Gyro vs Mouse vs Controller Sticks. Why isn’t gyro/motion officially supported on every Shooting game on Ps5/4?
2 : Anonymous2021/09/25 18:51 ID: he93jva

I turned it in in TLOU2 and loved it, and have been very upset that it isn't an option in any of the next games I've played. Like...come on, gyro aiming would be a GODSEND in Horizon!

ID: he9hde3

Hold on, WHAT? This is actually a thing? Damn I need to replay this game. Where in settings?

ID: he9kdvp

I tried it in TLOU2 when they added it to see what all the fuss was about, and I hated it. I honestly straight up don't understand why people like it

ID: he9s1o1

In fairness, TLOU2 does it wrong on purpose cause they don't want you being super accurate. They want you to waste ammo. Try it in Days Gone, and you'll be making headshots from obscene distances

3 : Anonymous2021/09/25 21:22 ID: he9np8k

OP, I am 100% onboard with gyro as an option in every console first or third person game, but it sadly won't happen.

At least you can get that level of precision playing almost every PSVR game, which will be even more immersive with better tech in PSVR2 releases.

4 : Anonymous2021/09/25 14:55 ID: he87n1w

This seems so dumb, but is pretty huge when it’s implemented well. Can’t wait til this gets bigger.

ID: he8z549

This, it's not enough that it's there, it also needs to be implemented well. I'm playing Rogue Company which does have it, but it's kind of buggy and needs work.

5 : Anonymous2021/09/25 18:06 ID: he8xd8c

Days Gone implements gyro aiming very well, and imo, even though it takes a bit to get the hang of it, once you do, aiming feels more intuitive and natural. At least more single player games should start considering it.

ID: he902es

I love having it in the last of us 2. Haven't tried days gona yet but I'm glad its there.

ID: he8y4p7

Especially single player games should have this. Doom eternal would be perfect on ps5 if it had gyro aiming.

For multiplayer games that has crossplay then gyro aiming should 100% be an option.

Non crossplay games however would become unfair. But tbh they are already unfair since people use XIM adapters and have pro controllers with backbuttons. And for games like CoD motion aimin won’t be that much better since CoD have one of the strongest aim assists in game.

6 : Anonymous2021/09/25 17:36 ID: he8tcro

I recently moved from pc to console and really don't understand why console players resist gyro aiming so much. It's as close as you can get to mouse accuracy with a controller. Maybe people don't quite understand how it's supposed to be used. Most think it's meant to replace joystick entirely but on the contrary it's there to make small adjustments that lets so fine tune your aim.

ID: he8zoz2

I would love to see gyro aiming with the dualsense like I setup with my Steam controller, where the gyro only activates where you fully pull the left trigger all the way.

All the benefits of gyro-asking without the drawbacks of it "always-on" that I think turn off some people

ID: he90e1z

I agree that it works best with left trigger activation. That's also my default in steam controller but why full pull?

ID: he98pyj

Honestly I usually sit in odd positions and flop my controller all over the place constantly; if gyro was an option I’d have it turned off for that reason and I selfishly like other people not having the option to turn it on and do horrible things to me 😮

ID: he98xsu

I use gyro at odd positions all the time. You need very little movement. That's what people seem unable to understand.

ID: hea0cu0

Because they don't care about precision. If they cared about precision they would have been playing games on PC with a mouse rather than on console wouldn't you think?

They enjoy what they have and don't need more. The people who want gyro aiming added tend to be people who aren't that used to regular controller aiming, aren't very good at it, wish it was as precise as a mouse. That's fine and it's understandable why they want gyro, but they should understand why most people don't care at all.

ID: he8yln1

Because we've tried it and it's not been great so far? Usually devs have tried to replace the analog stick and failed to make it a good experience, some do the hybrid solution you suggest but none has caught on so far.

Sure, it's popular on Nintendo consoles but let's be honest their audience isn't really into accuracy or competitive gaming. Even on PC we've yet to see a similar input method become popular (despite many attempts). It's a fun gimmic, great if you like it dude but it simply hasn't impressed irl.

ID: he8ztqt

Yeah I have had this conversation before and I know it doesn't go anywhere.

