- Unveiling Gran Turismo Sophy : An AI Breakthrough
-
Coming to GT7 in a future update
This week Nature's cover
ID: hw8vg8wID: hw8wdxwDude that Nature cover is so cool! I attempted to read the paper but didn’t get very far haha
-
This looks extremely promising. Hopefully it will apply to GT7 at some point through an update and is customisable.
ID: hw97770Reminds me of Nintendo's Amiibo in Smash
-
How tf am I gonna win the Sunday Cup now??
-
This was used to beat Gran Turismo racers on GT Sport so hopefully it will make an appearance in GT7 after the AI learns the dynamics and tracks of GT7?
Edit- "Future Applications
While GT Sophy has achieved major milestone, there is still room for further research and development. In partnership with PDI and SIE, Sony AI will continue to upgrade GT Sophy’s capabilities as well as explore ways in which the agent can potentially be integrated into the Gran Turismo series going forward.
In addition to Gran Turismo, Sony AI is also eager to explore new partnerships to enhance the gaming experience for players through AI"

This is scary. That AI battle in the first race was as entertaining as watching two humans race.
Skynet is here. The judgement day is near.
ID: hw94w0hSecond race was even better. This is madness
-
Is it not very odd that they make this big announcement ahead of a huge GT release, only for it not to be included?
ID: hw8ya1hIt will be included in GT7 through future updates, just not at launch
ID: hw901g2Yeah I saw that got announced later, good to hear
ID: hw92jmmIf the marketing is to be believed, this seems like a breakthrough that goes beyond just the scope of GT. It's newsworthy in its own right.
ID: hw8p4j4I don't think this was ever meant to be a "big announcement". It was a random tweet from Sony AI
ID: hw8pxe9that was also tweeted out by Gran Turismo saying it was going to be a "game changing"
ID: hw9gezpIt’s literally on the cover of nature. Lmao
ID: hw8oi34Yeah, kind of a letdown
-
Was the “being added to gt7 in a future update” image added later or something? Why’s everyone saying it won’t be?
-
Sony CarStation 2030?

"Sony AI and PDI will explore how to integrate GT Sophy into future releases of the Gran Turismo series"
Why unveil this before the launch of a new GT if it isn't part of it?
ID: hw8pql2They position it as a breakthrough in AI research, similar to AlphaStar. This is scientific news (hence being featured in Nature), not gaming news, for now.
ID: hw8qzfcI agree that it is great news in AI research, but associating it with GT and announcing it before the launch of a new GT is just going to create a lot of unnecessary (negative) buzz for GT7. I can already see gaming news sites pointing out this new AI will not be in GT7 and how people might assume AI in the game will just be terrible because of it. Seems to me the announcement came at a weird timing, they could've easily waited until after the launch I feel.
ID: hw9kn4bBecause it was developed using GT and GT is in the public spotlight right now. so unveiling it now draws more eyeballs to what would otherwise be a story most people never saw.
Same reason why you probably never heard about mRNA vaccines until covid came around even though they have been working on it for 20+ years.
ID: hw8pbgsWould not be surprised if they implement it into future events in GT7, they already had people racing against the ai

Sophy is the next Deep Blue lol.

