TIL Subnautica has a story.
ID: holqslhThe first one has a great story.
The second one (which is where this writer worked) is bad. It’s so bad that the company threw away the first script when the game was close to the release date and started the story from scratch. The game was only released more than a year after the promised date, and the story is still bad.
ID: holtnimThat'd probably explain why I haven't heard anything from the second game. I own the first and haven't played it yet, but the 2nd is on gamepass and i'll just save my money lol

I wish them well (...and hope their writing for ND is better than Subnautica: Below Zero, which had pretty weak writing).
One of the point is a headscratcher, about the big brutish black guy fight. It was just an enemy class, not tied with that race or gender. You fight a identical type of enemy earlier on, and it was a white woman.
Yeahhhh, that was the point where she lost me. Feels like quite the stretch. She says the big buff black dude was different because he was portrayed more like a monster yet I would heavily argue the gang of white people who ambush Abby and take her as a slave was more 'evil.' And like you mention, there's other white brutes earlier in the game. So like, according to her, can we not have big buff black dudes portrayed as villains in video games? How is that a stereotype? Wouldn't it be more racist not to do it?
God damn that was a joke of a read.
Oof that was the empty virtue-signaling of someone who sacrifices nuance and narrative literacy for some clicks
I (by mistake) went to resetera and found this article, the response are all baffling filled with yes-men. This article makes no sense. Instead i think ND did justice to these black characters. I absolutely loved the story of sam and henry and they are two of my most memorable characters of part 1. They felt like real humans going through tragic events…like many other people of any ethnicity in this series. Nothing stereotypical about them.
I couldnt have even imagined someone would make a controversy out of this. Everyone in this series suffers one way or the other. Spoilers but Joel was murdered brutally, there are white characters that were killed off screen, there was literally a guy named jordan in abbys group who was stabbed in the neck on the screen and died and was never remembered, Atleast nora had to an extent a likeable personality, jordan was just a pure unlikeable ahole….how come noone made a controversy about that, i guess we switch the ethnicities then this writer would end up writing an article about it. Idk why she had to single out “people of colour” getting brutally killed and not being remembered when half of the characters (black, white etc etc) have the same fate.
aww shit
This has got to be a joke, right? Right? D:
That was pretty bad. Anyone can find a narrative in anything now a days if they try hard enough. The sad part is they do it because there's a small vocal minority that praise this nonsense.
Tbh she has a point. How black characters in ND games were handled has always bothered me.
Tbh i play game and never look at race, gender, etc, but constantly look at gameplay and story.
Zaire is 100% correct in this. Naughty Dog has always treated racial minorities more superficially than their white characters.
Like Nadine on Lost Legacy?
Its a game dude. Why do you see agenda everywhere? Can you just play and enjoy?
And that makes me bummed as Below Zero wasn't great at all.....the writing was pretty bad in my op the characters just didn't mesh
Agreed. Below zero was considerably weaker than the first one story-wise.
I mean the game itself looked and played good just the story killed it....
Why? This game had 4 writers, she was one of them. We don't know what part she was in charge of. Figure her being added to this team if anything just brings more diversity to the staff. Give a different perspective when writing out some of the characters. Naughty Dog is top in their field also so it's not like they're scrounging for any and anyone available. They chose her for a reason.
I am not going to be positive about this because I have no idea what she'll bring to the table, but I am also not going to be negative about it either.
Sounds familiar for naughty dog
Don’t think we need a post on here every time a studio hires somebody lol
Nathan Drake finds Atlantis confirmed
That's a big step up. I hope she delivers. But the story and lore in Subnautica Below Zero left me rather unimpressed TBH. The main selling point of that game is really the exploration and crafting.
I am sure ND has rigorous process of selecting these writers. So i will trust the process but her article about ND games are not a great indicator of her talent.
It really sucks that she's getting racist DMs and everything, but after reading her article about TLOU2, I'm not gonna lie, that's kinda worrying. Especially considering I think Neil Drunkmann's writing is some of the best in the industry and adds a ton of subtly that you just don't see in video games.
It also doesn’t mean the point are invalid. I remember reading a similar article by someone else who goes into the history of black portrayal in media. The issue isn’t that the writing isn’t good, it’s that the writer might overlook something they are less familiar with, hence why you have diverse people in the room (who can point it out)
I don't think generally video games have 'writing rooms' though like traditional tv shows. Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure it's usually just one or two people who are dedicated to the writing aspect of a game. I'm also pretty sure there are jobs out there that writers can outsource to see if they're script doesn't cross too heavily into stereotypes. But that's more of a overviewer, not a writer.
While I don’t agree with this one article of hers right here, I do find myself agreeing with your point. It’ll only be a better story if it’s thought through from and informed by many angles
That's such a great take, do you remember the name of the article ? I may give it a read.
Subnautica has a story?
Congrats to her! I know some have mentioned her work hasn't been spectacular( i never played subnautica) but at the end of the day she went through the interview process (don't know what it entails but probably rigorous considering its naughtydog) so she did meet whatever bar that was set. Yes she could be a failure too because not every employee at any company will be excellent - thats why people gets fired or they leave.
This will be a new chapter in her career and she will be the one to make it or break it - her previous works should have no bearing on her future contributions besides lessons learned.
I'm confused. So she got a new job and wrote for Subnautica? Am I missing something here? Is this Facebook? are we supposed to know who she is? Usually, these front-page dev studio job posts tend to be for superstars that put in decades of work, but why should we care about a Subnautica writer? What am I missing here?
Ok
That’s cool!
is this supposed to be significant?
Ok?
Kul
Given how bad TLOU2 story was I'm not surprised.
It is a double win for ND, not only did they get a new writer. They can also virtue signal about how diverse the writing team is.
What was there to write about in subnautica? It is just an underwater minecraft.
From Subnautica to one of the worst companies in terms of crunch at Playstation Studios...
idk
Bro her article on nora, fuck that was well written, really happy to see that despite the racial shit she had to deal with she still somehow rose above. Inspirational
Why are you being downvoted? This seems like a reasonable comment.
Dunno, but im guessing it has to do with people not liking who she is and the content she has put out. I just respect that shes taken an immense risk putting herself out there like this.

I want another Nathan drake uncharted because I love the uncharted gameplay but the reason I love the series so much is for the story of Nathan.
Haven’t tried that game yet, but her work must be pretty good for her to land a job at Naughty Dog. Congratulations are definitely in order!
Typical diversity hire lmao.

For sure, gaming news definitely does not belong on a gaming sub
What does this have to do with the PS5? Take it to /
.Is he replacing Druckmann?? Please?
Why do video games even need writers lol im just gonna skip their multimillion dollar cut scene
Go back to playing pong then.
Pong is unironically a superior video game to Last Of Us
Yikes.
Good, Naughty Dog need new writers.
