Be carefull if you plan to watercool a 6800xt Merc, the GPU have two versions of PCB

1 : Anonymous2021/03/23 10:32 ID: mbbqhl

After 1 month and half waiting my alphacool waterblock, i just cancel it and buy an bykski on aliexpress and the reseller send me a message :

It's at this moment i discover that the PCB had two versions, and it's possible for that Alphacool make so long time to ship the waterblock because they don't know how to deal with this two differents PCB

Personnaly I'm lucky, i had the V1 so the waterblock is compatible, be carefull if you plan to watercool your GPU and you had the V2

EDIT : I find the both version on XFX website, the Merc Black (V1 - Launch date Nov 25,2020) and the Merc Core (V2 - Launch date Jan,2021 ), they are like the same but they are not. The Merc Black have a better game and boost clock speed, you can see a design difference on the backplate

2 : Anonymous2021/03/23 10:44 ID: grwxm6n

looks like they added a lot of extra filtering to reduce the power spikes to the PSU

ID: grwzwe2

And cut the VRM down a bit.

It's weird seeing caps in between the power plugs and VRM instead of core and VRM though.

ID: grx0bpp

that's an LC filter all current AMD cards use to reduce short current spikes to the PSU.

If they removed the caps on the back of the board instead of just adding the extra caps on the front we can see, this is a huge downgrade to voltage regulation.

ID: grxjt4h

simpliest identification seems to be the USB-C Top pic has a USB-C plugged at the bottom part, the bottom pic doesnt?

looks like

top = HDMI, DP,DP, USB-C

bottom: HDMI, DP, DP,DP <- confirmed by this pic of an exploded cooling pic

ID: gry5b15

Yep, got a card anticipating needing to run an HDMI cable for my triple monitors. Got a GPU with 3 DP lol

ID: grya9fn

Not so reliable, an early batch of V1 also had 3 DP and no USB-C.

ID: grya6ih

Spent several minutes looking for the difference, I was expecting the mounting to be different.

3 : Anonymous2021/03/23 12:18 ID: grx5ec7

I don't know enough about the electronics to content but, holy shit did that thing have a lot of mounting holes.

ID: grxfx5p

Correct even in the context of gaming gpus - all of my cards have had a lot less.... 3080FE, Vega 64 strix, MSI 290x, HD7950 are my points of comparison 🙂

ID: grxrgde

I'm so immature I just want to make a mom joke or something

4 : Anonymous2021/03/23 11:18 ID: grx04iz

Thanks. Im still waiting for my Alphacool Walterblock. But i think i have V1. I got the Card in january.

5 : Anonymous2021/03/23 10:52 ID: grwy6gt

You do not have to tear down the GPU to find out which PCB you have

They are some change between the both version on the backplate

V1 and V2

ID: grxgtek

For someone who isn't pc savy, just quit console gaming around 1 month ago after 20+ years, according to your v1/v2 pictures looks like I have a rx6800xt v2.

In easy terms what's the difference between these two v1/v2

Apologies if this is a silly question just I'm interested in trying to learn more

ID: grxn296

The v2 model is the Speedster Core version, the V1 is the black version.

ID: grxnsxj

There's no way they added caps to the front of the board just to keep the caps on the back. This looks like a cost-cutting measure, which would be fine if the SKU was different, but it's not.

I don't know, we need someone with the both version for try in gaming and compare result

Can you send me a good picture of your GPU backplate ? It's hard to find a V2 backplate on google

EDIT : Find it on XFX website

from someone who has one, if you are on the edge of doing it vs not doing it, just dont. the Merc is a great cooling card out of the box

ID: grxgi8b

I have this card and I'm a new pc gamer after using console for 20+ years

On some games playing on high or top graphics the gpu junction temp will get to high 80s or highest Ives seen 91 and that's on sea of thieves.

Is this OK?

