

ID: gpzokia

I never heard of this game when I had my ps4. I started playing it on my pc with a mouse and keyboard, then tried with my ps5 controller. I personally prefer using a controller, especially when u can sit back in your big cozy couch and enjoy the game on a big TV (I hooked my pc to my 65" TV, it looks amazing and way better at a capped 60 fps rather than a ps4 with 30fps.

ID: gq09wfo

I feel like the hit detection is kinda wonky. Played on highest difficulty level. Don't know about aim assist but it felt that on DS4 bow was a hitscan weapon. If you aimed a something that was moving, as long as the object was in the middle of the sight it always hit, whereas on M&K you should compensate for the movement. Also, arrows sometimes go right through the enemies on M&K.

12 : Anonymous2021/03/06 17:18 ID: gpzi7zk

Almost 100% completed it, only experienced one crash I can remember. That being said, there were terrible parts with audio stuttering when frame rates dropped when I was fighting multiple or technical monsters. The audio stuttering was so bad.

13 : Anonymous2021/03/06 22:25 ID: gq127cy

Is there any fix for shimmering foliage or AA problem, I haven't tried latest update but last time I tried there was so much noise on foliage that I just stopped playing, I used 2k resolution, tried to Google some fixes but those didn't work

ID: gq28ttf

Nope, the game’s TAA is just useless. The only solution is to supersample the game in 4K+ to help clear up the jagged edges.

Death Stranding on the same engine has exactly the same problem - but that has DLSS which cleans everything up perfectly.

14 : Anonymous2021/03/06 16:11 ID: gpz317u

Played it just a month ago with a RTX 1060. It played very smoothly and I didn’t notice any jank or bugs. Fantastic game.

15 : Anonymous2021/03/07 03:04 ID: gq267np

I cannot say enough how good this game is. Played it on PS4 3 years ago and then played it again this past year on PC at 1440p/60. God damn this game is a masterpiece. Beautiful, the combat is really fun to mix and match, best bow mechanics in any video game I’ve ever played

16 : Anonymous2021/03/06 19:32 ID: gq03gwx

Decided to boot this back up after seeing this video. Got into a fight with a watcher.

It hit me and i glitched into a rock.

17 : Anonymous2021/03/06 18:09 ID: gpzp1lr

The only consistent glitch I experience is for whatever reason it tries to set my refresh rate to 23hz. Once I set it to my monitor's actual refresh rate it's buttery smooth.

18 : Anonymous2021/03/06 18:59 ID: gpzxi3g

I know it has nothing to do with the port but is there a way to get the HDR on pc like it looks on PS4 ? On pc it's really subpar and not nearly as good looking

19 : Anonymous2021/03/06 19:41 ID: gq055jq

I played it on a 1060 after just two patches came out and I had no issues at all except a little bit of frameloss every now and then in the DLC area.

20 : Anonymous2021/03/06 21:53 ID: gq0vs2k

As someone who got almost 100% completion on this game on pc I can outright say the game is not just working but one of my favourite games ever. If you can look past some wonky cutscenes the game is perfect with all game features and in game entities loading fine. I understand the pc conversion was terrible at launch but in my 40+ hours I experienced less then 5 in game optical glitches and a couple more in cut scene glitches. Well worth the buy

21 : Anonymous2021/03/06 22:32 ID: gq13tjf

I don't have time to watch this right now, but as someone who's interested in trying it at some point would I be better off on PC or PS4? I feel like personally I've noticed that games that people will call "totally awful pc ports" still run fine and have better resolution and performance, they just don't have some of the nice stuff people want on PC. Are the bugs a major issue or is it on balance a better experience on PC?

ID: gq294oy

If you have hardware better than a PS4 then yes, it’s a much smoother and prettier experience. 99% of the bugs have been ironed out and it’s a blast.

I played it at 100fps+ and finished it at launch and didn’t have any issues in 100 hours of play, and now it’s even better.

22 : Anonymous2021/03/06 16:10 ID: gpz2l3j

Runs fine on my RTX 2060 but I don't particularly enjoy the game. Sneaking past all the creatures was like erm... I don't know, it was interesting but not as great as I'd heard.

23 : Anonymous2021/03/06 16:39 ID: gpza4x7

I started playing through after one of the later patches (the one before they fixed some grass rendering issue recently), and I didn't have any issues other than when I ran an unstable GPU OC; got the OC stable and had no issues. Played at 1440p with everything maxed, 100FPS solid on a 3090, no stutters. I think this game is sensitive to spikes in GPU load, so if you can monitor load (ex: MSI Afterburner) and then get your settings to a point where your GPU isn't sitting at a constant 100% load, the game will run consistently smooth.

