Pondering about upgrading (7700k to 5800x)

Helloo guys I'm new here and I have a little question for my fellow PC enthusiasts (more of a discussion tbh)

Anyway this is my case: I recently bought a Ryzen 7 5800x to switch from an Intel core i 7 7700k (pinned at 5.0 GHz), i had to buy a new Mobo and everything, i just get to keep the ram and other few core components. So I was wondering being that I mostly target 1440p gaming at 180hz is it a "good" or "worth" upgrade ? I ultimately decided to buy this new cpu because there was a huge discount (i paid 360€ for it) so even if it is not the greatest upgrade in terms of performance, would it still bee a good idea to upgrade solely based on the fact that it was discounted?

Am I getting a good deal boys?

Let me know what you think sincerely, i would really like to start a little chat on the topic (even because I can still return the CPU i I think that that's the smart choice hahahah)

See you in the comments 😉

I went from 7700k to 5800x, difference is significant imo. 🙂

What mhz ram is that

3200 mhz i am running a 1080ti btw

i went from a 7700 (non-k) to a 5800X... it was uuuuge! Double the cores/threads and much better IPC make it a substantial upgrade. Enjoy!

Solid upgrade, no questions asked. The only thing I'd consider asking in that scenario is what kinda speed your current ram is at. In a ideal scenario you'd want something like 3200MHz or 3600 MHz, CL16 is fine.

Thanks mate, how about the price, do you think it's good too? 😉

It’s a big upgrade provided you have a GPU that can actually use all that extra power

I'm running a 1080 ti fully overclocked with custom cooling

Hmmm I don’t think you will see much of a difference but I could be wrong

I'd have waited for the new 3D cache CPUs coming in 2-3 months myself, but it is still a huge upgrade in true CPU performance

However, your 1080 Ti will be struggling substantially to provide 180 FPS at 1440p, unless you mostly play competitive games like R6: Siege. And then those games will have no problem getting 150+ CPU-FPS on a 7700k.

You're going to be GPU-limited in any game which is remotely modern and pretty, so you're going to see little/no improvement for gaming in modern titles.

A 1080 Ti is roughly the same performance as an RTX 3060, or in the middle of an RX 6600 and 6600XT to put it in up-to-date terms.

Massive upgrade for productivity though.

I'd have waited a little more. 5GHz 7700K is still good for a 1080 Ti, the games it can run at 180fps 1440p are mostly the same the i7 can handle too.

Appreciate your feedback thank you 🙂

I have a 5800X with a 3090 and it's great. I have a 3440x1440, 180 Hz monitor but most of the modern games I play have me between 90 and 140 FPS. I'm guessing you'll get around 100 FPS in most modern games at 2560x1440 with a 1080 ti

It's newer games that utilize more than 8 threads where you will see the biggest upgrade from the CPU, for example if you try to play Battlefield 2042, the performance is brutal on 4 core 8 thread CPUs, it's decent on 12 thread and pretty good on 8 core 16 thread CPUs and higher.

On older games that only use like 2-4 threads, performance will be somewhat similar between the 7700k and the 5800x at 1440p.

It's the price man, it was too tempting, maby i could benchmark it to see if I can appreciate the difference, an send it back if I don't like it hahahah

I'd get 12600K instead.

If you upgrade to an AMD CPU you should eventually upgrade to an AMD GPU. They work better together.
