- HBO's The Last of Us adaptation to shoot in Calgary area from July 2021
I really hope this isn't badID: gsy04xt
It’s HBO, I have hopeID: gsynj64
Yeah HBO rarely lets me down. And Pedro Pascal is great in everything I've seenID: gsyug8a
Druckmann is showrunning with Craig Mazin of Chernobyl and it has the same composer as the game. Pedro Pascal is going to be great as Joel, I recommend checking out Prospect to get an idea of what he might be like. Even if it doesn't end up being great, it won't be bad.ID: gsz8my7
I think the Mandalorian is a great example of why he will be great as Joel. Hardened lone wolf type survivor with the task of protecting and delivering a critically important child to a specific destination. And he is amazing as the mandalorian even though we barely ever see his face. He’s gonna kill itID: gszw189
jaime lannister looks like a better joelID: gszqs2a
You must not be from around Calgary. The set design teams and location scouts won’t have much work to do. This sounds like a great way for them to get that visual post apocalypse look and do it while paying in Canadian dollarettes.ID: gsy1qql
I’m glad it’s with the Chernobyl guy because Neil does his best when put in check by others.ID: gszvxnk
they shouldve cast jaime lannister instead
ITT: People who shit on casting because the actors don’t look 100% like the characters.ID: gt0f4m6
After Heath Ledger and his Joker, I've learned not to judge a casting until I have seen the result.ID: gsxwq8r
Imagine if the only criteria was to look like the character. That would be terrible. You need people who know how to actID: gsyqd1g
I mean... there’s nikolaj coster waldau (jamie lannister’s actor) who 1. Looks alot more identical to Joel, 2. Is a phenomenal fucking actor, and 3. Prolly has more chemistry with the Ellie actress cuz they would’ve been on the same sets with eachother (for the last GoT season). That last part i’m just throwing in there but the first 2 are valid lol
Maybe he was busy or they just weren’t able to get him on board... what could’ve been though 🙁ID: gsxvut3
I'm stoked for Pedro Pascal and Lyanna Mormont to be Ellie, the spunk is totally there.ID: gt0c2a2
Is Pedro Pascal playing Joel?ID: gszxgzb
Josh Brolin and Ellen degeneresID: gsy0lsm
It’s funny because my gripe isn’t even with PP not looking like Joel, I think he could actually pull the look off pretty well, just that the voice I feel like is going to be way off. Either way I’m stoked about this.ID: gsyb1an
Weird thing to worry about. Andrew Lincoln, who plays Rick in the walking dead has a London accent in real life but nails the southern draw in the show.ID: gsyy4hp
For people worried about Pedro Pascal doing a “Joel” voice, I think with a few tweaks to his performance in “Prospect” he’s already done it.
It’s also a pretty great sci-fi film, especially for being one on a budget, that does a TON of world building and kinda fits into that “space western” genre. You can catch it on Netflix right now, and I’d recommend you not even click on that trailer and just watch it instead. Also, it was based on a 13 minute short film by the same name from DUST on YouTube. <—- Link for the lazy.ID: gsyios2
Here's a thought, the voice is totally inconsequential to the character and this adaptation.
The voice can't be "off" for a character that by all accounts you don't even know. It could be a Carbon copy of Joel, it could not be, even if it was meant to be a complete recreation of the game, the voice is an inconsequential aspect that has no bearing on who this character is.
These details you nerds stress over are beyond the point, Joel could be from Florida, Oregon or New York. He could be from Canada, He could be European. This has little baring on the character Joel, that is not what makes him an interesting character. These are the types of things that adaptations adapt.ID: gszwp36
just that the voice I feel like is going to be way off
It probably just seems this way, because I'm guessing the only things you've seen Pedro Pascal in before are The Mandalorian, GoT, Narcos, etc...stuff where he's used more-or-less the same voice every time.
He hasn't done anything drastically different in those, because he hasn't needed to. And I think sometimes people underestimate how much work film and TV actors put in to developing the voices and accents for their characters when required (like it presumably will be for TLOU).
Plus, it's not like a Texas drawl is a particularly hard accent to pull off. Everyone and their grandma can do a Matthew McConaughey impression.
I can’t think of any place to better represent a post apocalyptic hell’s cape than Calgary.ID: gsytndb

I’m from Hamilton Ontario. I’m surprised they didn’t choose there. I guess they didn’t want humanity to loom that hopelessID: gsystxf
I’m from Edmonton and I approve this messageID: gszx9d0
They should film this here at West Edmonton Mall - it was pretty apocalyptic for awhile during the pandemic originally lol.ID: gsytg0s
I’ve only spent one day there but I thought it seemed like a great place.
