- Days Gone Director Pitched Open World Resistance; Wasn’t Interested in Syphon Filter Reboot
-
They said a lot on that podcast.
- Bend was not forced to do anything Uncharted/TLOU related as the Bloomberg article said.
- As Bend grew from their tiny 30 dev team to a AAA studio with 100+ people needed for the development of Days Gone, quite a bit of tension grew between the original members and the new talent coming in.
- The creative leads for Days Gone did not see eye to eye with some folks at upper management at their own studio.
- Bend itself (management), did not push Days Gone 2 to Sony, Ross was not aiming the tweet at SIE itself, but at Sony Bend Management and Producers.ID: hrkzp5aID: hrohgv6His tweet literally says “local studio management always made us feel like it was a big disappointment”
.
ID: hrl058tYeah it is kind of funny looking back at all the comments from last night about the tweet after he specified it today. He never intended it to be taken that way and to blow up like it did. It seems his issue is more with management at Bend than anything else but still loved working for Sony and same with John Garvin.
And they seem to fully understand why there is no sequel and that the game had big issues at launch.
ID: hrlod9lTo add, Jeff also said former Sony boss, Shawn Layden, and Connie Booth, Senior Vice President of SIE Internal Production, were very supportive of the game before and after launch. But after Shawn left, Days Gone sequel was "DOA" due to Bend's local management unwilling to pitch it to new Sony executives.
ID: hro5rrbShawn Layden was a real one.
ID: hrlhh4gHis tweet already did enough “damage” and he should’ve specified it earlier. Everyone thinks Sony management went to them and started shit talking in their face
ID: hrllyxdYup it's too late everyone's already made up their mind, and even if he made a tweet to specify I bet it would get way less attention
ID: hrls0wgI mean the tweet itself says "local management" and not "sony". People were just looking for controversy

Don’t tease me with a new Resistance! Don’t give me hope!
ID: hrmbuhwinsomniac posts resistance screen shots on their social media accounts pretty much every week. theres no way thats for nothing
ID: hrn8nunThey just like to post old stuff. Not saying it’s impossible but these posts I do believe are just for fun
ID: hrnh662They've been doing that forever. People really need to pump the brakes and realize not everything is some grandiose stealth tease.
ID: hro053lResistance two multi-player spent so many hours leveling every class to max.
ID: hrm3q6iResistance 1 and 2 was pure action.
Resistance 3 was horror action, one of those games you didn't expect was a horror game. We need a new Resistance whether horror or action, SONY needs an FPS franchise again maybe even PSVR2 enabled like RE7.
ID: hrmddkvResistance 1 and 2 were absolutely horror-action, what are you talking about. The invisible things that shook the earth when they ran scared the living shit out of me as a child, I had nightmares about them.
ID: hrn9argAs a kid who used to think I was a big boy playing Resistance 1 and 2 they definitely had a ton of horror elements. The first game is one of the bleakest and creepiest looking first-person shooters I can think of. The level when you make your way through the underground bunker is oozing with horror.
Then in the second game pretty much all of the gameplay when you're making your way through abandoned buildings being ambushed by hordes of grims is textbook zombie apocalypse stuff. There is an entire section when you make your way through a hotel fighting them off and the whole time you're in complete darkness besides your torch. Plus there's that mission when you're making your way through the forest and the invisible chameleon enemies are leaping out of nowhere and picking off your team.
I don't know how you made it through the first two games and didn't pick up on the horror atmosphere. The entire series has always been a mesh between sci-fi alien invasion and apocalyptic horror. The third game just made everything more cinematic.
ID: hrnnuvdWhile SOCOM is chilling in Davy Jones locker....
ID: hrmhx0oI mean, if you look at insomniacs Facebook they have been posting a lot of resistance pics lately. I feel like they are trying to drop hints.

What a moron.
MGS is done and Splinter Cell has been doing fuck all nothing for 10 years.
Know the market Daryl...

