- latest AMD Radeon Software is using a version of Chrome that is over one year old, AMD please fix!
-
Better yet, remove it.
ID: h34ctkiID: h33wfzqfully agree that would be the best fix
ID: h33zdkmyou can disable it in the settings
ID: h34eu65God I freaking wish. I hate how every app has to be built off Chromium today. What happened to highly efficient purpose built programs that are made from scratch for a specific task? Now everything is some slog fork of Chromium and essentially nothing more than a webpage. I absolutely loath it.
ID: h35030aYeah... Every application is built in high-level languages so that they can be deployed faster, and developers don't have to do any real work. It's just quantity over quality.
No more web-based UI, no more. The best computing days were the Windows 2000 and XP era, where we actually had powerful desktop applications, full of options, menus, lists, etc. That could be configured to do very specific tasks. Developers would even improve apps over time, instead of removing features...
ID: h34gxfwAMD Radeon Software isn't a web app, it's a native app built with Qt toolkit. It has a built in browser for use in overlay during gaming if you want to check out a guide or something. Very helpful for single screen gaming.
ID: h34vrusI remember getting down voted to hell when I simply said "Why the fuck does ANYONE need a browser in their graphics software? Get rid of it.".
ID: h345wytYes, remove/disable it, best answer.
-
Why does it even have to have an embedded web browser? Just pass it off to the default browser if somebody clicks a link.
ID: h34xp31Just pass it off to the default browser if somebody clicks a link.
The technology just isn't there yet /s
ID: h361wfnBest part is it’s way easier to do that it’s literally process.start(“url”); and it’ll open in default browser vs how they’re doing it.
ID: h38ayv7The point of the embedded browser is so that you can quickly access it through the Radeon overlay while you're in a game, since some games don't like tabbing out.
ID: h36e300They already do that in their lite version.
ID: h353xkuIt's less about links in the driver software and more about people being able to browse the web with Radeon Overlay when in a game.
ID: h35gnbuAlt+Tab doesn't exist.
-
Like we need a fucking browser in the drivers!
ID: h34nn80We didnt want any of that fancy crap. Where is my Catalyst control center? That had everything we needed and nothing else.
ID: h34pgtsWow I forgot catalyst control center existed. Thing with CCC was that it also sucked and was super buggy.
ID: h34svgaI still remember the olden days back when the omega drivers existed.
ID: h34t463CCC? The Chaos Control Center?
Thanks, no.
It never worked and it should never come back. -
beware, last time I mentioned about this the mods threatened to remove the post since "it is almost not related with AMD"...
ID: h34ah70yeah that sucks since it is a security issue that comes with the AMD driver and trying to silence users that report that is a very bad move...
ID: h35clwbYeah I hope they're not trying to pull a Western Digital
ID: h357fbpHere:
I have archived this comment in case this post gets taken down for some reason which would be unfair. (It's in queue at the moment of writing this) -
IIRC AMD is using QtWebengine, which doesn't receive an update every time a new chrome version gets released.
ID: h34h8ugthe version of QtWebEngine they are using (at least according to the user agent) is 5.14.1 which released Jan 2020 and thus is over one year old.
There is no excuse to not update the framework to the latest available stable version especially when browser components are involved.
ID: h34i9gbQT 5.14 isn't the latest either. Damn, AMD needs to show some enthusiasm for keeping their toolkit up to date.
I know it sucks for the devs due to the additional need for testing and validation and sometimes APIs change or break between versions, but using the latest toolkit version available is an unwritten law at this point.
ID: h34moicAs a developer, there are likely some valid reasons they haven’t updated QtWebEngine. As a consumer, please update this now.
ID: h34yxtrLatest open source version of Qt WebEngine is 5.15.2 which bundles Chromium 83 with security fixes from 86. And long term support version for enterprise customers is somewhere at 87.
-
This is why you don't embed browsers. Jesus Christ AMD we have been telling you this is dumb for years.
-
Put in a report. Amd does read here but they cant see every post.
-
This browser has very bad usability and zero management in terms of privacy, cache cleanup etc... and propably is full of critical security bugs.
ID: h34kd4fAgree and why is it part of the GPU driver in the first place?
Makes no sense to me.
-
Settings - Preferences - Web Browser - Disable then it will launch your default browser when u click on the Star icon for their Feedback vote page.
-
Embedded browsers are dumb and unnecessary. Good thin I can disable it, but it shouldn't be there to begin with.
-
I'm still pissed minimal install removes wattman.
-
Don't bundle shit in the drivers if you're not willing to update it.
-
Who da fuck would use the broswer inside wattman???
ID: h34m8rsexactly that is why they should remove it
-
And here's me just finding out there's an entire freaking WEB BROWSER crammed in my GPU drivers... -_-
I mean, it'd be one thing to have like a super stripped & lightweight down Chromium or WebKit core built into it, but an ENTIRE DAMN BROWSER?! facepalm
ID: h373savI mean, it'd be one thing to have like a super stripped & lightweight down Chromium or WebKit core built into it, but an ENTIRE DAMN BROWSER?! facepalm
But that's literally what it is? They use QtWebEngine for this I'm pretty sure.

So is the Steam Overlay. Runs Chrome 79. Credit card information, phishing, so many potential ways of screwing someone up.
ID: h35aj0yYou are right, Steam has the same issue and also they should fix that asap.
ID: h35duvoI think Google needs to toughen up requirements for updating Chrome in Chromium based applications like they did with Android and OEMs.
-
"Let's build our applications on top of a web browser!"
And that's how you get BS like this:
Before it was fixed, that game launcher would "idle" at 20-30% of the CPU even when it's in the background and I'm running a game. The only workaround at the time was to kill the launcher.
ID: h34chwiit is not built on top of web browser... it just have the QT embedded web browser built into it.
P/S: i am not saying it is safer than electron-like apps... just stating the fact that it is not built on top of web browser.
ID: h34g8s3you are exactly right, but judging by the user agent, they are using QtWebEngine 5.14.1 (which released 27.Jan 2020 (!) so over a year ago)
The latest version of QtWebEngine is 5.15.3 and a few month ago Qt6 released.
There is no excuse to to use the latest version of the framework especially when it comes to browser embedded stuff.
Or simply remove the browser "feature" completely.
ID: h34a8uqBut Radeon settings is built on the Qt

Why the heck that gpu driver had a browser in the first place??

Yes. This would also probably make the download about 100 MB smaller. I really don't get why everyone, and their mother, need to embed a browser these days? Doesn't everyone know that they are a security risk about five minutes after the release?