To get a stutter-free experience, I cranked all settings because I could (->3090), then used a frame limiter to find what max frame rate I could consistently run while keeping the GPU load under ~98% usage. I only used the in-game frame limiter in the early version of the game and it seemed to introduce more stutter, using nvidia Inspector or control panel to limit frames was smooth. The driver-level frame limiter always seems better than the in-game options.

I found that I could run at 100FPS without stutters, so for a permanent solution, I used the in-game refresh rate setting to force my monitor to 100Hz and disabled the frame limiter in the driver. Since I'm using G-Sync settings (vsync on in driver, vsync off in game), that capped the frame rate and provided a consistently smooth experience.

ID: gpzh0pe

Minor note: 100 FPS on a monitor configured for 100 Hz with V-Sync enabled means you’re using V-Sync as you’ve gone past the ceiling of where G-Sync is active.

It’s why the recommended G-Sync settings are all about capping the frame rate to 3-4 FPS below the configure refresh rate (so 96-97 FPS on your setup) — if you get closer to max refresh rate you’ll go past the effective G-Sync ceiling and incur the same input latency as result V-Sync.

24 : Anonymous2021/03/06 17:00 ID: gpzeq8q

I remember playing it a month back and got between 40-60 fps on a RTX 2070 Max-Q at Ultra settings. The game is more playable on PC now.

25 : Anonymous2021/03/06 17:58 ID: gpznq31

I've finished the game with only 2 crashes. Constant 60 fps on my 4k TV and between 75-85 on my 1440p monitor. 1600AF paired with 2060

ID: gq1nyit

I don’t understand I have a better processor and graphics card and play at 1440p and am constantly dropping below 20 FPS

26 : Anonymous2021/03/07 00:17 ID: gq1om8b

so can we adjust FoV? that is one thing that really sets apart a good port

ID: gq299t1

Yes, it was available since launch.

27 : Anonymous2021/03/07 01:44 ID: gq1y7fp

What was wrong with it? I've been playing since the pc launch and I haven't had any issues, besides my computer not being perfectly up to standards

ID: gq20649

Performance is kind of meh. I meet the recommended requirements yet my performance is all over the place on medium settings

28 : Anonymous2021/03/06 18:34 ID: gpzswgo

No matter how good the pc port is. It can make this blend ass game shine. It was one of the dullest and most uncreative gameplay loops I've saw.

29 : Anonymous2021/03/06 16:28 ID: gpz79gy

Played through on pretty much max settings, 4KHDR@60 with a 1080ti. Game is beyond beautiful, no bugs in 75+ hours. Can’t wait for forbidden west.

Edit: I guess this is an unpopular opinion...

30 : Anonymous2021/03/06 16:04 ID: gpz1b2y

A really generic game, upon playing this I was quite surprised to see so much positivity about this game when games like Assassins Creed get such a mixed response. Despite the concept being so unique, I thought the game was as derivative as it could possibly be.

Of course taste is subjective, so....

ID: gpz308d

you're definitely the minority, most people myself included think the story/gameplay/artwork was just amazing

ID: gpzeirc

Yea I get exactly what you mean! I was the same way! I think it was hyped so much that I felt it would something grander entirely? Idk but I platinumed the game...I still thought it was fun! But maybe I came in with too much expectation

Same for me, worst game i played in 2020.

I completed it just because I always heard good things about it but it was a slog. It made me hate open world games so much, thank God i played ghost of tsushima a few months later that removed that bad taste in my mouth.

I honestly don't know why I built a PC. All games being made are being developed for consoles first and PC optimization is an afterthought.

Spent 2 grand to build a powerful PC last year and I can't hit 144fps in shit except for games that are 5+ years old. And I'm not trying to play everything on ultra. I'm lucky to get a constant 60fps at all to be honest with how terrible developers are at optimizing for PC. I would have been better off buying a new console since 99% of the time games run like shit on PC.

ID: gq1alc1

All games made are being developed for consoles first

That's been the case with almost every game forever

I can't hit 144fps in shit

You need realistic expectations. I don't know who promised you 144 fps in every game at any resolution but that expectation is ridiculous.

Welcome to pc gaming

ID: gq27hto

If you spent 2 grand and 99% of the games you play run like shit then you fucked up.
