Would buying an RTX 3080 make no sense if I have Ryzen 5 2600? Would the combination allow me to smash RDR2 at 1440p?

And Cyberpunk and the Witcher 3

2 : Anonymous2021/09/16 18:18 ID: hd3xm9k

My 2600x was a massive bottleneck for my 3080. Many of my games saw min frames go up almost double when I upgraded to a 5600x

This.

You can run benchmarks all day long, even at 4K, that show no or minimal differences at a surface level and avg.

But min fps, frame times, and stutter? oh boy does zen+ fall short.

If you're able to buy a GPU at a price to deem fair to you, go for it. The 2600 will heavily bottleneck any high end 3000 series gpu in cpu intensive games, but based on your motherboard you could simply drop in a Ryzen 2 or 3 and fix that.

Then i would go directly for a zen 3

4 : Anonymous2021/09/16 16:42 ID: hd3jcnx

It depends on the game. I can tell you anecdotally warzone was definitely CPU bottlenecked by my 2600x when I got my 3090, but warzone is optimized like garbage anyway.

3070 would most likely be a better pairing, but it will be mostly fine, even if you can gain a bit from upgrading.

6 : Anonymous2021/09/16 16:34 ID: hd3i4p6

Why wouldnt it make sense? 3080 is fine with 2600.

Check some 3080 benchmarks to see how it'd do in rdt2 at 1440.

But those would have been tested with an I9 or something

ID: hd3libd

RDR2 is almost entirely GPU-bound. You wont get the same FPS as an OC'd i9 but you will get close.

Ryzens only testing, 4 generations of ryzens.

Ryzen 2000 is fine at 4K and mostly 1440P

even a intel 6500 i5 works fine with a 3080. sure there is a bit of a bottleneck but honestly, you get most of the advantages and in the event you upgrade later, well you'll get even better uplift.

I mean shit, i've customers with RX 580's in Q6600's that they are still using but are definitely needing an upgrade... they still perform quite remarkably well.

You sure about that? I had an old overclocked q8400 that I threw a 7870 into with clean windows 10 on a new SSD and 8gb ddr3. The only game it was ment to run was diablo 3 and it couldn't even handle that. The game would stutter constantly. I swapped it for a low end stock 4th gen i5 and had zero issues after. I doubt anyone is playing today on old core 2 series hardware and having an even remotely decent experience.

Since i built and have upgraded those machines through the years.. yes. You'd be surprised how well vulkan and dx12 games run on really old gear these days.

Diablo III however is a poor benchmark, that game is beyond terribly optimized for what you get graphically.

Weird, I remember a friend playing Diablo 3 with a 775 dual core just fine. Maybe a decade of updates made it more demanding.

It doesn't make sense to pay that amount of money for a 1440p card. Get a 6800xt and 16gb of vram.

ID: hd4tko9

Why not get a 3090 instead? It’s has 24gb vram and 24gb vram > 16gb Vram

Stop shilling for AMD, they are roughly equal in both price and performance and it's his personal choice. I'm also a fan of AMD, but I still think you should try to push away your personal biases when giving advice to people.

Will be totally fine

10 : Anonymous2021/09/16 17:26 ID: hd3pyl2

It will be OK, but you may experience a lower average framerate and more hitches/stutters (worse 1% low framerate dips) compared to Ryzen 3000 or newer processor. Should still be perfectly playable though.

Would work quite well, I run RDR2 at 1440p with a 6800 and average over 100 fps with most of the settings maxed, and that's without using DLSS that you could use with the 3080. At 1440p the load is going to be mostly on the GPU so having an older CPU shouldn't matter much.

Witcher 3 should be less than no issue. CP2077 will run fine, I have mostly maxed settings in there too except for a couple that are big hitters, like having SSRQ set one notch down from max, and I get in the 80 fps average range with my 6800, again without the DLSS you could use with the 3080.

That said, DLSS will be a bit less effective with the 2600 than it would be with a higher end CPU, since you're effectively running the game at a lower resolution, and the lower the resolution it is the more the load starts to shift to the CPU, but it would still give you some boost.

If you're curious I could screen shot and post the settings I run in CP2077 and RDR2 to get some idea, which you could probably bump up a bit from there if you really wanted.

Agree with others, but also want to put in that it’ll last you through an upgrade to the next gen of processors so you can upgrade to Zen 4 with the next mobo slot next year and still have a gpu that’ll fit fine.

13 : Anonymous2021/09/16 19:25 ID: hd47hoh

youll be fine with witcher, i ran it 60fps no problem with the 2600 and an rx580

all these games are gpu bound

14 : Anonymous2021/09/16 19:34 ID: hd48tgr

I mean it will work but the CPU will bottleneck it in a good amount of games.

15 : Anonymous2021/09/16 21:26 ID: hd4p4k9

You will be CPU-bound in all of those games. More so with an nVidia card than an AMD card.

16 : Anonymous2021/09/16 21:39 ID: hd4qx9s

Witcher 3 should be ok but both RDR2 and CP2077 are super heavy on the cpu and your 2600x would be a bottleneck.

You can get the card and it will work, just be aware that you will need to upgrade the cpu as well in time to really run the gpu at 100%.

17 : Anonymous2021/09/16 21:51 ID: hd4smi2

If you run against the gpu limits you'll be above 60fps. The 2600 won't be pushing 144fps in newer stuff, but that doesn't mean it can't support a 3080.

18 : Anonymous2021/09/16 22:46 ID: hd4zrtr

It would make sense if you're planning on upgrading the CPU next other wise the CPU will semi cripple the GPU, You will still performance just not all of it.

Edit: Speaking generally here not RD

you need Zen 3 for cyberpunk
