PSA: Games that offer free PS5 upgrade versions are not patches, they are wholly separate game versions that need to be installed separately, not a patch for the PS4 version

1 : Anonymous2021/03/07 21:58 ID: m00qgp

PS4 games cannot be patched to add in RT, SSD support and Haptics/Triggers - the only patches the PS4 versions are getting are for performance and frame rate boosts only.

Edit: This tweet from Remedy proves that it is not just a patch that is required for next-gen but a lot of work on the engine which warrants a new UPDATED release and not a simple patch!

Edit 2: Seems like there a few people who are still keeping the PS4 versions installed thinking that they are playing a patched PS4 version on the PS5! You do not need the PS4 version installed to play the PS5 version as it is entirely separate, unless you are playing with friends who only have PS4 versions!

Edit 3: PS4 games DO take a small advantage of the SSD but not as much as a native PS5 games do. Until Sony unlock expanded SSD support it is best to keep the PS5 storage free for native PS5 games and keep PS4 games on an external SSD/HDD

2 : Anonymous2021/03/08 13:53 ID: gq7k34n

I have spoken.

3 : Anonymous2021/03/08 17:07 ID: gq89ovt

if this new information? its been this way since launch had to do it with destiny when they got their update

4 : Anonymous2021/03/08 12:06 ID: gq7a83t

So can I delete the ps4 version of borderlands 3 on my ps5? Bc it downloaded both ps4 and ps5.

ID: gq7aasb

Yep, you can get rid of it 🙂 even if you have friends on PS4 you can play cross-gen with them 🙂

5 : Anonymous2021/03/08 12:10 ID: gq7aki8

Ohh, so I shouldn't predownload my games to an external HDD before getting a PS5, got it. But how do I save single player progress?

ID: gq7b3i2

I have been buying games that I know are getting PS5 upgrades and not installing them on my HDD until I can play the PS5 version!

Some games do allow you to upload your saves to their own channels, such as Ubisoft with Valhalla and Watch Dogs using their Connect service and Gearbox with Borderlands 3 by using the menu option in the PS4 version. You can’t just use your ps cloud saves as they are not compatible.

But with Control ultimate edition you can’t use your PS4 save for the PS5 version as this tweet from Thomas Puha at Remedy states. Not sure why they don’t allow it but it reads like it’s engine related changes

6 : Anonymous2021/03/08 12:49 ID: gq7dpq6

It was confusing on launch day but not now. I dont get how so many people don't understand all of this. The worst thing about the ps5 for me is deleting games and it leaving a blank tile on your homescreen so annoying. I know there is ways around to remove these but they are long winded. I just wanna press options on the tile and delete. Why can't Sony implement this

ID: gq7e2r5

Yeah it’s confusing! People say it’s to do with semantics but it isn’t, I posted this because I see people on here and on Twitter completely misunderstanding, and it’s all down to Sony and also developers for not setting out a consensus on this!

7 : Anonymous2021/03/08 14:52 ID: gq7r4h9

So does this mean that after my ffvii remake ps4 game upgrades to ps5, I can safely delete the ps4 version?

9 : Anonymous2021/03/08 15:30 ID: gq7w4sx

Yeah the issue was that in the storage it didn’t label which was the PS4 and which was the PS5 version - people had to resort to Google which file size was the PS4 version and then deleted that.

They fixed that in a firmware update a while back so now it tells you which is the PS4 version 🙂

10 : Anonymous2021/03/08 19:06 ID: gq8qud5

So I had this issue with Atelier Ryza 2. I got the PS5 upgrade and I had both the PS4 and PS5 version. However, upon deleting the PS4 version I could no longer play the PS5 version at all. Any thoughts?

11 : Anonymous2021/03/08 19:33 ID: gq8uhzf

This shouldn’t happen as the two versions are not connected at all!

Did you have an error code when you tried to play?

Could just be a different error that appeared coincidentally after you deleted the PS4 version?

12 : Anonymous2021/03/08 19:37 ID: gq8v2fv

Ok but how do I go about if I bought a PS4 game then? Should I plug the disc in, install it and then what?

13 : Anonymous2021/03/08 19:41 ID: gq8vmab

Easiest way is to search the PS5 store and if you can upgrade to the PS5 version it will be listed as free.

But not all developers offer free upgrades! Activision charge $10 or something to upgrade and if you have the base version of Control (not the Ultimate Edition) you can’t upgrade to the PS5 version 🙁

Ubisoft, Bethesda, CD Project Red and even EA will offer free upgrades of their existing PS4 games though so it’s not all the developers charging 🙂

15 : Anonymous2021/03/08 21:58 ID: gq9ebxx

Yeah it’s not very user friendly at the moment until Sony finally decide to sort it out - but by that time the gap in the generations will be just passing away and it will be PS5 games only! I reckon that’s about a year or two away from us now

I wish it was like Microsoft’s Smart Delivery system where it automatically downloads the best version for the console you are using! It’s so simple!

