TL;DW scores 8/10
ID: hhzr3uhID: hi01gr6Is linear gameplay a bad word now? Since when is a tight, singular story now considered less than?
Not implying thats what you meant OC, but I've seen this term used a lot recently in a a negative way and it kinda confuses me
ID: hhztd17Expected nothing less from the developers. In my opinion they are much better devs than the guys who did Avengers and I knew based on Rise of the Tomb Raider that Avengers would end up the way it did.

No games-as-a-service. No multiplayer. No microtransactions. Heaven on Earth.
ID: hhztswmThis needs to be higher, this is the real selling point. A lot of people i saw are still "traumatized" by Marvel's Avengers and it's fair, but this is an entirely different studio and it's an actual "no bullshit, just game". Bless Eidos Montreal.
ID: hi00pb3I can’t tell you how much I tried to love Marvel’s Avengers. I am a HUGE MCU fan and bought it day one despite all of the terrible reviews. I even convinced myself it would be worth the grind to max level Iron Man (narrator’s voice: it wasn’t).
The most infuriating part is how amazing SOME aspects of the game feel. Outside of Hulk, every Avenger’s fighting style feels so unique and satisfying, and there were beautiful visuals sprinkled everywhere.
The ONLY reason this game sucks so much was because of the business decision to make it a game-as-a-service, and it rightfully receives the hate it gets as one of the biggest wasted opportunities in gaming history.
ID: hi0hju5but this is an entirely different studio
Business decisions like MTX and GaaS are usually made by the parent company and/or publisher, which in this case is the same as Avengers: Square-Enix. Thus making some people skeptical they would repeat that same mistake with GotG, even if the devs are a different team altogether.
ID: hhzz80iYup, exact "Jedi: Fallen Order" vibes.
People rightfully hated on Battlefront 2 and The Avengers games, both live service and walked back on promises for microtransactions, then we got Jedi: Fallen Order that was a single-player campaign with no microtransactions or DLC, just a solid story and nothing else to worry about, and now we have GotG following a very similar situation.
ID: hhznr99Old school gamers rejoice!
ID: hhzvpnsI feel like buying it even though I don’t have time to play it… I like to reward developers like this haha.
-
One review I read described it as Uncharted in space, which sounds absolutely perfect to me.
ID: hhzhkazI wonder how long the game is then? There was someone who got an early copy commenting yesterday and they said there were no side missions in the game. I always found side missions to make the game feel more “open world” rather than a straight linear game. Rift Apart had it so that each world had one side optional side mission to do, but admittedly they were really short.
I’m still hyped for the game though!
ID: hhzhyv9Seems to be 18-20h per what I’ve read so far.
ID: hi0hzvmInteresting considering the game doesn't do puzzles, which is roughly a third of what UC is (with the other 2/3 being traversal and combat).
-
I don't know what shocks me more, that this is actually getting good reviews or the fact that it came seemingly out of nowhere and is already out. Won't be able to buy it for a while but since it's getting good reviews might as well hope that a sequel is getting made too.
-
Easy Allies also gave it an 8
Seems so far this game is not as good as Spider-Man PS4 but still much better than the Avengers game, going by review scores
ID: hhzcxmsComplete games are almost always better than GAAS, so it receiving better reviews is not surprising to be honest
ID: hi12g78It’s crazy that GAAS should not imply an unfinished game, especially at a $60-70 price tag. In theory you’re buying a complete game that then continues to support post launch with content.
Now it’s just an excuse to charge $60-70 and then release an unfinished product. I’m so fucking sick of it. It’s why I won’t buy Battlefield at launch, I know that shit will be broken
ID: hhzd3m9FF14 is the probably the only main exception right now
ID: hhzgn0gmuch better than the Avengers game
I mean… that’s a pretty low bar tbf
ID: hhzh2blAvengers did so much PR damage to Square Enix that everybody doubted this game and kept confusing the dev studio with Crystal Dynamics or just assumed it would be bad because it's a Square Enix marvel game. Glad to see Eidos-Montreal can still make quality games. Fingers crossed for Deus Ex 3!

