Outriders – Interim Dev Update – July 13th

1 : Anonymous2021/07/13 15:17 ID: ojhq7g

Hi everyone,

As you know we were hoping to release our latest patch today. We have, however, made the difficult decision to push the patch back to Thursday. We’ve explained this decision below – please do take the time to read it as it contains important information.

tl;dr: We encountered a couple crash issues and need your help to determine the risk they may pose!

During our final tests of this latest patch, our team encountered two different crash scenarios, as described below:

Issue 1: A rare issue that, after installing the patch, appeared to cause the game to crash on launch for a small number of testers. After a certain number of these launch crashes, the game launched without any issues and the crashes did not reappear. Issue 2: An issue that can cause the game to crash for players when returning to the lobby from a multiplayer session. Theory: This crash may only occur when one of the party members is a Pyromancer and has specific skills (e.g Heatwave or Overheat?) and mods (e.g Tidal Wave?) equipped.

Throughout our ongoing work on Outriders, we only encountered these issues for the first time when testing the latest patch. Using specific reproduction steps, we are able to trigger these crashes between 20% to 40% of the time.

However, our recent community research indicates that both of these crashes may already be present in the game but have never been formally diagnosed until now (because testing didn’t encounter them). If this is the case, then this patch wouldn’t actually introduce any new issues and could be considered “safe”.

So here’s where we ended up today: Option A: Release the patch today, having only partial information about these encountered crashes and running the risk of introducing new issues, including crash on launches, into the game for an unknown number of players. The fixes for these issues would be rolled into the next available patch once we’ve identified and resolved the root cause. Option B: Push back the entire patch to fully understand these issues, fix them, retest the patch for a number of days and then release the patch sometime next week at the earliest. This in turn could also delay the next patch thereafter. Given the already long wait in-between our last and this current patch, we want to avoid delays as much as possible. Option C: Delay the current patch till this Thursday to gather more information about whether these issues (and how often they occur) are already prevalent in the game and how often they may occur. The fixes for these issues would be rolled into the next available patch once we’ve identified and resolved the root cause.

We have opted for Option C and we need your help to determine whether this is the best move to make.

Please let us know in this thread if you feel that you have recently (in the past few weeks) encountered either Issue 1 (Crash on Launch Subthread) or Issue 2 (Crash on Return to Lobby Subthread). As usual, the more information you can provide, the more likely it is that we will be able to identify and resolve them.

What happens next? If we, alongside the community, are able to determine that both of these issues are already present in the game, we will go ahead and aim to release the patch this Thursday. With community data about under which circumstances these issues appear, it will also be easier for us to identify and fix these issues in a future patch. RISK: It is possible that something within the patch has increased the frequency at which these crashes appear, but this will be very difficult to determine in the time we have. If we are unable to determine that both of these crashes are already present in the game, this would indicate that one (or both) of them would have been introduced as part of this patch. The patch would therefore need to be reworked.

We appreciate that this isn’t ideal and not what you wanted to hear today. Whilst we attempt to cover every single scenario in player behaviour and set up, the complexity of gamecode can make this very difficult to do every single time, especially on PC. Even more so under COVID working restrictions where most of us are still required to work from home.

Nevertheless, we are determined to continue enhancing and improving the Outriders experience and will continue to keep you in the loop with the latest. We also very much appreciate all those community members who believe in what we’re trying to achieve and would like to thank everyone for your continued help in making Outriders the best it can be.

I chatted about this here.

Comment by thearcan:

Thanks for the info - which mods do you use for those skills?

Comment by thearcan:

Thanks for the info! Have you found that these crashes are more frequent after a patch release or are they fairly random?

Comment by thearcan:

Thanks for the info - which skills and mods do you use?

Comment by thearcan:

PC particularly for the crash on launch issue, but we're not excluding other platforms from our investigation and it would be valuable to hear from anyone encountering these issues on any platform.

Comment by thearcan:

We including information of what would be in the next patch in our recent dev update here.

Comment by thearcan:

Thanks!

Tidal Wave is the below mod:

Heatwave: The skill can be activated 1 more time before triggering the Cooldown.

So you may be relying on a different mod combination. Which is pretty valuable to know in itself given that you said you have a stable experience.

Comment by thearcan:

You make a fair point, but we have to straddle that line between keeping people informed and being called uncommunicative because we're not talking enough.

When we bring players closer to understanding the dev cycle, it exposes all the normal issues developers face throughout years of development....

