Gran Turismo 7 Has A Ray-Tracing Mode In Addition To A 60 FPS Mode

This is new, I think previous reports stated that ray-tracing is only enabled outside of actual races. Very nice!

ID: hvagmqq

It appears to be a newly developed mode we haven’t seen yet. The previous trailers did not have raytracing during races.

ID: hvajnav

Probably during this state of play today we will see smt.

ID: hvan0qb

If I'm not mistaken, all of the video footage that has been released so far was 60fps. So that would explain why.

ID: hv9umb4

I heard it was only scapes. I’m glad it has changed.

I wouldn't mind a performanceRT solution like insomniac does, even thought it's not at 4K.

ID: hv9y5zb

Everything should have a performance RT mode.

ID: hva0r0u

I agree 1000%

I played through Miles Morales in 60RT mode. IMO it looked as good as 4K, had the benefits of RT and 60fps is so smooth. I consider 60 over 30 to be one of the biggest "graphical" upgrades.

ID: hvac1du

Yo momma should have performance RT

ID: hva2z97

Indeed. Best of both worlds. Blessed be Insomniac!

ID: hva4bpg

The 120hz 40fps mode should be made more popular too. It's revolutionary

ID: hva4n75

Yea it very much is. After playing R&C I hope this is the future forever. Obviously it won't be until cheaper TVs get a 120hz and the majority of them but it will eventually get there so I think 30fps will eventually be gone forever in the future.

ID: hvaaihx

What is 120hz 40fps? I don't get it.

ID: hva60gh

While that might be possible on this game, it's a bad idea to expect that for every game. What insomniac did was magic, and it was a lot more than simply reducing resolution.

Being on a game that spent most of its development last gen did help as a basis though. By the end of this year, we'll start seeing less games with 60fps options at all, since games coming out by then will have spent most of their dev cycle on current gen tools, rather than just taking last gen tech and bumping it up a notch later in development. When developers of those games will want to impress graphically, they'll be using the full 33ms frame time on both the GPU and CPU, making full use of what the system is capable of at 30fps, and also meaning a resolution decrease wouldn't improve performance at all, RT or not. As it has always been every single generation, 30fps is a creative choice, not a technical limitation.

ID: hva4hlr

Agreed. And even if it’s only 40fps like Rift Apart is in fidelity mode, it would still be great.

4 : Anonymous2022/02/02 14:35 ID: hva33dp

I think I’d prefer a smooth 60 fps over RT honestly but I’m glad there’s an option

ID: hvaeuhn

I'm playing Spiderman and it can do RT and 60 FPS at the same time. You can have both if devs puts an effort.

ID: hvb1ot7

to be fair, it’s probably a lot of effort

ID: hvb5ijk

“Puts an effort”

God yes we all know technical limitations is ALWAYS the result of dev laziness /s

ID: hvbbjvs

At 1080p if I’m not mistaken, not 4k.

5 : Anonymous2022/02/02 13:33 ID: hv9uq5m

Last we heard ray tracing was only in the photo mode. Be interesting if they’ve got it working with a decent frame rate and resolution for actual racing. Cube maps etc can be done so well these days, I’m not sure it would be worth the performance hit.

ID: hva18q7

I bet it's 30fps with RT

ID: hva1x2m

Ya. Ray traced lighting and reflections look awesome but there’s just too big of a cost in performance. 60fps is the sweet spot.

I wonder if replays will be locked to 30 fps with ray tracing on.

ID: hva6okh

It could be 60fps with ray tracing, like Spiderman, at around 1440p upscaled.

ID: hva6ida

No one wants to play a racing game at 30fps, I don't care how good it looks.

ID: hva6srs

For cinematics that makes sense but for gameplay? In a racing sim? I'd hope they go for 1080p60fps with RT instead of 4K30fps.

ID: hvad771

Marvel's Spider-man remastered and Miles Morales support performance RT mode. Don't know why other studious aren't taking their time with optimization like Insomniac does.

6 : Anonymous2022/02/02 14:19 ID: hva0vwy

I like to play in 3rd person. Does this mean all the cars will have reflections when riding in the sun? That would be awesome!

ID: hvakgcs

This is what i wanted to see in this game, the 3rd person camera, they only showed us first person, i want to see the details of the car you are driving, although i keep using both cameras depending on which car i use.

7 : Anonymous2022/02/02 15:29 ID: hvab7ys

The game is the reason I bought a PS5. Can't wait.

ID: hvan96a

Same, the wait has been excruciating since the only other games I’ve played are 2K21, Hot Wheels, Spider Man, and Demon’s Souls despite having the system since launch

ID: hvblr8c

What did you think of Hot Wheels? I’ve been on the fence since it released but it seems really fun

ID: hvbcws3

this and elden ring for me!

8 : Anonymous2022/02/02 13:47 ID: hv9wire

Gotta love having choices

9 : Anonymous2022/02/02 15:47 ID: hvae2p2

There is an irony to driving games when it comes to realistic graphics. You want to spend time admiring everything you see, but you only get to truly soak it in during replay mode, not so much while playing it (at least for me).

ID: hvafh91

yea it would be cool if you could enable the raytracing in replay only and back to 60fps when racing.

10 : Anonymous2022/02/02 13:30 ID: hv9ubza

Surely that RT mode isn’t capped at 30fps? Playing racing games at 30fps is really jarring.

ID: hv9xhbz

Hopefully there's a performance mode with upscaled 4K and RT. 1440p is more than enough.

ID: hv9xqhh

I think Miles Morales and Rift Apart had RT Performance modes if i’m not mistaken. So that could be an option.

ID: hva12ie

I hope more devs include a 45fps mode, it feels like a good middle ground

ID: hva39ay

Imho Driveclub still plays wonderfully, even though I'm big on 60 fps. When done right, it can work really well (i.e. perfect frame pacing).

11 : Anonymous2022/02/02 13:53 ID: hv9xcau

I would definitely rather a 120hz mode RT is nice but you won’t really notice it while racing.

ID: hva1hxs

Digital Foundry did a video on the game a while back and said the devs are interesting in doing a 120hz patch after the game is released. So like 1080p at 120hz

ID: hva3cjh

That seems like it would be the best way to play with VR

ID: hva61ot

Hopefully they add it. f1 2021 can run 120hz at 1440p and I have never experienced a racing game like it. it’s actually amazing that the PS5 can even run at those settings.

12 : Anonymous2022/02/02 14:59 ID: hva6oa9

I don't see the point of a 30fps Ray Tracing mode in a racing sim. Maybe for playback but not for gameplay.

I wonder what resolution the game is running at. If this is a 4K30fps RT mode I would be curious if a 1080p60fps RT mode would be feasable, maybe even dynamic 1440p.

That would make much more sense imo:

Resolution mode: 4K60fps

Framerate mode: 1080p120fps

RT mode: 1080p60fps

13 : Anonymous2022/02/02 15:32 ID: hvabnmk

Dunno what to think about this... I'm sure when the game was first announced, before they said it'll also be released on ps4, that it would be 60fps, ray tracing and 4k... on the playstation site?

14 : Anonymous2022/02/02 14:51 ID: hva5h31

I'd be ok with 1080p 60fps RT enabled

15 : Anonymous2022/02/02 13:58 ID: hv9y0me

Do we know if it will have that 120hz 40fps mode Rift Apart had?

16 : Anonymous2022/02/02 17:58 ID: hvazl3m

Imagine ray tracing with 60 fps.. which I thought this generation was doing lol
