- Landmark deal for Deviation Games to create AAA original IP with Sony Interactive Entertainment
-
Sony filling in their biggest hole in their portfolio, FPS and multiplayer in one swoop. These guys are ex-Treyarch devs and the last time ex-COD guys broke off and formed there own studio it became Respawn. Here’s hoping we get our own Titanfall/Apex/COD type of game!
ID: h1bo7rmID: h1bpy8dLooks like they’re just trying to diversity their portfolio in general. It’s been a pretty diverse launch for the PS5 (genre-wise) and I’d like to see them continue this trend for the future.
ID: h1bvqu9These guy are from the zombies part of CoD I would love a Coop game in that vein.
ID: h1bxu62See with Respawn that was all the original creative talent behind COD. Treyarch in particular are just copy and pasters so, I wouldn't put them on the same expectation. Nor should they just clone COD or another FPS. The genre desperately needs more variety.
ID: h1bzr35You’re significantly underselling the talent of Treyarch.
They gave us cod zombies. Plus I personally preferred their cods over other devs cods.
ID: h1c6011I’m not a massive fan of Jason blundels take on cod zombies but nothing he did resembled copy pasting
ID: h1bxhsvBecause those games are rare? Battlefield showed that people don’t even want singleplayer fps games. Sony doesn’t need to fill a hole where none is, sony doesn’t need to publish its own game in every genre, thats why we have third parties.
I hope it will not be a fps game.
ID: h1c1bsnSince killzone and resistance there has been a hole for Sony exclusive fps multiplayer. Not everything has to be for everyone. I hope you’re wrong and that this bothers you for a long time.
ID: h1c1eryDeviation has a chance to make a really unique shooter thanks to the Dualsense controller. We've already seen how developers are able to take advantage of the controller and come up with unique gun mechanics with Rift Apart and Returnal. There's still a market for singleplayer FPS games, just look Doom. The issue with Battlefield is that Battlefield generally doesn't have good campaigns, so it makes sense for them to shift to solely multiplayer
ID: h1bxrcuThank goodness. Sony makes all these games and almost none can be played with friends.

Blundell is the goat
ID: h1bsp4pSo happy for him, and excited for his new game. His storytelling is one of a kind. I hope he is just as wacky, cryptic, and progressive with his storytelling this new game as he was for CoD zombies.
-
As a big cod zombies fan I'm very excited to see what Blundell and his new team cook up. A lot of the great stuff from treyarch zombies was thanks to Jason Blundell (among a lot of other important people of course).
-
If anyone does not know who Blundell is, he is responsible for leading the development on some of the most well known COD zombies maps ever (Mob of the Dead, Origins, Der Eisendrache, Shadow of Evil). In my opinion he is a really talented studio lead developer and is highly responsible for making BO3 zombies one of the most popular zombies iterations ever. I do not usually keep tabs on individuals within the gaming industry but in this instance I certainly will.
-
Deviation Games is a new studio by ex treyarch heads (I think?). I think I remember those guys talking about BLOPS. Can someone confirm.
ID: h1bk4ddYeah lead by Jason Blundel the lead of zombies and campaign behind the best zombie maps of all time like Mob of the dead, Origins and Shadow of Evil.
ID: h1bl0elMy theory is they already have a plan and a prototype for the game they want to make. I think they left to make their dream game and Sony picked up on that (as they often seem to do) and is gonna get it done.
-
Firewalk (probably multiplayer), Haven (probably narrative driven), and now Deviation (probably multiplayer).
-
Kinda geeking out here. I made their videos, website animations, and Easter Eggs videos.
-
Sony really wasn't messing around when they said this generation would have more exclusives than any past. Sheesh.
ID: h1bn684They have no choice because XBox is finally going into console exclusives with their system. Exclusives win generations

ID: h1bgvehThey knocked it out of the park with Black Ops 3
is this a meme?
ID: h1biuf2Not sure if you're aware but they're specifically the Zombies team. The CoD Zombies community is pretty much unanimous in thinking BO3 is the best of all the games when it comes to the zombies mode.
ID: h1bi4koDamn I was hoping this was a bi weekly American history game but that's the wrong Dave Anthony
-
For those unaware, Dave Anthony was the director of both Black Ops and Black Ops 2.
ID: h1buv2iOh shit, didn’t know that. Very nice
ID: h1c7xsyThis is exciting. Those were my favourites from a campaign and multiplayer perspective.

Love these partnerships. Fostering real growth

AAA original IP where the devs were given all that creative control?
With Sony?
But all those reports said Sony isn't open to that!

Los Angeles, CA (June 10, 2021) – Deviation Games announced today a landmark deal for the independent game development studio, to develop a groundbreaking AAA original IP with Sony Interactive Entertainment. Veteran game developers and lifelong friends Dave Anthony and Jason Blundell have teamed up once again and will co-head the studio. Building on their success of creating record shattering games which generated billions in revenue, they have assembled a team of over 100 “Deviators” to develop this cutting-edge game title.
“To be creatively unleashed and given the freedom to build something entirely new is a dream come true” says Deviation CEO Dave Anthony. “It’s an honor to be working with Sony and their entire team. Their track record of producing high-quality, award-winning games is unparalleled, and we could not be more thrilled to embrace the opportunity to expand PlayStation’s portfolio.”
“We’re building a team of passionate, creative, experienced developers to take on the unknown!” says Chief Creative Officer Jason Blundell. “Our team loves to play games as well as make them, so making a home for developers to create the best work of their career is not just our goal… but our calling.”
“In our industry, in the craft of making the best new games, there is absolutely no substitute for the marriage of pure talent, decades of experience and the proven track record that the team at Deviation brings to the table,” said Hermen Hulst, Head of PlayStation Studios. “We are honored to partner with and invest in daring creatives, recognizing full well the challenges of building teams from the ground up and developing successful new IP’s. We’re very enthusiastic about the creative vision that Deviation is passionately executing for their first, original project,” said Hulst.
About Deviation Games

-
For those who have never looked into the Treyarch Zombies storyline: prepare your anus, Jason Blundell's stories are batshit crazy.
-
If there was any doubt that this would be a continuation of their Cod Zombies style gameplay, they've also hired JCBackfire, a Zombies YouTuber who's done a lot of videos with Blundell before.
-
Jason Blundell fuck yeh
-
Official PR:
“Groundbreaking" original AAA IP
Team is over 100 devs as of now
Given freedom to create something entirely new
-
The studio was founded last year, so it will be a while before we see something from them. According to their linkedin, they're approx ~100 strong.
ID: h1bl2qpI think they left to make their dream game. And already have some stuff that Sony got to see.
-
This is huge, and E3 has just begun.
-
Nice get, good to see PlayStation invest in what will list likely be multiplayer ip
-
Hmm exTreyarch, huh?
That could have some potential!
-

Firewalk is also making a multiplayer shooter for Sony so looks like PlayStation’s getting 2 of those in near future.
