What is the point of the xGMI on Threadripper? No board supports multiple chips, or are they talking about the on-die memory interconnect that runs infinity fabric?

No board supports multiple chips,

Yet

Since there was no word on "Chagall" at computex, I'll believe when I see it on amd.com page.

"When Matisse dies," Pablo Picasso remarked in the 1950s, "Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what colour really is".

I would bet some money that, sooner or later, AMD will name "Chagall" one of their processors...

Marc_Chagall

Marc Chagall (born Moishe Shagal; 6 July [O.S. 24 June] 1887 – 28 March 1985) was a Russian-French artist of Belarusian Jewish origin. An early modernist, he was associated with several major artistic styles and created works in a wide range of artistic formats, including painting, drawings, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramics, tapestries and fine art prints. Art critic Robert Hughes referred to Chagall as "the quintessential Jewish artist of the twentieth century" (though Chagall saw his work as "not the dream of one people but of all humanity").

Now that we have stacked memory, how long before there's a Threadripper APU and APUs are actually good?

Also, while we're talking about ThreadRipper, it was kind of a dick move for AMD to abandon TR4 after how much people invested in the platform.

A "Threadripper APU" wouldn't make sense because of how much it would cost to produce, the small market even interested in such a solution and the cost of the platform.

APUs only make sense because they are cheap to manufacture, target a big chunk of the market and the platform they are on is relatively inexpensive.

It would make a hell of a development machine.

It would make sense if it were built from discrete graphics chiplets...

I'm there with you, I've wanted to see an enthusiast grade APU for a while now. It wouldn't make good financial sense, it wouldn't make good engineering sense, I'm not even sure if there's a market for an "enthusiast APU," but goddamn would it be cool.

It'll almost certainly never happen, but damn I would love to see it.

I'm not sure that it wouldn't make good engineering sense - but that'd depend on what the stacked memories IO interface looks like and whether it's capable of providing the bandwidth required for a GPU (a 2D memory interface could provide a ridiculous amount of bandwidth compared to a 1D interconnect).

But depending on performance, there would be some market for such a product: it could be an absolute beast in terms of both CPU and graphics (not sure about compute, since AMD bifurcated the market in order to focus on efficiency) and with CPU <--> GPU latency comparable or better than consoles.

Build a ridiculous highend water-cooled machine and send out review samples - even if the market is small, (if it performed well) the halo wouldn't be.

And enthusiasts would buy the thing.

Of course the chip shortage is still a problem.

For High-End APU's maybe but the market is small, the rumor is that AMD might integrate a small iGPU in most Ryzen CPU's (maybe in the IO die). But the small iGPU will not benefit from the faster memory then because well, it's small.

As for Threadripper, I don't see this coming because there's just no market for it, and they want people to buy their GPUs.

Speaking of GPUs; one of the patents published a few weeks ago talked about an AI chiplet for the GPU, while they could add it to Threadripper but it makes more sense for GPUs. Maybe Threadripper could have some other acceleration chiplets, like an extra compute chiplet for things like AVX-512 and even more. Or even 1 or 2 FPGA chiplets assuming their Xilinx acquisition will have the green light hopefully.