16 : Anonymous2021/03/09 01:52 ID: gqa5amh

So I use a PS4 Miles Morales disc to play the game but I have downloaded the PS5 version. Can I delete the PS4 version from the storage and still play the game? I will have the disc in the console to play.

17 : Anonymous2021/03/08 01:23 ID: gq5vhkj

So how the fuck are you actually supposed to be able to tell? Do you have to manually search the store for the PS5 version or will the version in your library automatically recognize it's the PS5 version?

18 : Anonymous2021/03/08 01:30 ID: gq5w8qy

If you have a game that has both a PS4 and a PS5 version you click the 3 dots next to the game in your library you can choose which version you will launch or install

Why Sony chose this method is beyond me... if I have a PS5 version why would I need the PS4 version installed also? Unless I was playing with friends who only have the PS4 version! But Borderlands 3 for example has cross-gen play so I wouldn’t need to!

19 : Anonymous2021/03/08 02:41 ID: gq6407e

Any one have a good list of PS4 games that have a free PS5 upgrade right now?

20 : Anonymous2021/03/08 03:39 ID: gq6a3ox

This is what I can recall from memory:

-Assassin's Creed: Valhalla

-Borderlands 3

Again this is from memory, I'm probably missing some.

Edit: here's a link with the full list

21 : Anonymous2021/03/07 22:32 ID: gq5cdm0

It‘s just semantics bro. No reason to get so triggered.

22 : Anonymous2021/03/07 22:37 ID: gq5cyzh

It’s not semantics though if it’s a new version entirely, It’s an upgrade...saying it is a patch is implying that it is altering the current PS4 version, which it is not.

23 : Anonymous2021/03/08 04:00 ID: gq6c8yv

Could we have a list of all games who offer a ps5 upgrade?

24 : Anonymous2021/03/08 06:44 ID: gq6pza1

Sometimes it might be easier to just fucking google it lmao

25 : Anonymous2021/03/08 09:13 ID: gq6zizj

Almost all are. Only a handful of games like Spiderman, Just Dance, Control (in some circumstances) don't have free upgrades.

26 : Anonymous2021/03/08 09:19 ID: gq6zvo1

The performance patches that boost frame rate and resolution are free though as they are part of the PS4 version

The Spider-Man remaster has ray tracing, use of the triggers/haptics and use of the SSD on PS5 - something that the PS4 cannot, and is not built to, handle. It is also capable of handling it at 60fps too, whereas the PS4 version is locked at 30fps as it most likely cannot handle 60fps without them degrading resolution and graphics, something which would not make some PS4 players happy

That is why it is a separate PS5 version and not just a patch on the PS4

The other gray area is should developers be charging for PS5 versions if people already paid the PS4 version. A lot of work goes into a PS5 version as parts of the engine need re-coding, haptics and triggers also need coding too which is a monumental task especially in the larger games!

Unfortunately it’s a balance between business and keeping fans happy and loyal. The devs want to keep the fans happy but the higher ups are only interested in making money!

27 : Anonymous2021/03/08 08:09 ID: gq6vku6

Yeah me too - take the smart delivery feature on Xbox Series X which automatically detects what console you are using and only downloads the best version!

28 : Anonymous2021/03/08 08:47 ID: gq6xxvw

Yes, all PS5 versions have separate trophy lists

Spider-Man remastered is a PS5 version so that’s why it has its own list - plus a few new ones for the remaster, it isn’t a special case or anything.

The only issue might be with importing saves - some devs have made it work but you have to upload them differently through their channels (Ubisoft and Gearbox and Hello Games to name a few) not through the PS Plus Cloud, but other devs haven’t made it possible (I’m looking at you Remedy for the PS5 version of Control Ultimate Edition!!)

29 : Anonymous2021/03/08 08:52 ID: gq6y9c8

It’s a full PS5 version, because it uses the SSD and triggers/haptics - but oddly enough not Ray Tracing, something that is present in the PS5 version of Watch Dogs Legion!

It runs really well on the PS5, I have sunk at least 100 hours in and no crashes, but a few bugs but that’s to be expected, so once you get a PS5 and upgrade to the PS5 version you’ll be all set.

I haven’t played RDR2 but I know that it’s still stable 30fps and hasn’t received a performance patch like God of War and Ghost of Tsushima etc. However there are plenty of rumours about it getting a PS5 upgrade at some point in the future so if that is the case they probably won’t waste resources adding a performance patch to the PS4 version

30 : Anonymous2021/03/08 20:23 ID: gq91f8r

Days gone and God of war were patches...

31 : Anonymous2021/03/08 20:45 ID: gq94jex

Yes, they are performance patches as I said in the post! All they do is unlock the ability for the game to run in both performance and resolution modes instead of having to compromise, nothing else has changed in the game.

My post is about when a PS5 upgrade is referred to as a patch when it is a whole new version as you cannot just patch the PS5 features into a PS4 game!

