How long do you guys think this buying-out will last?

Was talking to some buddies of mine today about PS5 stock and when we think it'll finally be "casually available" for purchase in stores and not near-instantly selling out. The PS5 released on November 12, 2020 so as of today it's been out almost 3 months. My one buddy suggests we'll see general availability in September. My other friend said we likely won't have it until November 2021.

What are you guys' thoughts?

The key will be if there can be stock in stores before the Christmas buying rush starts. If there isn’t a stable stock by September, there won’t be stock until January.

I thought since November that for sure there would supply by March, but now I’m not so sure. Underestimated the demand.

"online only" is the biggest problem with obtaining a console right now.

There's a huge GPU shortage, the chipmakers are "struggling" to find the resources to make the chips as quickly as they need to meet demand. It's gonna be a while.

You can blame cryptocurrency.

Or you can buy crypto and save up for a ps5.

I’d guess probably summer (6months from launch). GPUs on the other hand...

The GPU shortage is almost hilarious. Pretty sure I can turn a profit on my 2 year old 2070.

I think (or hope) that it will be much earlier than November 2021. The reason for the recent drought of ps5 drops were partly due to the occurence of the Chinese new years where factories in China had stopped for a few weeks. Now that is over and there are no major holidays coming soon (at least in China), also the covid situation is gradually improving, couple with the fact that PS 5 scalping is not as profitable as before, so a number of scalpers will leave the game, all that reasons Im expecting we will be seeing casual stock as soon as late March, April ... really hope that it’s true.

I remember during the beginning of the year when people were saying Feb, due to scalpers returning their units and christmas over with. Ofc it hasn’t played out that way but it could be a lot longer than anticipated

Marketplace has been flooded so scalpers gonna stop 😉

I saw a xbox series x on best buy for over 8 hrs in Canada. The smaller one i realize it is not as sought after as the ps5 but that is promising for other systems I think. I'm hope for mid summer for the ps5 to not sell out in 5 to 10 mins every restock. Crossing my fingers.

I honestly couldn't say when. Part of the problem is, as others have said the chip shortage. Part of the problem also is that the retail sites do not seem to want to do any type of system where users can actually order the darn thing, pay and know that they will get one as it becomes available prior to the stock being turned over to the general public.

I know last fall when Apple came out with the Homepod Mini, Best Buy Canada did basically a reserve back order system that allowed me to get the item fairly quickly, so that says that there is already a back end in place that should let retailers do the same thing with the Playstation 5.

Online does suck :(. If you live in Canada or any place that has EB Games then call EB Games and put your name on their waiting list. I put my name on three different local EB Games stores, also only some have waiting lists so call all nearby EB Games stores and hope that they have waiting lists. If you put ur name on the list they will eventually call u to pick up your PS5 in-store which is what I’m gonna do 😉

I think some of the issue stems from retailers only doing online drops, due to Covid-19. As such, I’d predict they’re hard to find until all major chains open back up, so they can move stock off of online-only and into stores. It’ll be a scalpers market until then. I suspect this will be October-ish. Then comes the Christmas rush, where they will once again be the hot item. You won’t see it “casually” in stores until Feb-2022 is my guess.

Likely by summer you'll be able to get one if your actively searching. That will be your best window. Scalpers will lose interest with it and Come fall the scalpers will be back on it, scalping for Xmas buyers.

The problem is the prices of the components placed in the PS5 which is causing Sony to not produce a lot and an ample rate to beat scalpers! Hopefully by August- September then can ramp up and have stuff ready for pre Holidays (Nov -Dec)

It's not prices, it's sheer availability. There's a chip component shortage.