Cool, just as I'm about to move out of townID: gsygrch
At least you are getting out of calgary.ID: gsyln1h
Are you leaving cause the flames keep breaking your heart?ID: gsyxkb5
Lol not actually into hockey but man are they eating the dust. Just moving for school
good for us Calgarians maybeID: gsy7pia
Where do i sign up to be an extraID: gszxht0
I’m in Edmonton and I’ll gladly drive up to be an extra as one of the Fireflies.ID: gsycilr
If you're on a the mailing list for the actors union there's a good chance you might actually be able to do that.ID: gsylsm4
Screw that! Where do I sign up for a character role?!! Time to get a hold of my agent
I was surprised by Pedro initially mainly due to his size, but after seeing Prospect he’s perfect for the role.ID: gsyjt0i
Again, typical reddit fanboy casting giving the 'ol "physique" way too much importance. I don't know why you dudes obsess over other mens height and muscle mass.
Literally has no baring on the character whatsoever, unless they cast someone cartoonishly big like the mountain, or on the opposite end Peter Dinklage... literally any able bodied man could play this role.
He is a man that can take care of himself physically in a fight, that's about it.ID: gsyldhe
The person gave approval and you went negative about it
I’m excited to see a show not filmed in Toronto.ID: gsyoqow
A large portion of Canadian film production is in VancouverID: gsyszzx
Yeah I know. Canada is cheap place to film USA locations lol
so if it's filming in july, is it reasonable to be expecting late 2021/early 2022 for this?ID: gt081ev
If you clicked the article, you'd find out the answer to your question
That's where I live and am an actor who does extra work! Please please please
Man i hope it turns out good but the casting is bad especially for ellie
Casting isn't based on who looks the the most like the character. Casting is much more involved than that
Seriously lol. Thank God redditors aren't casting agents. They'd fuck a movie up so fast.
"Can they act?"
"No, but they sure do look a lot like em though!"
Would you mind if joel was played by a midget?
Gerald Butler would have been the perfect cast for this role
Think Pedro Pascal is a far better actor tbh
Agreed, not even close.
I think doubters are going to be surprised at how well Pascal pulls this off. He's absolutely crushed every major role he's ever been in, and I think people are underestimating how a little makeup, a good fake accent, and some Hollywood magic can very easily make this work.
The image and voice that a lot people have in their heads for Pascal right now is not the same thing you're going to see on screen when the show airs.
lol no, that guy can’t act to save his life.
Josh Brolin was my pick
Josh brolin was the only fan-cast actor who looks the part and can actually act. Happy for Pedro tho
Please no no Druckmann
Please yes yes Druckmann
Shouldn't be a problem with HBO. They don't half-ass projects that are this high-profile.
HBO is known for their production values though. Also I think we’re in a post Netflix era now with Disney+ where shows are getting movie budgets anyway just look at the new MCU shows.
HBO has a track record of perfection but the last 2 things I’ve watched by them were weak, low budget and sub par; I Know this much is True and Your Honor. Marvel and Disney are financially in a different league altogether from HBO. I mean if it was being made by them, then yeah the budget is no issue. The Last of Us won’t have anything like the mass appeal of their shows it’ll be a violent late night, bleak, gritty post apocalyptic drama like The Walking Dead which is another series which looks horribly low budget and cheap. Every time I’ve ever had Netflix I unsubscribe at the end of the free month, Amazon too. It’s just episode after episode churned out, stories which barely progress, cliffhangers constantly. It’s completely ruined the quality of tv series.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure it will be very good, I just hope it has the budget to make it a classic.
According to Jason Kenney the production is the largest in Canadian film/TV history. Now take it with a grain of salt considering who's saying it and the fact that many $200 million productions have filmed in both Toronto and Vancouver. At the very least it seems to have a big budget attached to it.
Hey, did you know that Naughty Dog isn’t making the tv show? This happening does not have any bearing one that.
I don't like how they said the first season would "greatly deviate" from the original game. Gonna keep an open mind, though.
There isn't enough content in the first game for a whole seasons worth of TV. The game is only like 10 hours and probably less than half of that could be directly translated to TV (unless you want to follow Joel around as he gathers up broken scissors and sneaks around bad guys for half an hour at a time). They were obviously going to add chunks of new story, and you can't do that without making adjustments to what's already there.
Yeah. Each season we only had one stop along the way. I presume we’ll just have a few more roadblocks. Last of Us was already kinda episodic.