Comment by thearcan:

Thanks for the info! Interesting to hear that you encountered the crash when attempting to join an MP party (rather than leaving one). That's another angle to look into...

Comment by thearcan:

Thanks for the post! A few of the things you've mentioned are already on our tracked investigations thankfully.

Interesting note regarding moaning winds though - we have a fix in place in a future patch for a moaning winds issue but im not sure if it's the same one as you describe. Will be keen to...

Comment by thearcan:

Just to confirm - you're saying it always takes "2 starts" to get going? Since you mention that it happens a lot but it also launches after the second go?

Comment by thearcan:

This or something very similar has happened since launch for me. Steam, 980ti, 32GB, 3600X.

Interesting! Does it happen every patch? Or just fairly regularly? Every day?

Comment by thearcan:

Thank you!

Comment by thearcan:

Thanks for the info - I'm very hopeful that precisely this patch will help you with your sign in issue, but we're continuing to spend time investigating it!

Delay the patch

4 : Anonymous2021/07/13 16:48 ID: h51z1wb

I say don't realease patch until those bugs do not reappear. If that goes past Thurs then so be it.

5 : Anonymous2021/07/13 17:17 ID: h5231fs

I would rather hear about what buffs were going to be added to ea class.

ID: h52jcvh

Me too lol.

6 : Anonymous2021/07/13 15:25 ID: h51nsin

Option c sounds like the right move

7 : Anonymous2021/07/13 15:26 ID: h51numq

You guys are damned if you do and damned if you don't because so many people are out to get you. I personally think you should wait and troubleshoot. Delaying a patch won't be nearly the negative press as more bugs will be, the latter just gives haters more fuel for the fire.

Keep up the amazing work. I love your game.

ID: h51qq2q

A lot of launch players are just getting frustrated with constant pushback on these patches. It’s not supposed to be a live service game yet we are getting updates and delays as if it is one.

ID: h51zq77

They are pushing back the patch for the right reasons. And for the “if it’s not a live service game why are we getting updates”….. do you want them to stop trying to fix the game? I really don’t understand that sentiment.

ID: h51si37

well, it was not supposed to be a live service, but a full game.

has been this a full game any time? Remember there is ppl who can not even log in yet.

8 : Anonymous2021/07/13 15:33 ID: h51osos

I would prefer option B but if you feel the need to go with option C, I understand.

9 : Anonymous2021/07/13 16:03 ID: h51swhk

Personal I have around 800 hrs invested and the first 400 hrs were played on the Xbox one x and the second 400 hrs were played on the series x. On the one x I experienced the most crashes. However since I switched to the series x I have not seen any crashes except twice and both were in zehidies upgrading menus when increasing gear attributes. Other then those two instances I have never experienced a crash since I switched to the series x.

A list of things I still have noticed since the game launched. Some of these may already be known and I have just missed the thread that has noted these issues.

Schorchlands after you drain the water, that area is extremely buggy/laggy for any players that are not host.

Trickster revert time blocks player movement if you’re not the trickster. (The pillar looking thing)

Skill life leach seems to stop working still in some instances. More noticeable when playing trickster or techno. (You can be spamming skills and have all skill life leach on armor and weapons and it still will not proc)

Moaning winds does more damage when playing as non host. (Have tested this out extensively with friends.) Both players have exact build (character class, armor, weapons, skills, class tree, and mods) the player that is not host will always do significantly more damage with moaning winds and I am pretty sure that this isn’t supposed to be happening.

Other little suggestions for QOL

Increase time for CT15 gold completion on boom town, eye of storm, and Colosseum. It’s extremely tough even for a full team with the best DPS builds this would also give the opportunity to use other builds.

Remove the invisible wall at start of pillar on Archways as this was never necessary to be implemented when it was during the first couple weeks at launch.

PS: I understand that most of the devs have moved onto the next projects but in my personal opinion Outriders is the best game I’ve seen in a long time. It would be nice if the man power could be reverted back to this and Outriders be made a live service game. A lot of potential and could be a good investment for PCF and SquareEnix again just wishful thinking 🙂

PSS: Again I appreciate everything

an the devs are doing and the constant communication we have seen since before the demo.

ID: h521pi6

Thanks for the post! A few of the things you've mentioned are already on our tracked investigations thankfully.

Interesting note regarding moaning winds though - we have a fix in place in a future patch for a moaning winds issue but im not sure if it's the same one as you describe. Will be keen to hear more about whether the issue persists once we implement our fix.

