Critic Reviews

Areajugones - Spanish - 9.5 / 10

‎F1 2021 is the perfect complement for any Formula 1 fan. The new game modes elevate this edition several points above its predecessor thanks to a simulator that Codemasters has turned into a gift for fans of single-seater cars, and that every year comes closer to perfection.‎

Ars Technica - Unscored

Perhaps the most important thing about F1 2021 is that Codemasters has not messed with the actual mechanics of driving the car much, beyond tweaks necessary for the 2021-spec cars. With a good force-feedback wheel, the cars are engaging to drive, and you can feel subtleties in cars from different teams—a McLaren handles differently to an Alpine to a Red Bull to a Mercedes, as you'd hope they would. If you're a fan of the sport, you'll probably enjoy playing F1 2021.

Atomix - Spanish - 85 / 100

F1 2021 is an extremely complete experiencie that the racing fans should definitely check out. Veterans will feel right at home, while newcomers shouldn't be too afraid of the mechanics thanks to all the accesibility options.

AusGamers - 9 / 10

Bazimag - Persian - 9 / 10

F1 developers have perfected their formula in the past 4 to 5 years and F1 2021 didn’t really need to make a lot of changes but the two player career mode is a welcomed addition but the returning story mode is not as good as the rest of the package and needs better writing and acting for future versions. The best asset here is the amount tweaks you can make to difficulty and simulation settings, making it a great choice for both causal and professional racing game fans.

COGconnected - 92 / 100

For anyone who has even the slightest interest in Formula 1 racing – and thanks to the Netflix documentary series Drive to Survive there may be many with their curiosity piqued – F1 2021 will become their new sports gaming pastime. Catering to both casual newcomers and the most exacting simulation-seekers, F1 2021 offers a mind-blowing amount of polished and entertaining content, whether your preference is to race alone or with others. With the new Braking Point single-player story and improvements and expansions to just about everything else, F1 2021 is that rare instance of an annual sports game that has managed to continue to get better with every release.

Chicas Gamers - Spanish - Unscored

F1 2021 is, like its predecessor at the time, the best game created in Formula 1. Following the path of success and improving it just enough, Codemasters puts us once again on the table with a title with which we will lose hours and hours in my team mode, watching Aiden Jackson at Breaking Point or fighting face to face with a player in Germany and another in Japan for a victory that can lead us to be among the best in e-sports.

Daily Mirror - 4 / 5 stars

With the raft of new features, the addition of Braking Point, vast customisation options and significant gameplay tweaks, F1 2021 is the most complete official Formula One video game ever made. F1 2021 has something for everyone, whether you're a newcomer to F1 or an avid fan of the sport, it's (almost) as epic as the real thing.

Digital Chumps - 9.5 / 10

'F1 2021' continues to grow on what 2020 built. It's a technical, story driver, fast, and fun ride. It's a continuation into a franchise that has become what any F1 fan, or honestly racing fan in general has been wanting for years.

Eurogamer - Recommended

An entertaining and surprisingly effective new story mode heads up an otherwise modest refresh for Codemasters' official series.

Everyeye.it - Italian - 8.5 / 10

F1 2021 is a solid chapter, full-bodied and full of content. It is probably one of the best hybridizations between simulation and accessibility on the market today. If on the track everything seemed to us in its place, and the Codemasters product has been able not only to confirm itself, but even to improve the excellent starting points of the previous year, the context, what once represented one of the most successful aspects of the package, has instead proved strangely in trouble: the annoying tearing phenomena and a raytracing just sketched and not always up to the situation have greatly reduced our involvement and the credibility of the whole.

FingerGuns - 9 / 10

The most essential game in the series for years, F1 2021 is a thoroughly enjoyable, accessible and gorgeous racing game. The new Braking Point narrative aspect is a triumph and there’s content and assistance options that will likely please most F1 fans.

Forbes - 8.75 / 10

There isn’t a ton to dislike about F1 2021. The latest version adds to the series’ win streak with another strong iteration. With a few additional layers to the visual and audio presentation, we could have been looking at a form of racing perfection. As it is, F1 2021 is still really good.