ID: grxh610

normal

ID: grxql7h

Amd says junctions up to 110 is normal. Havent seen a 6800 xt get that high but 5700xts lived in that range

ID: grxwsa7

Junction temp can go up to 110. The fact that yours is 90 shows that the card is boosting properly. Junction is the absolute hottest part of the die and the gpu temp is the average.

ID: grxxshm

90 is the target junction temp, 110 is max. Basically every game you’ve been playing has been so easy for the card to handle that the cooler is keeping it below target temp. You’re fine if it runs at 90 all day long

ID: grxh3px

Yeah theoretically your card could hold all 90 tho cooler is better generally as you can boost more. You could try a light undervolt and find you even gain more performance as it runs cooler. Otherwise if you feel more adept you could switch out the thermal pads with higher heat transfer ones (memory especially tho it's not much gain) can improve temps and repasting the gpu die could work too (liquid metal could drop crazy temps, but is a scarier thing to work with).

ID: grxrxww

Theres always undervolting, or using a higher fan speed slider in radeon drivers if youd like lower temps.

ID: grygjrv

They are piss easy to undervolt

Mine doesn't go over 60C and junction temps of 75c at 900mhz

ID: grz3z9i

On horizon zero dawn I barely go over 60ish on best settings.

ID: grxgpp0

I’ve never seen anything close to that. You might want to check your setup in your pc to make sure it has sufficient cooling paths in the case

7 : Anonymous2021/03/23 14:35 ID: grxla27

Interested in temps once you have the Bykski block. I had their Radeon VII block and temps were great, even compared to buddies running an EK block. Currently im waiting on the Alphacool Red Devil 6900XT waterblock.

ID: grxoat2

Yes no problem

ID: grxngpg

I have the bykski block on a nitro+ 6900, temps are great

Edit: don't do this combo, it doesn't fit without carving up the waterblock

ID: grxof70

Can you confirm me the thickness of the pads is 0.5mm ?

8 : Anonymous2021/03/23 17:51 ID: grycjom

That is a remarkably cheaper looking PCB as well.

9 : Anonymous2021/03/23 14:01 ID: grxgxhm

Not sure if I miss something, are we comparing a 6800XT with an 6900XT? Should they have the same PCB?

ID: grxkd6j

Basically XFX changed the deisgn of the PCB after this model is launched for whatever reason. So there are 2 versions of each the 6800XT and the 6900XT.

ID: grxkggb

Ah, thanks!

10 : Anonymous2021/03/23 14:47 ID: grxmuvo

I think Xfx has different models under the same merc brand.

ID: grxruzk

Yes exactly, they have two Merc

The Merc black and The Merc Core

ID: grxst5t

They have three!

Merc Core
Merc Black
Merc Ultra

11 : Anonymous2021/03/23 16:18 ID: grxzgb0

Great information to have!

Off topic: How did you put images inside of your text? I have never seen that in Reddit and it's making me really happy.

ID: grzjms2

You had a option to add a picture on PC now, impossible on phone app

ID: grzjp4t

That rocks.

Thanks mate!!

12 : Anonymous2021/03/23 17:33 ID: gry9zqx

Not familiar with the Core model but I remember someone asked about it before and I noticed it has a downgraded heatsink design thats thinner and has one less heatpipe. Is it possible they downgraded the PCB too?

13 : Anonymous2021/03/23 17:01 ID: gry5gdc

V1 = 2 DP, 1 HDMI, 1 USB-C V2 = 3 DP, 1 HDMI

ID: grya5ya

Not so reliable, an early batch of V1 also had 3 DP and no USB-C.

14 : Anonymous2021/03/23 21:09 ID: grz4794

You guys are getting 6800xt's?

ID: grzjduh

Yes i had a 6800XT Merc since end of December

15 : Anonymous2021/03/23 14:46 ID: grxmrz1

Is this a reference card ? seriously i will wait a year least with ordering if this is a reference card, i don't wanna go thru BS and be at risk not being able watercool my card cos there wheren't many of those pcb visions due production issues etc, if watercooled since the 9800 gtx cards from nvidia

ID: grxoiv8

No, it's not a reference pcb/card