ID: h524xy1

As always thanks for your response!

Yeah I thought the moaning winds was an interesting one. Just something we noticed. We tend to have friendly competitions to see who can have the best runs on an expedition. It’s not game breaking but would be nice if it gets resolved.

I’ll keep an eye out for when the moaning winds patch drops and test it further thereafter.

One other issue I forgot to mention that I haven’t seen tracked yet.

For Xbox party game invite (after a certain amount of time the option becomes grayed out and not active have to go back to lobby and select new character if that doesn’t work then have to restart game to fix) everyone I play with is on the Xbox series x but this also occurred during the Xbox one x. This has been since the demo.

Any information regarding this issue would be greatly appreciated 🙂

ID: h525409

The Scorched swamp is ridiculous. That’s been since the demo. I just stand on the hillside and play

ID: h55fifr

There were no expedition in the demo? But it is rediculous

10 : Anonymous2021/07/13 15:43 ID: h51q5dg

You guys have made a wise decision here imo. As a pyro running those skills lately (and im p sure I have tidal wave, that's the width increase mod right?), I have not experienced this bug, disconnecting us on returning to lobby.

Best of luck troubleshooting, and looking forward to the patch :3

ID: h51sut9

Thanks!

Tidal Wave is the below mod:

Heatwave: The skill can be activated 1 more time before triggering the Cooldown.

So you may be relying on a different mod combination. Which is pretty valuable to know in itself given that you said you have a stable experience.

ID: h523yb9

Oh, yeah that's right. I have a short cooldown and don't use the additional wave mods. Thanks for clarifying.

11 : Anonymous2021/07/13 15:30 ID: h51odat

As far as I'm concerned just make it right. Waiting a few more days or even next week is not the end of the world. The crashes have been there obviously so it most likely you are noticing them now. I personally am fine with your decision to release the patch on Thursday and use these couple of days longer to identify when the crash is happening so you can add a fix in the following patch.

The crashes happens fairly rarely now compared to older builds so it's not really a game breaking thing. It can be resolved next patch.

Just do it right.

12 : Anonymous2021/07/13 15:46 ID: h51qm7s

Have a OUTRIDERS PTS then, I would download and install it to help test patches if that would help the game out, I love this game. but, since launch I have had issues, like Fps dropping to 8 FPS when moving my Mouse around, it's really bad when I first launch the game. happened like ever few seconds. really high usage off memory. like 10gb too 12GB making the game really laggy and stuttering, as you know Windows uses 4GB, so, my 16GB is being maxed out. I guess that's what causing the really bad stuttering ? Really bad netcode. like I'm playing with friends in my area, who lives 20 minutes away from me, on the same ISP. and it's a bit laggy. not as bad as Launch. but it can be improved. I play with friends from UK in Destiny 2 and it isn't as laggy or delay as OUTRIDERS. and I'm in the U.S, EST reign. really Hope you add AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution as I don't have a RTX GPU atm.

ID: h52i44r

Just FYI, sorry for hijacking the thread, but I have the same stuttering issues running on a 3080, i9 10700, 32 GB. It’s not a hardware issue, search this forum and a lot of people are having the stuttering problems. The best “fixes” I have read are to force the game to run in DX 11, and sign out of your Steam friends list. Doing both of these greatly reduced the stuttering on my end, but did not eliminate it entirely, still troubleshooting.

13 : Anonymous2021/07/13 15:30 ID: h51oeye

Once again sounds like PC. Can you please let us know on which platform you are seeing these issues.

ID: h51pcxi

PC particularly for the crash on launch issue, but we're not excluding other platforms from our investigation and it would be valuable to hear from anyone encountering these issues on any platform.

14 : Anonymous2021/07/13 15:55 ID: h51rsd0

Please option A or C. I just want to get closer to buffs and shit and I’ll do anything.

15 : Anonymous2021/07/13 16:29 ID: h51whk9

This seems like it should be a POLL.
I select B since this patch doesn't do much anyway

16 : Anonymous2021/07/13 19:51 ID: h52nvgz

I think it's wise to wait and try to sort out these issues. The game does not need any more crashing. I know the last patch was supposed to fix "regular" crashing, but it didn't work for me. My game crashes every 1-2 hours. Both in groups and solo, in endgame and campaign. Frustrating.

17 : Anonymous2021/07/14 00:28 ID: h53m5r1

Who cares? Can you tell us the patch notes please instead of a long winded post that could’ve been summed up in one sentence?