GameByte - 8 / 10

F1 2021 does nothing egregious to the tried and tested formula of an F1 game. There’s enough here to keep the die-hard fans happy and more than enough to enable newcomers to further explore their love for the sport. Simply lovely.

GamePro - German - 90 / 100

F1 2021 once again trumps its predecessor and, including its co-op career, is a fantastic racing game for newcomers and experts alike.

GameSpew - 9 / 10

F1 2021 is, without a doubt, Codemasters’ best F1 game to date. It’s just a shame that [Covid-19] hasn’t made its career mode quite as accurate as some might hope it to be, and some bits here and there seem to be lacking a bit of polish. Still, if you’re open to look past such issues, you’ll find a deep, rewarding racing experience that’s highly customisable. And if you delve into Braking Point, you’ll also find a story mode that genuinely adds to the package. Whether you’re an ardent F1 fan or not, F1 2021 is likely to be a contender for the accolade of best racing game of the year, that’s for sure.

Gameblog - French - 9 / 10

F1 2021 is a very good vintage. While remaining in technical and graphic excellence, the game adds an extra layer of links with real F1 and a bit of emotion with the Breaking Point mode. It is still very much into online gaming and even more so with career co-op. There is also a lot to do in all areas (management, development, tuning, driving), depending on the level of complexity that you have adapted to your tastes. A must have for any Formula One fan.

GamingBolt - [9 / 10]

Much of F1 2021 builds on the high-class foundation from previous games that make the series one of the best racing games out there, but new additions, especially Braking Point, are both great pieces of content on their own and optimistic foundational pieces for the future.

God is a Geek - 9 / 10

F1 2021 is the complete package. Braking Point is an excellent single-player experience, driving is perfection, and there's so much to do. It really does have everything, regardless of whether you are a fan of the sport or not.

Hardcore Gamer - 3.5 / 5

While Codemasters seems to have added a good amount of content to F1 2021, it still feels like the same experience at its core.

Hobby Consolas - Spanish - 86 / 100

F1 2021 is a great racing game, specially once you move into the car and feel the excellent handling and the great performance. Modes (specially Braking Point and classic content) could have been better, but you will feel like Hamilton and Verstappen racing each other for the victory.

IGN - 8 / 10

F1 2021 is the best-looking and most customisable instalment of series so far and, while it's a little plain, the new story mode is a well-executed and fun new addition.

IGN Italy - Italian - 9.2 / 10

F1 2021 is the apex point of these last three editions. The simcade gameplay is refined at its best and the new game modes are solid, impressive and fun. In the best F1 year to date since long time, we have the best F1 game ever.

IGN Spain - Spanish - 8 / 10

An excellent game on the track that presents Braking Point, its story mode, as a great novelty, and becomes the worst section of the whole title. If the idea is to keep this new mode, there is a lot of work to do. At the moment, it tastes like a precooked story, made in a hurry and without affection. Nothing to do with the rest of the proposals, which introduce us fully in the F1 world. If you come for the races, it is a spectacular videogame, but if you come for the story mode, be cautious.

LevelUp - Spanish - 8.8 / 10

For the second year in a row, the official game of Formula 1 will be a delight for fans of this category and those passionate about motorsport. Likewise, F1 2021 is already one of the best sports simulators out there and in terms of its own history, it is the best Formula 1 game so far.

Metro GameCentral - 8 / 10

Codemasters' best Formula One game so far adds an excellent story mode, along with a raft of new tweaks and options to make it more accessible.

Operation Sports - Unscored

F1 2021 creates an experience that justifies my desire for a PS5 and Xbox Series X, and if titles are going to start hitting this level of graphical fidelity and depth, we need to buckle in because the ride is going to be an incredible one.

PC Gamer - 91 / 100

Another superlative simulation of the Formula One world, now with an enjoyable story mode too.