IGN - Oh boy more 8s to give!
Seriously though, congratulations to Eidos-montreal
ID: hhzhoz6Hey man, IGN's 7-10 review scale is exacting and brutal!
ID: hhznkasA former IGN employee actually talked about that and why it happens.
Basically, games that are truly bad (let’s say scoring a 4 or lower) are usually indie garbage (like all that nonsense flooding the Switch eShop) and rarely make it to the orbit of these reviewers. AAA games, just by the nature of their production value, have to reeeeeeeeaally fuck up to be truly awful. Obviously there are exceptions, and being AAA doesn’t automatically mean it scores a 9 or 10, but they’re rarely very truly bad.
-
IGN gave it an 8, so did Easy Allies, and ACG slapped a "Buy" rating with the warning it might have some technical issues, that might be solved with Day 1 patch.
2021 sleeper hit.
ID: hhzjcxcSleeper hit means deep sales quickly I’m glad
-
I've been playing since Saturday and it's super fun. Some really challenging pure anarchy fights, only two glitches so far but nothing game breaking. Both easily worked around that I imagine will be fixed tomorrow.
I just wish the scouting visor was more detailed as it doesn't really show much.
-
ACG gave this a “Buy” and that’s all I needed lol
-
I can’t wait to pick this up! I’m really confused on why people keep bringing up the The Avengers though, isn’t this game developed by a completely different studio?
I kept seeing comments yesterday like “ever since The Avengers I’m just don’t have much hope for this game”, but isn’t that just like saying “ever since Battlefront 2 I just don’t have much hope for Jedi:Fallen Order.”
ID: hhzjzixTwo Reasons
They're ignorant They just want to farm karma ptsID: hhzyymrEidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics work together on their games. Each studio serves as support for the other studio's main game. They're all ex-Eidos (now Square's western studios).
ID: hi00516It's because they both are being distributed by square enix. People assume their the ones developing it when it's two different studios.
ID: hhzn5hjSowing FUD makes for easy karma
-
This seems like the perfect “wait for half price” game. Looks good
ID: hhziazpIt seriously looks fantastic, I’m really hyped to play it. Since it’s a single player campaign game I plan on buying it used, binging, and reselling, I have to imagine there will be used copies being sold in a couple weeks from people who beat the game!
ID: hhzko3mI’m all digital and want to keep everything for my kids. Hoping for a xmas sale
ID: hhzst6nTbf I’m not defending GAAS, but I think the sort of fomo they introduce is exactly to stop this and why boardrooms clearly love it.
There’s no real incentive to buy a single player game at launch, which is great for people like you or me, but is probably also the reason we see less of them.
ID: hi04k3bExactly. People complain all the time that we don't get more games that are single player only, with no service aspects or MTX, but every single time one of them comes out that's ~20 hours, these threads are full of people saying they won't pay more than half price for them, even if it's reviewed well.
Gamers can't place such a low value on what their entertainment is worth per hour and then act surprised or get angry when the market responds and starts pushing out games that prioritize engagement and long term play over deep storytelling and unique content.
-
Looks like I'll be picking this up forsure.
-
Any word on Dualsense usage? Just regular haptics or anything better closer to something like Returnal?
Just wondering because with these 3rd party games I just get whatever is cheaper at the time for Ps5 or Series X, but if Dual Sense is good I'd prefer the PS5 version.
Hopefully this hits the Xmas sale rack after a patch or two, would love to pick it up then (still busy playing other stuff and deciding if it's even worth playing Deathloop after a month of not or trading that in).
-
I'm hearing the 60 FPS mode goes as low as 1080p; hopefully we get a Digital Foundry video to confirm.
-
Insomniac: "Finally a worthy opponent! Our battle will be legendary!"
(And before people come in saying Spidey is better, I'm not denying that, I'm just saying Insomniac finally has a fellow developer that can make a good Marvel game)
ID: hhzgp6wThat's good learning from eachother and pushing eachother to create better products
-
Not a fan of comic books, but after watching a youtube streamer playing this, I actually like it. Looks like a lot of fun.
-
I’ve never understood why people were so convinced this game would be terrible. I get that the avengers game was bad but this was never going to be a multiplayer game.
-
Since Dying Light has been pushed to 2022 I'll need something to play over the winter.
Will definitely snag this after I finish FC6 and Kena.
-
looks like I'm getting this one asap
-
Too much space

Good Black Friday game

To further expand on this TL;DW
8/10 like he said. Consensus is:
Fun Single Player campaign Linear gameplay Great dialogue between characters Play as star lord and choose your own responses to conversations which can affect mission strategy Roughly 18 hour game time Polished design