ID: he9en3t

Such a non opinion that adds nothing to the conversation. Its caught on everywhere except playstation and xbox. PC and switch games all allow the use of gyro. And it doesnt 'replace the analog stick' its used together with it. Im convinced that people who are against gyro havent used it because the majority of them have these non opinions that show an incredible misunderstanding of what gyro aiming is. And its frustrating because they arent a minority of people- people actually think like the above comment

ID: he992to

Because controller is the reason most of us have consoles.

I have a PC and ps5. Last gen I had a PC xbone and PS4.

Why did I play PS4 and xbone more than pc? Virtually every instance was the game was more fun on console because the controller makes it more fun.

Gyro isn't fun but gives an advantage. Therefore shouldn't be a thing or should be absolutely segregated out.

ID: he9ev4q

What gyro games have you played

ID: he9n903

Because controller is the reason most of us have consoles.

That sounds like the argument some may have had for sticking with black and white TVs when they started making color ones.

7 : Anonymous2021/09/25 17:41 ID: he8txis

Gyro aiming should be now in every game.

8 : Anonymous2021/09/25 21:05 ID: he9lj44

Gyro is the best thing ever invented. Playing sniper in paladins with gyro, completely unbalances the game, cause you get all the kills. The only reason gyro isn't in every fps game is because analog players would think they are playing against mouse users

ID: he9oy3n

If analog users have the gyro option available on all controllers they own and choose not to use it and adapt to it, that's on them. The playing field is theoretically level because everyone has access to gyro now. Failing to use the tools you are given doesn't mean anyone else is privileged.

9 : Anonymous2021/09/25 15:28 ID: he8bwru

I wish there was a way to have analog movement like thumbsticks with precision aiming of a mouse without having to hold one in each hand like a crazy person

ID: he8kbyj

Weirdly enough, the Wii remote plus nunchuck is the closest I've seen to this control scheme on a console

10 : Anonymous2021/09/25 18:15 ID: he8yloc

Just give me a refined version of this.

Or just give full m/k support to all multiplayer games, imo.

11 : Anonymous2021/09/25 22:43 ID: he9y1vj

Gyro is excellent. People just need to figure out it’s for small fine-tuning, not big movements. Big stick swing over to somebody, gyro to the head. It was pretty nice in BotW with a pro controller too iirc

12 : Anonymous2021/09/25 21:26 ID: he9obe0

Gyro aiming was proven to be an amazing improvement to the FPS genre as far back as Killzone 2 on PS3. Using Sixaxis to finely tune your aim with a sniper rifle felt incredible. It wasn't just a neat convenience: it was a revelation that should have become an automatic inclusion in ALL shooting games from that point forward.

Perks? No. Unlockable guns and skills? No. None of that is even close to necessary in a shooter. But the fact that folks don't demand and expect gyro aiming as a standard inclusion in modern shooters is insane. It's as necessary as dual joysticks are.

ID: he9q5j9

YES someone who gets it! KZ2 was The bomb even if it ran like ass. I loved fine-tune aiming the sniper rifle with SIXAXIS while making larger, faster adjustments with the right stick.

ID: he9qdmw

It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever that KZ2's implementation of gyro aiming hasn't become THE industry standard. Not even an option. Just the way things need to be, because it worked.

But instead, Call of Duty was elected the de facto ruler of all FPSes; so instead of the best controller innovation since dual sticks, we got an endless wave of games that progressively add perks and killstreak rewards to the players who are already winning. Now every game of everything is full of anti-catch-up mechanics that punish the newer, less experienced players while handing easier wins to people who play 22 hours of CoD a day.

The genre is absolutely worse for it all, and I've basically abandoned FPSes entirely.

13 : Anonymous2021/09/25 19:09 ID: he95xnk

Definitely! Loved it in Days Gone, my first experience with Gyro (besides Astro, which I felt it was too strong - although I didn't care to search for it on settings as it was such a minimal section of the game), then used it again on TLOU2 and man... After you have tried it out for a few hours and start getting the hang of it, it simply makes sense and feels like a progression of thumbstick aiming.

All these people complaining have barely tried it and simply dismissed for not understanding its purpose. Plus, the "competitive" arguments are bullshit. I'm sorry but if you consider yourself a "competitive player" you should be playing on PC with KB/M, as there's absolutely no other way currently to achieve such levels of precision. I also feel that these people have never even played a game like CS on PC with higher-skilled players. If you haven't played with a skilled KB/M player, you know nothing about cheating/hacking. Some people have honed their aiming to unspeakable degrees and reaction times using a mouse are far superior to anything even aim assist can offer you.