All you can do is the performance patches as I mentioned before

32 : Anonymous2021/03/08 10:59 ID: gq75r9s

This isn’t about stating the obvious as clearly looking at the comments people are confused and don’t understand the way it works!

33 : Anonymous2021/03/08 03:02 ID: gq668wc

The PS5 version will have Haptic/Adaptive Trigger feedback as well as the new dynamic default camera. I think it’s called Gamecam. The only other major additions besides those are in the player models and hair.

34 : Anonymous2021/03/08 06:48 ID: gq6q7ke

Well I doubt Fifa can really benefit from a PS5 upgrade other than maybe haptic feedback I guess?

35 : Anonymous2021/03/07 22:02 ID: gq5895e

In the post

the only patches the PS4 versions are getting are for performance and frame rate boosts only.

36 : Anonymous2021/03/07 22:07 ID: gq58yt7

With the unpatched disk version you could still get 4K and 60fps but they took it out with the later patches when they added in photo mode and NG+. It was only recently that they re-enabled it.

I was playing unpatched for a while before but had to start a new save with no ng+ and no photo mode to mess around with...sad times they were!

37 : Anonymous2021/03/08 14:59 ID: gq7s3mn

Warframe PS4 was one of my first downloads, it was painfully slow. Just to see that there was a PS5 version of it. That download again was really slow and then I somehow deleted the PS5 version in the delete dialogue. The dialogue must have asked me to choose which verseion to keep? So I had to download it a third time.

38 : Anonymous2021/03/08 15:33 ID: gq7wgdu

There was an issue before where it wasn’t labelled in the storage which was the PS4 and which was the PS5 version so a lot of people ended up deleting the wrong version!

They fixed it in a firmware update a while back so it now tells you which version is which in the storage, so I always go there if I need to delete the PS4 version of a game!

39 : Anonymous2021/03/08 15:25 ID: gq7vhre

I swear once I deleted the PS4 version of Miles and it deleted the PS5 version off my PS5. This was the first week after launch though, maybe it was a bug

40 : Anonymous2021/03/09 07:33 ID: gqb0cd0

Yep, you can delete the PS4 version and save some space 🙂 but you still need to have the disc in to play!

41 : Anonymous2021/03/09 05:18 ID: gqaqbb9

Here is something I have been wondering and hopefully someone can answer: Can you play the PS5 version of Nioh (remastered) if you got the game from ps plus? Or would you have to buy THAT specific version of the game on the store?

42 : Anonymous2021/03/09 05:20 ID: gqaqj5o

just found the answer on tomsguide: " If you want the remastered version of the original Nioh, though, that’ll set you back a full $50, even if you own the PS4 version"

43 : Anonymous2021/03/08 09:05 ID: gq6z1iy

If only they give free framerate boost patches...

Look at Spider-man PS4 : They do a Remaster, and doesn't patch the PS4 game : Strategy to force you to buy MM IMO

44 : Anonymous2021/03/07 22:13 ID: gq59t9i

OK THEN!

45 : Anonymous2021/03/08 05:04 ID: gq6i7pa

I wish the ps5 automatically up sampled or something, loving Gauntlet but all the text is pretty blurry/crappy

46 : Anonymous2021/03/08 06:59 ID: gq6r0un

And the annoying part is that it will ask you to put in the ps4 disc to play the PS5 version. Then it will try to install the ps4 version. I'm not sure if this has been patched out but that's my current frustration with playing borderlands 3.

47 : Anonymous2021/03/08 08:08 ID: gq6vhzi

I wish the PS5 automatically installs only the PS5 version for available games

48 : Anonymous2021/03/08 08:42 ID: gq6xnye

So, does this mean that they have seperate trophy lists and stuff too? E.g. if you play ff7remake now, then play the ps5 version when it releases, they'll show up as 2 different lists? Likewise for Crash 4 if you were to play it now, then on ps5 in a couple of weeks? I know this is true for Spidy, but that was a remaster (kinda?) So I wasnt sure if that was a special case? I've been wondering about this since they announced the ps5 version of ff7 remake and whether that means I'll need to go through it all over again to earn the platinum again?

49 : Anonymous2021/03/08 08:44 ID: gq6xr0p

Quick question, I have Valhalla for ps4, is what they provide just a patch or a full ps5 version of the game? I haven't looked into what's different between the 2. It's currently unplayable (hard crashes as soon as it loads in, even after initializing ps4, still happens but only with this game) so im hoping I'll be able to play it when I can find a PS5. Oh and semi off topic, has anyone played RDR2/red dead online on ps5 yet? Im looking for opinions on how it runs since I play RDO a lot still.

50 : Anonymous2021/03/08 02:34 ID: gq636tb

Has anyone played Fifa 21 on PS5? I downloaded the game and played a few games before realizing I was playing the PS4 version. I switched to PS5 version and deleted the PS4 version but I see absolutely no difference
