I did some tests on the performance impact of using AMD Relive to record gameplay
2 : Anonymous2021/10/28 05:04 ID: hicg8o1

Across the games I tested - I also saw 1-2fps lower perf with relive ON. It's really well worth and I recorded in 4K 60FPS HEVC with 100mbit and 320bit audio. So almost max settings. (6700XT was used)

ID: hig1jhy

Damn almostn 1-2fs could be cosndiere d margkn of error

ID: hig1q0j

Yeah, I've never noticed any performance hit from it. So I have it on all the time in games.

I just wish AMD would add Relive ON or OFF as part of a game profile. For ex. in CSGO I want to have it ON but in most games I don't.

I wish AMD enabled ReLive on APUs. Doesn't make sense why much less capable cpus have relive support but my 5600g doesn't.

ID: hibz8hd

same, I can't even use AMD link without relive on my 3400g

ID: hidabm4

my old terrible A6-6310 laptop supported relive, isn't that an APU?

ID: hidzm26

For some reason, laptop processors have relive support but desktop apus do not.

ID: hidyqzk

Use NimeZ drivers

ID: hidb3f2

I have a 3400G with Relive enabled. I didn't do anything to enable it, just using Windows 11.

ID: hidcbuo

Could be to do with lack of video encoders? I know you can't use Shadowplay on GT cards (not GTX) because of such a thing.

ID: hidyt4u

Nope, just an arbitrary software decision.

I will give it a try, thanks. I personally use third party apps or windows game bar to record gameplay now, but it's cool to see these community drivers.

4 : Anonymous2021/10/27 22:36 ID: hib3bw3

so arguably within margins of error.

ID: hib660b

basically yes, which was surprising to me.

a look online shows that a few years ago it was a bigger impact, so i guess newer drivers improved performance

ID: hibuhz2

even when it first launched.. the general consensus from reviewers was that it was within margins of error, reviewers were saying it was barely measurably better than shadowplay.

5 : Anonymous2021/10/28 08:59 ID: hicy2ou

I thought this was widely known?

AMDs HEVC encoder has gotten pretty good on the newer cards. They need to work on the AVC (H.264) tho because the quality/bit rate ratio is still bad (compared to x264, NVENC and QSV)

ID: hid4ap5

Or, we could actually get Twitch to move onto HEVC aswell. Would pay off for them too since they can keep bandwidths lower. Especially since they already use HLS to distribute the stream which can work with OBS and h265/hevc perfectly.

And their hardware also does work with h265 already. Aswell as amazon also having huge capacities for h265/h264 conversions and stuff

ID: hid9nqq

They never will. H265 is licensed and not all browsers support it yet. People also need to install the codec which costs money, unless you spend time googeling for a free link or shady installer. In contrast to always having it just work on all devices, basically for free.

You could say it's up to the streamer to decide then, but who would want to alienate their audience for not having H265? Who would willingly limit their audience?

ID: hidq33p

HEVC is a patent-encumbered mess.

ID: hid7zok

Or that. And twitch is already working on VP9 with specialized hardware

What I've noticed is the better the gpu the better Relive recording is. On my Vega 56 my 4K recording was stuttering but on my 6900Xt it's almost perfect.

ID: hicqdo3

Perfect on my Vega 64 as well. 4K 60 100 mbit HEVC. Now if only they could let us do HDR recordings. Just this one thing.

7 : Anonymous2021/10/27 22:24 ID: hib1pwk

higher res available here

8 : Anonymous2021/10/28 11:43 ID: hidaxo5

ReLive's best feature in comparison to Shadowplay is that it allows the replay buffer to be stored on the RAM. Thus you don't have to worry about degrading your SSD and similar.

9 : Anonymous2021/10/28 10:54 ID: hid6ilc

Its fucking great but alas there always will be fuckers who will be like: BuT It DRoPs tHE fPs bY 1.5

10 : Anonymous2021/10/28 05:20 ID: hichoef

ReLive recording is really good with HEVC. Has been for a long time.

The lacking aspect is more at streaming settings that Twitch & YT enforce.

ID: hid3xzu

Youtube actually does support h265/hevc over hls, as does OBS:

?hl=en" class="reddit-press-link" target="_blank" rel="noopener">https://support.google.com/youtube/answe?hl=en

But everytime you search for h265 streaming on obs, all results are old and outdated and just tell you it either doesn't work. Or will never work because of licensing costs (which you already paid tho when you have a gpu but they somehow always ignore that)

ID: hidhxel

How is the stream quality and performance hit at 1440p? YouTube transcodes all video you send it, so unless you're a large streamer, you get their avc1 codec for 1080p60 and lower which looks like absolute garbage. You need 1440p or higher to get their VP9 codec.

11 : Anonymous2021/10/28 07:28 ID: hicrruy

This video I did a few years back is also of the "Testing Radeon ReLive and gaming performance".

12 : Anonymous2021/10/28 05:29 ID: hicig2h

I loved relive used it alot... but newest drivers have made all relive recordings just go full blackscreen recordings... +no audio its not working anymore sadly... looks like I wont be doing any cool Battlefield clips...

ID: hicp68h

If you tried with the 2042 Open Beta, that's because it was blocked by DRM. (Just thought it was worth mentioning, highly likely you're on Battlefield V and just experiencing a bug)

ID: hidb3fy

nah, tried to record other games, and desktop aswell

13 : Anonymous2021/10/28 07:36 ID: hicscpr

Nice work buddy!

14 : Anonymous2021/10/28 10:31 ID: hid4nm6

What about the quality?

15 : Anonymous2021/10/28 11:51 ID: hidbqq8

Short question.

Is there any was to compress Relive better ? I takes so much space and i didnt even max out settings. Was recording class 1h and it was 13gb my old rig with nvdia shadowplay could do it under 5 easily since its just mostly still images.

When i change from avc zu hvac i only get black screens from my recordings :/

16 : Anonymous2021/10/28 12:48 ID: hidhr3f

In my experience with my old R9 390X, doing GPU-based recording/encoding with something like OBS produced smooth results without much impact to framerate, but it caused some very noticeable input delay. I don't know when I'll be able to buy a newer GPU, but does ReLive do any better with that kind of thing? Input delay is the worst.

17 : Anonymous2021/10/28 14:11 ID: hidsgxs

That's 1080p though.

18 : Anonymous2021/10/28 15:29 ID: hie3pkc

Too bad i get driver crashes now on my R9

19 : Anonymous2021/10/28 19:51 ID: hif7umm

GPU: 0% .. wow nice, a game that runs entirely on the cpu just like the classic game called Outcast and it's vector based graphics. Nice. But yes, GPU recording is the way to do it these days. They (AMD and Nvidia) finally cought up to performance/quality compared to say Fraps which was awesome quality.