14 : Anonymous2021/09/25 18:29 ID: he90h52

This would make it another selling point for PS5 over Xbox. They really need to push for this an another option.

ID: he98spp

This would make Xbox the better place for shooters if the game didn't have cross play though.

15 : Anonymous2021/09/25 19:53 ID: he9bsq5

Never was interested in this. I do a lot better with thumb sticks and it would be awkward to move around while laying in bed which is where I usually play

ID: he9ccpn

I lay in bed and play with gyro.

Works fine.

And if you feel like you are better with sticks then you can use sticks. But that does not mean gyro shoud not an option.

Incoming , “oNLy iF tHEy mAkE iT aN oPtIoN I tRieD gYrO wItH tHe wIi aNd iTs gArbAgE” comments

ID: he92zs8

Ugh they're so dumb. People really like to talk out of their asses. Has there been any game in history of PlayStation that forces gyro, even?

17 : Anonymous2021/09/25 14:52 ID: he878ui

Because it gives an advantage which is why no one wants mouse and keyboard on console and why no one wants gyro...

I shouldn't have to change my control method to be on an even playing field.

ID: he88fq5

This would actually make the playingfield more even in Crossplay. Games could classify gyro as MnK so they wont be matched against stick users.

And you also have to remember that the sticks have aim assist that already makes them very competetive against a mouse. Especially in games like Warzone where aim assist is almost like a aim bot.

MnK support is becoming more common. So the other best thing to spare casual gaming on a couch is gyro aiming.

ID: he8cpau

it probably will make it more even against M&K, but against controller, you shouldn’t have to use a weird control system to evenly compete.

I think a better solution is adding controller only crossplay.

ID: he87h0s

Yeah gyro for me is a no go (tremors) that would certainly be a funny experience for people to watch.

ID: he8np73

gyro for me is a no go (tremors)

Those damn Graboids! 😉

ID: he881v6

Agreed. Anyone who has any doubts about this needs to play Splatoon 2 multiplayer on the Switch. Once you get up to a certain rank you basically need to force yourself to learn gyro aiming in order to compete anymore. An experienced gyro player will absolutely run circles around even the best of players with a Pro Controller. It seriously feels like you're up against keyboard and mouse players.

ID: he8b6ob

I don’t think many people realize this but many games on console support mouse and keyboard. More games on Xbox support it but on PS4/5 pretty big games like COD and FF14 do. I’ve played quite a bit of Cold War on PS5 with m+kb myself and it works exactly like it does on PC.

Advantages are dealt with anyway because almost everything is moving towards cross platform multiplayer. In fps games this just means that controller users get stupid strong aim assist and mouse users have to aim manually but can look around much faster and have much more precise camera control. Gyro just adds a little mouse-like free camera control to the mix.

ID: he98ibe

Cod is (supposed) to only match you with people also using mouse and keyboard. Putting you mainly with pc users meaning congrats you are at a disadvantage as pc users can turn detail down widen field of view etc.

Ff14 is an mmo with almost no competitive aspects there is a pvp mode but it's far from a major focus of the game at all.

The vast majority of cross play games so far either are mainly or entirely co op where pc has an advantage but it doesn't heavily effect the console user (see ff14) it virtually only puts the console user with pc users if the console user wants it (see cod) or it's unbalanced and people just accept it's shit or quit playing (see war thunder, cod when matchmaking fucks up)

The closest things to a vs mode game that is balanced with cross play is rocket league.

ID: he8kd9x

The whole advantage argument is mute though when considering that:

Scuff Controllers / Modded Controllers exist

some of those games that don't support gyro do support mouse and keyboard

the game could simply force a lower aim assist setting or turn it off entirely when using gyro

ID: he98q15

Cheating exists. Wow thanks captain.

Matchmaking for most of those games forces mouse and keyboard players to play with pc users only. Ending the debate. If you want to make gyro and mouse and keyboard be segregated from the majority that is fine.

This doesn't fix imbalance.

18 : Anonymous2021/09/25 20:08 ID: he9dxfa

Try gyro aiming on moving targets and while moving your character jumping sliding etc.. and see how awkward and tedious it is.

20 : Anonymous2021/09/25 17:41 ID: he8tzxu

Because it's not worth implementing it for the few people who would use it

21 : Anonymous2021/09/25 18:06 ID: he8xaor

Maybe there isn’t many users because it hs never been an optionin mainstream game.

