Horizon Forbidden West Shows How a Sequel Should Be Done

This is what fascinates me about certain companies and mostly Sony games. HZD was amazing looking for its time and still looks like a new game when it comes to quality.

And now a sequel comes where it becomes even more beautiful. Can't wait to get it, even tho I need to finish couple games before

ID: hxp19d7

yeah the visual upgrade is actually crazy. I was watching a comparison video of HZD vs HFW and the characters look a lot better in the new game, like i dont even remember HZD's characters looking like that. like theyre not ugly but compared to HFW, theyre bad.

ID: hxp6pqt

I have just started playing HZD on PS5 a few days ago, just got to Daytower now, I'm so excited to finish it and hop on to HFW. I didn't have this much enjoyment in gaming in the recent years.

ID: hxpak8i

The under water bits look amazing so far

ID: hxpchud

HZD is honestly proving to be one of my favourite games. And HFW has arrived to positive reviews, no real division between the fanbase and some outstanding graphics and gameplay. Can't wait to pick this up.

ID: hxq4qfj

The visuals are blowing me away. The upgrade in facial animations is out of this world. It honestly looks like real people sometimes.

3 : Anonymous2022/02/20 12:40 ID: hxp45mz

When Ghost of Tsushima came out, I didn’t like the idea of having no animations when picking up resources, but now I wish every game did it, especially in one like Zero Dawn where you do it so much. The game is amazing, regardless.

ID: hxpceee

100% agree. Sure you lose a very slight immersion but that’s not important after the first few times of gathering an item. Ghosts was fun to gather and never got old for me through the whole game. No animation meant it was like a carrot on a stick that helped me explore the map and check out every inch of it. I could grab something quickly while enjoying the atmosphere and keeping a nice flow.

ID: hxpf0f6

I think GoT really helped itself by having that IMMACULATE dust animation was so satisfying to watch every time you picked up something.

ID: hxpc2d9

YES! After playing rdr2 where they have a long drawn out animation for everything, I loved the immediate picking up items

ID: hxpds4p

Yup, this is my only complaint about the game 15 hours in. You need to do so much gathering, it should be more seamless.

ID: hxpelza

Gathering and crafting are the worst part of open world games for me

ID: hxpy6z9

I was honestly surprised there isn’t an accessibility option to turn off gathering animations for HFW. I swear I’ve seen that option in a game before, but can’t remember which game it was. Maybe it was an Assassin’s Creed game?

Either way, it would be a welcome option. At least the gathering animation is pretty fast in HZW, but they should really look into an option to turn it off.

ID: hxpmb81

I remember in early TLOU2 gameplay every pick up was animated but they mentioned in an interview gameplay comes first and now Ellie will reach for something but the pickup is instant. I think that is a good balance.

ID: hxppb54

It was fun crouching by cabinets and grabbing everything left and right.

ID: hxpdxs2

Also pressing R2 is much better than holding triangle.

ID: hxpfrpi

R2 for fast travel is an interesting choice.

ID: hxpidb7

That and the parkour could use some work. Never does what I tell it to do. Already level 30 and can’t stop playing

Melee combat is soooo much better in the sequel love the new skills

ID: hxpkwpy

The melee combat is straight up awesome now! In Zero Dawn it was very clearly a shooter with melee when necessary, and now in Forbidden West I’m doing proper combos, kick-flipping off enemies to get distance to pop off some bow shots, then dashing back in to power attack and resonant blast and woooo

It’s improved the overall combat by a ridiculous amount, having a proper melee system makes the gameplay feel more complete

ID: hxplzqs

Oh that’s good to know, I’ve been ignoring my melee skill tree bc it didn’t seem worth it from how little I used melee in the first one. Gonna start upgrading that and trying melee more now

ID: hxpp6ie

The r1+r2 jump combo is so fun. It’s even better that it boosts bow damage in the kickoff!

5 : Anonymous2022/02/20 13:41 ID: hxpa32y

I will preface this by saying I didn’t read the article.

To me it’s not just about the visuals. The game built on literally everything from the first one. The skill trees are amazing. The crafting/workbench/settlement/stash concept is amazing. The new machines are fantastic.

I’m only about 5 hours in (it’s Mardi Gras and my son wants to go to parades), but I haven’t had a single time where I said, “This was better in HZD.”

ID: hxpe92y

The skills looks awesome. Like im looking at them and thinking, no im not ready for this, lets go for another one.

The side quests are brilliant and I just keep on getting distracted by the graphics. Holy fuck

ID: hxpwus6

Actually surprised by the quality of sidequests. I mean the actuall production. Like 90% of them have actuall meaning and plots that are interesting. And that first area where there are 3 quests that tie into how shitty of a ruler valrud is.

ID: hxpn7n2

It’s crazy how much better the facial animation and cutscenes are in this one. That was one of my biggest complaints of the first and they completely elevated it. It’s pretty damn close to Naughty Dog levels a lot of the time which is crazy for an open world game. The voice acting is way better too. Even minor characters are given personality, quirks, and idiosyncrasies. Side quests loop back to the central story and flesh out the world and lore even more. I just finished up all the content in Chainscrape and can already tell it’s just a massive improvement on the first game. The quality is just so fucking good and I’m not even in the Forbidden West area yet.