I haven't played a GT game since Gran Turismo 3, and my skill level is utter trash with simulation type racing games. I'm more interested in an AI that can learn to realistically drive at different skill levels. I don't want to race an AI that can beat the top level players. I want to race an AI that is a challenge at my shit level, not one that takes perfect lines that I have to beat by using a better car. Is there a setting for me in GT7?
ID: hwa0kd5I agree with this. I ran into the same issue with the AI in Go (the board game). The focus has been entirely on top performance and by now freely available Go software plays better than any human. But for amateur players, there are no realistic opponents. Go AI either plays erratically, randomly, or is unbeatable. Not much fun to play against, unless you are a world class player.
The same seems to happen with game AIs. I can see that coming up with mediocre, but smartly playing AI is quite challenging, though.
ID: hwa9r2nYes youll be fine and youll be able to win races
-
Can’t wait for 7 to be released
-
It's funny how this sub thinks "breakthrough" automatically means "its gonna be in the latest installment"
Newsflash, making an AI that's actually competent and use tactics all the while being able to adapt to different circumstances isn't an easy task and it certainly isn't a short process.
ID: hw93aixBut it will be in GT7 so….
-
They say the new AI is able to outrace the top GT players in the world
Can't any AI beat top players if you crank up the difficulty high enough?
ID: hw8tawxUsually AI "difficulty" is set up through modifiers. Basically, cheating. In racing games, that means usually making their cars much more powerful. If we applied this to chess for example, AI would get automatically a second queen, a third rook or could move two pieces a turn for example.
In the case of GT, they wanted an even playing field, and with the exact same car and specs, the AI had to be trained and do thousands of laps until it learns the optimal line and speed for each turn. At some point, the AI will become more consistent and faster than the best humans at the game.
ID: hw8ybjsYa this is basically a “proof of concept” to show that AI is capable of beating top human drivers.
ID: hwai96dBasically, cheating
In Forza Horizon 5, for example, the AI gets to defy the laws of physics and suddenly have impossible grip and downforce through the turns.
-
Interesting! I remember GT5's AI's being downright trash, sticking to their racing line whether you were there or not,
-
I’ve…never played any of these
-
I hope it’s better implemented than in Forza. Those AI’s just break physics and cheat.
ID: hwaar53It's way more advance
ID: hwahm3gThis is a different type of AI. This is given certain rules and physics and then it has to work it out through trial and error. Real machine learning AI. Almost like a child learning to speak.
The AI we've had in video games is mainly planned routes and lines by the developers with some programmed behaviours, and often elements based on the player (such as trying to stay close to the player to make it more exciting).
-
Hmmm not on gt7 ? strange timing...
ID: hw93becWill be
-
So it’s not being added into GT7 yet? That’s lame, the series desperately needs better AI. The ai in the top 3, when playing GT SPORT, are the only ones that ever present any semblance of a challenge, the rest might as well be traffic cones for you to fly by
ID: hw8qoknIf they were all the same level of AI then you'd be able to expect getting last as often as first if they're truly difficult.
And I'm sure more novice players wouldn't want that.
Isn't the point for them to have a scaling difficulty so "a decent" run would be 3rd because you passed all the meh racers.
ID: hw8uk7wI agree with what you’re saying, but the problem is that the hardest difficulty isn’t hard enough. The only way to lose is to crash, be racing a severely handicapped vehicle, or have to few laps set for the race. I don’t think the ai has ever beaten me by actually being a better racer
I’m not that good at the game, the best I’ve ever gotten in online races is 3rd, but I can reliably beat the hardest difficulty ai without breaking a sweat.
-
Yea, we'll see. Gran Turismo has had by far the worst AI in any sim-type game for a long fucking time now. Blind, slow and stupid.
Devs have proven you can do a whole lot of decent AI behavior and competitiveness without needing ML so far. Not saying it cant be of good use, but for a game like GT, I really am skeptical of how good it's actually gonna be. They're not gonna want to put in genuine world-beating 'perfect' AI either way.
ID: hw9h5u2The AI in Forza Motorsport is far worse than in GT Sport
-
If it's not in the game why announce it. Hardly a breakthrough.
-
This just sounds like Forza’s tech of ghost riders that will have the names of your friends but more fancy. Maybe this tech will be applied to later things but I can’t see anyone thinking this is some huge deal especially since it won’t be in the upcoming GT
-
"Future releases" aka not until PS6 lol since PDs output has been...very slow since the PS3 era
-
This just confirms the ai is gunna be the same dumbass AI it has always been.
Disappointment
-
This confirms literally nothing about GT7
-
It tells us there new fancy AI technology Is not in gt7... And why even announce it at all?
Sounds like damage control for having the same bad AI.
I'm excited but I'm not gunna act like this doesn't raise eyebrows
But your welcome to live in la la land

Neat, you can use it as a driving coach