18 : Anonymous2021/07/13 15:18 ID: h51mtwr
Crash on Return to Lobby - Issue 2 Subthread: An issue that can cause the game to crash for players when returning to the lobby from a multiplayer session. Theory: This crash may only occur when one of the party members is a Pyromancer and has specific skills (e.g Heatwave or Overheat?) and mods (e.g Tidal Wave?) equipped.

Have you encountered this issue before?

If yes, please let us know if you've noticed a pattern as to when this issue occurs. Please also share your (or your co-op partner's) character's class, mods and class nodes. Of particular interest would be Heatwave and Overheat related information.
ID: h51o32y

I’ve used Pyromancer since i started playing a few months back, however never encountered any crashes with the game constantly, currently i run heatwave, thermal bomb and faser beam, i could try later run it with heatwave and overheat and see what happens

ID: h51o7x6

happens all the time when on my pyro, i run heat wave and overheat on top tree

ID: h51p0or

Thanks for the info - which mods do you use for those skills?

ID: h51ozle

I have encountered this crash many times under a variety of circumstances (different classes and builds), including, though extremely rare, when playing solo. It does seem to be more common when I am on my Pryo (I do run the Tidal Wave mod and the Overheat skill), but that could simply be since he is my main.

I'm on a Series X. So are the people that I play with.

ID: h51pfn4

This has been happening for me a lot, not sure if it's related but it happens mostly on my devastator, and only when I play with my partner (who is a Pyro that loves Overheat).

ID: h51p78b

Several times in last week. Pyro - Ash, Heatwave, Overheat. Bottom tree. Also once today in coop when party leader was starting expedition. Crashes to a black screen, resolved by restarting game.

ID: h51uq4n

Twice I have failed to join a multiplayer party and been kicked to lobby. The game then freezes and goes black screen. I have to close the game and re launch it as no amount of waiting resolves it. I'm on XBOX Series S.

I am a pyromancer main. I use Overheat, Heatwave and Ashblast. I never got into anyone's game so I highly doubt their character class will have affected the crash.

Edit: I also have tidal wave. Full Atari gear. Can share more of my mods if needed 😀

I only use pyro and have always used Overheat and Heatwave and Ash blast when these crash have happened.

Hope this helps 🙂

I personally feel that you either wait till thursday or just wait until its smoothed out. I've had a real blast playing your game and got some friends to try it out who all feel the same. Thank you for making such an awesome game and being open with the community recently!

ID: h51w5mn

Thanks for the info! Interesting to hear that you encountered the crash when attempting to join an MP party (rather than leaving one). That's another angle to look into...

ID: h51o14s

Yes this has happened to me frequently...I have been playing since the demo with 1k hours

ID: h51p1jt

Thanks for the info - which skills and mods do you use?

19 : Anonymous2021/07/13 18:51 ID: h52frgz

To be honest i do not understand why developers ask community about something like this. Guys ... you want to make everything right or ruin player experience with bugs? Delay and repair it of course.

20 : Anonymous2021/07/13 15:37 ID: h51pd86

I crash multiple times running duos with another pyro (Xbox one)

21 : Anonymous2021/07/13 15:52 ID: h51rf9i

I agree with option C decision, as I do not want to see more crashes.

22 : Anonymous2021/07/13 15:53 ID: h51rk16

Can't even remember when last crash was on my xbox one s. Hasn't been an issue. In multiplayer get party host failure and host connection lost a billion times...not crashes

23 : Anonymous2021/07/13 16:07 ID: h51th31

I have never encountered either crash and feel that they both occur at low-risk moments. It should be more than safe to release the patch.

24 : Anonymous2021/07/13 17:24 ID: h523zbb

I'd lean towards C if it's my pick but I mostly play solo so these likely wouldn't affect me.

25 : Anonymous2021/07/13 18:27 ID: h52chp6

Go C, the game is working as intended we don't want you to get more backlash like when the game launched with a total game meltdown again. We know you're trying and we the community are here for it!

26 : Anonymous2021/07/13 18:30 ID: h52d0e8

Option C

27 : Anonymous2021/07/13 21:18 ID: h52zf8w

People still play this game?

28 : Anonymous2021/07/14 00:52 ID: h53oxlv

Delay please. You are never going to have a bug-free release. However it is another thing to release something you know is going to cause problems. Outriders has lost enough goodwill as it is. People can wait.

29 : Anonymous2021/07/14 01:38 ID: h53u6q7

Yo can we get another god rolled legendary too though?