ID: hxpo34o

Yes!!! Aloy only had like 2 or 3 expressions in HZD. Five hours in and I’ve seen so many. That little smirk she gives when she sees one of her friends from HZD for the first time was so much better than anything in HZD.

ID: hxpwd2y

One of my biggest issues with HZD was inventory management and they completely fixed it this time around.

6 : Anonymous2022/02/20 15:51 ID: hxpqhjn

They improved on everything from the previous game and refined all the good from the first game. Truly a perfect sequel. My hype for God of war goes through the roof knowing that these devs are not rushing anything and crafting the best product they can deliver.

7 : Anonymous2022/02/20 11:03 ID: hxowk5v

I still find it odd the meta score is lower on this than the original. So far it looks, feels and plays better in every way than the original. Bizarre.

ID: hxp7768

Yeah I find it strange. HZD was probably a high 8 but this feels like a 9.3 or something to me - I am absolutely blown away. Six or seven hours in and I'm captivated by this game, far more so than I was by HZD.

ID: hxowrb3

Some are review bombing it

ID: hxox2wh

why?

ID: hxplmzw

Honestly what good game doesn’t get review bombed these days? It’s almost like a badge of honour

ID: hxppv04

Looking that the insane amount of 0/10 review and how highly they’re being propped up, it’s absolutely a review bomb.

Additionally, this game isn’t GTA, RDR2, or a surprise indie game so a lot of people just like to shit on franchises they don’t personally like. I noticed this with Ghost of Tsushima reviews where it got 0s for being something different.

8 : Anonymous2022/02/20 11:17 ID: hxoxk0r

Absolutely blown away by it so far. I knew it’d be great but this is just such an improvement on every front. GG did an outstanding job. I am about 10 hours in and loving every second of it!!

9 : Anonymous2022/02/20 12:38 ID: hxp3ycd

I’m excited to get this. I like horizon zd but had a few issues that seem like they got fixed. Seeing that the combat was approved is very interesting to me because horizon had probably the best combat in any 2017 game.

10 : Anonymous2022/02/20 14:01 ID: hxpc87h

This was one of my first impressions of the game. It felt like a proper sequel the likes of which we don't see much anymore (outside of Insomniac, who've always done this). It retains what needs to be retained and improves on things that need to be improved and alters what needs to be altered, all while staying true to the original. Most sequels these days either feel like glorified expansion packs that are just more of the same, or they veer so wildly away from the original that they lose something. This game honestly gives me the same feeling I got back in the day going form Super Mario 1 to Super Mario 3.

11 : Anonymous2022/02/20 13:05 ID: hxp6fc4

Been playing this non-stop. What a fantastic well-done game!

12 : Anonymous2022/02/20 13:07 ID: hxp6n77

I bought it yesterday had a couple drinks and started it. I stared at it in awe for about ten minutes and had to turn it off because I was drunk and overwhelmed. Game is absolutely gorgeous and I cannot wait to dive back in later today.

13 : Anonymous2022/02/20 16:47 ID: hxpypvx

Yeah it's a huge step up in every way over the first game. I'm really impressed.

14 : Anonymous2022/02/20 11:32 ID: hxoymdr

Basically everything was improved: combat, machines scan, cutscenes, side quests and open world activities. My only issue is that performance mode on Ps5 looks very bad when looking at foliage, has a lot of aliasing and shimmering

ID: hxp0cn7

Correct me if im wrong but I think it has to do with the reconstruction technique, same thing was and is present in god of war as well

Would just prefer a native 1440p60fps mode instead

ID: hxp1s7p

It may be reconstruction interfering with some sharpening filter they use to make foliage pop more. God of war looked much better

15 : Anonymous2022/02/20 16:02 ID: hxps0ri

Oh my God its out. ITS OUTTTTT! yahoo!!

16 : Anonymous2022/02/20 16:05 ID: hxpsjs2

Ignoring all comments because I haven’t gotteny to play yet but this game is the reason I bought the console, there was no way they were letting this flop when it was in every single ad for the ps5

17 : Anonymous2022/02/20 11:34 ID: hxoyty0

All of the plaudits for the graphics are great (and I agree with them) but the sound scape in this game is amazing, I don’t mean the sound effects I mean the birdsong, the running water, you can even hear the wind blowing through the grass. The soundscape is so immersive it’s top notch. Bad sound is often more jarring than than bad graphics.

18 : Anonymous2022/02/20 16:32 ID: hxpwgbd

It’s glorious. I’m having a blast. Exactly why I bought a PS5 abs I’m not disappointed!

19 : Anonymous2022/02/20 17:43 ID: hxq70ne

I am enjoying the fuck out of this.

I'll be honest though. Going between performance or resolution is really difficult, but 30 fps makes the decision easy. Kind of a shame, but they did what they could.

20 : Anonymous2022/02/20 17:51 ID: hxq870w

It starts a little slow, but once it opens up it feels better than the first one