Just look at the switch community. When splatoon was released it had default motion controls. Only few people liked them at first. But now almost everyone uses motion controls

If CoD of battlefield ever added the option I assure you it would become the standard.

Even Jackfrags (big BF youtuber) has said that Gyro/motion aiming option should become a standard in games

22 : Anonymous2021/09/25 18:31 ID: he90st9

It's huge on the switch though. Mainly because major games started using it and then others followed.

23 : Anonymous2021/09/25 20:02 ID: he9czx5

Have you guys heard of Flick stick?

24 : Anonymous2021/09/25 20:02 ID: he9d3tt

I! Should become an option too

25 : Anonymous2021/09/25 20:09 ID: he9dykw

I'd imagine that it's largely down to a lack of people demanding it. Developers only have so many resources when it comes to games, so if there really isn't a lot of demand for a specific feature, then they're unlikely to support it. That's why people were initially concerned about how much support the DualSense would get. So it's one of those thing that you really have to make it clear to developers that you want to see more of.

I was actually surprised that Naughty Dog patched it into TLoU Part II. It could be a good sign for future support of gyro aiming if their next game launches with it Day 1. It'd allow for people to really make it clear to them and everyone else that they want to see it used more. And since their next game is most likely Factions, they'll probably be able to pull data to find out just how many people are using it.

26 : Anonymous2021/09/25 23:33 ID: hea4d2x

It feels like people still think this is the Wii era with shoehorned in motion controls, we don't need to break out the playstation move or connect. Gyro is a nice option. I love being able to make microadjustments to help aim better in Breath of the Wild. It's more accurate and immersive. Great stuff. People are mostly talking about multiplayer pvp games here but it would greatly improve single player games on PS5 to have as an option

27 : Anonymous2021/09/25 17:45 ID: he8uho1

Gyro aiming seems incredibly bad for your wrists. While your fingers are made for fine movements, I can't imagine gyro aiming being good for your wrists at all. Anyone more knowledgeable feel free to correct.

28 : Anonymous2021/09/25 18:30 ID: he90mdt

I broke my rotator cuff and fractured my wrists. Gyro is much easier and zero stress on me. Having to make miniscule movements with the thumbstick however absolutely kills my wrist as the muscles needed are strained and makes me have to put it down after a while.

Gyro feels better intuitively and is ergonomically better and less stressful.

29 : Anonymous2021/09/25 18:01 ID: he8wpao

Well I don’t see it being worse than a mouse.

And fingers are good for fine adjustments in real life but when controlling thumbsticks those fine adjustments wont tranfer to the game.

Imagine using very high sensitivity mouse on a 4 square inch table. Thats pretty much a thumbstick.

Gyro on the other hand is similar to a mouse which has a room to move and the sensitivity setting wont lock your maximum camera speed to a certain value.

30 : Anonymous2021/09/25 15:30 ID: he8ca8n

for competitive shooters, I don’t think it belongs in them. people either love it or hate it. I personally love it, but people shouldn’t have to use a different and arguably weird control system to compete on an even playing field.

31 : Anonymous2021/09/25 15:33 ID: he8cnft

They could make it that gyro users will be matched against PC controlle

For crossplay gyro would be amazing. But I do understand why some people dont want it for non crossplatform games.

32 : Anonymous2021/09/25 15:44 ID: he8e440

Most shooters have some kind of aim asssist for controllers and that could be disabled if gyro is enabled to make things more fair

33 : Anonymous2021/09/25 15:35 ID: he8cv5s

yeah I’m perfectly fine with it in M&K crossplay games, just not against controller players.

34 : Anonymous2021/09/25 21:15 ID: he9mwfz

My guess is that because gyro controls are missing on the Xbox, 3rd party games won't add it to favor the PS platform in shooters.

35 : Anonymous2021/09/25 16:55 ID: he8nkyj

Because Sony doesn't mandate much for a dev. There are a few restrictions (every platform has them except pc) and that's about it. They took this stance back in the ps1 days.bit was why so many devs flocked to sony from Nintendo.

Imo ever fps or first person view game should support VR. But much like gyro that's not gonna happen.

36 : Anonymous2021/09/25 19:42 ID: he9ae9j

Gyro is the sole reason I bought the Quake 1 remaster. It's so much fun! Wish it was in more FPS games.