Why publicly air your dirty laundry when the basis for your tweet isn't using actual sales data from Sony but instead using gamstat?
This entire thing is a mess.
ID: hrlepx4From listening to some interviews from Mr. Ross and Garvin, neither of them are the brightest tools in the shed. lol
ID: hrlgcsbYeah, one of Garvin's comments from last year when this whole thing started.
“I do have an opinion on something that your audience may find of interest, and it might piss some of them off. If you love a game, buy it at f****** full price.”
“I’m just saying, you don’t, but don’t complain if a game doesn’t get a sequel if it wasn’t supported at launch,”
“So I think the uptick in engagement with the game is not as important as, did you buy the game at full price? Because if you did, then that’s supporting the developers directly.”
Like I can understand the feeling, but this is not something you just say like that.
At least he was humble enough to admit that the reason that he was fired though was his behaviour to the devs.
“And when it was just Chris [Reese] and I in a very small studio, that kind of heatedness was fine, but by the time you get to a 100-person studio you can’t have one of the directors losing their temper, you know. And I’m not a great people person anyway, and it’s not like they didn’t try, I was put through training a couple of times, like ‘hey, here’s how you go out to lunch with people more, and be a better director’, and dude, I just kinda sucked at all that.”
ID: hrlzyfsPersonally I think hearing real stories from devs is interesting. It’s up to them if they want to divulge or not - we barely get any real news, as most of time it’s all anonymous. And Sony will be fine.
ID: hrnnyqhHearing stories is all well and good but by now everyone should know nuanced discussion and a single tweet doesn't go hand in hand.
This was a completely avoidable mess, and so it does come across as starting shit but then immediately backtracking because things have gone awry.

How can you not be interested in a new Syphon Filter? So much potential
ID: hrrf6x4For real. The original trilogy were some of the best PS1 games, all three were rock solid action games with fun missions to replay. They were kinda ugly and janky but it’s so easy to look past it when the games are so fun.

Aren't bend confirmed to be working on new ip?
ID: hrkxeegThey are yes
ID: hrlwje5Yes, a new open world IP.
-
GIVE ME A NEW RESISTANCE GAME ALREADY UGH
-
[deleted]
ID: hrm34skJust give me a remastered Resistance Trilogy on Ps5 with 60fps etc. I would eat it up
ID: hrn4nxnAnd MP! What fun the MP was!

The whole Bend situation was just a mess of Days Gone not being received well, the devs not wanting to follow the Bend creative management due to them not being nice to work with and Sony not being happy with Bend management either.
Either way, it looks like Bend is in a better place now that Ross and Garvin are gone, wish it worked out well for them but they needed to make concessions which they weren't willing to do.
But with all these tweets and stuff by Ross it just looks like he is salty that he got kicked out of his studio by both the devs and Sony. At least Garvin was humble enough to state that he did have problems to the point that Sony offered him training and help, even though it didn't work out requiring him to be let go.
Edit: Ross also said that the sale numbers are based on gamstat (a website that uses trophy data to estimate sale figures) with PC numbers coming from SteamSpy, he never had access to actual sale data, so that does throw the 8 million number into question.

How good was the Resistance games? Never got around to play them, but have heard good things in later years. A remaster or reboot for PS5 would be interesting.
ID: hrmdsleThe first one was the best for its replayability. The weapons, enemies and environments were unique. Three second one took said weapon wheel away but was still fun. The third one, like one of the comments mentioned here, a horror game disguised as an FPS.
There's some great lore and it really had potential to be as big as something like mass effect. Personally, I'd buy (or atleast put in much effort into buying) a PS5 if they brought it back. It's been ten years and i still miss it.

Ehhh not super interested in more Resistance games if Insomniac isn’t involved. Maybe if Days Gone had been a slam dunk then sure I guess.

Damn. I would LOVE a Siphon Filter Reboot.
ID: hrl1o2s+1 for a reboot. We are severely lacking espionage games. And stealth ninja games too.
ID: hrl6ozzI'm pretty sure it was the first game, but the museum level where you have to make it through undetected was the most stressful yet rewarding thing I did on PS1
ID: hrln8htAs long as you can still light people on fire with a taser.
ID: hrn5lxhThis is literally the only game I want for ps5. I LOVED the multiplayer.
ID: hrno9gjI want a Siphon Filter Reboot and a Sly Cooper Reboot

I was waiting for some clickbait articles to pop up about this Jaffe interview I am watching (that is still going by the way).
It didn't sound like it was a serious pitch, and more of one suggestion that came up in a meeting when thinking about what to do next but nothing really serious or weight behind it. More of just a possible idea they threw out there.
I expect dozens of articles will be posted from this interview being hyper focused one sentence out of context just like that tweet was from yesterday which many misunderstood.

I loved resistance, will take that any day though they'll have to do alot to make it different than what's out there currently. Would like if they made it a linear open world type of game, I say linear because it has the potential to be really similar to Metro Exodus which I was really disappointed with as someone that liked the more linear older Metro games. I think I just like all my FPS games to be linear tbh, can't recall the last open world FPS game I've liked though there aren't many.

Resistance 2 online 30v30 was too good. No other FPS game scratched that itch since then.
ID: hrng4s7Agreed

Man I would kill for a new resistance game with today's technology

Interesting, it made it seem as if Sony turned them away...but it was the execs at their own studio.