PC Invasion - 8.5 / 10

Overall, F1 2021 still provides an unrivaled and amazing racing experience thanks to its MyTeam and Career modes, as well as a multitude of options to help fine-tune your racing style. Unfortunately, it's marred by a disappointing and disjointed Braking Point flagship story. Moreover, the improvements and changes to existing modes aren't as impactful as I had hoped. As such, if F1 2021 isn't as compelling if you extensively played last year's offering.

PCGamesN - 8 / 10

Much like the sport itself, the driving is as impressive as ever. But the worries about management's business practices endure, too. Fundamentally, F1 2021 is worth it for the handling model.

PPE.pl - Polish - 9 / 10

F1 2021 is a scene in which I will spend even more hours than in F1 2019. F1 2020 didn't pull me up that much, but that's because there were few changes. In the case of the latest part of the brand, it is radically different.

PlayStation Universe - 8 / 10

If you've grown tired of last year's game then you can probably sit this iteration out; for first time players, or those returning after a couple of years' hiatus, Formula 1 games have never felt so authentic, so in-depth, yet so accessible. Slip on your race suit and climb into the cockpit.

Push Square - 8 / 10

With a bunch of smart additions, F1 2021 is a cracking simulator for both die-hard fans and newcomers. The Braking Point story mode doesn't have a particularly compelling narrative, but it's a brilliant gateway into the motorsport and a primer for the wider game. Two Player Career, the Expert driving style, Real Season Start, and more make this the most customisable and accessible iteration yet, allowing you to play how you like across the game's excellent career options. Of course, the driving itself seals the deal, and it's a winner on that front. This is a no-brainer for F1 fans, but it's also a fantastic entry for newbie drivers to start with.

Saving Content - 5 / 5 stars

For an annual release, Codemasters manages to top themselves year over year, and this time is no different. After being bought by EA, I can only see positives by this relationship, and shows a promising future for the F1 series. The story of Braking Point is an absolute highlight, the return of fan-favorite Two Player Career mode is a delight, career mode is as fun as ever, and makes for a wonderful package. With raytracing, DLSS, and other next-generation features, F1 2021 feels truly fresh and exciting, like it hasn’t been before.

Screen Rant - 4.5 / 5 stars

Overall, F1 2021 is an excellent entry in the series, with a number of additions and tweaks that make it feel refreshing to play. With one of the most comprehensive Career Modes available in a sports game and enough options to make it accessible to anyone, F1 2021 is enjoyable for newcomers and veterans alike. Fans may want to keep an eye on outside influences on Codemasters as time goes on, particularly with cosmetic options, but F1 2021 still provides the incredible thrills and deep choices of how to play that the series has become known for.

Shacknews - 8 / 10

The future of the F1 series is cloudy right now. EA is the new boss, but its influence probably won’t be seen until next year’s game. F1 2021 adds a few new fixins to the strong foundation of last year’s game, along with the misfire that is Braking Point. Having the option to add dynamic dramatic events to the existing Career mode would be preferable to bland pre-rendered cutscenes that come with Braking Point. There's a lot of fun to be had with F1 2021, even if a true next-gen leap may not come along until next year.

Spaziogames - Italian - 8.3 / 10

F1 2021 embraces next-gen unlocking performances and introducing themes consoles had never met before, such as 120fps and ray tracing. On top of that, it improves its content offer with new modes and retains its successful, nuanced simularcade driving experience - and that, despite some old flaw, makes for one of the best racing games around.

Stevivor - 8.5 / 10

Whether you’re a fan of Formula 1, a die-hard sim enthusiast or even just a casual racing game fan then it’s hard to go past F1 2021. There’s something for everyone in this years offering, and I can’t wait to get stuck in to the new tracks later this year.

The Games Machine - Italian - 8.5 / 10

F1 2021 incorporates (and improves) all the features of the previous F1 games developed by Codemasters. Driving is fun and can be adapted to suit both newbies and those looking for a sufficiently complex experience, although players who look for a full simulation might be slightly disappointed. Game modes are numerous, varied and well structured. Both those who love to run alone and those who prefer to compete with (or against) other players will find something that will keep them busy for months.

TheGamer - 4 / 5 stars

Whether you’re looking for fierce competition or you simply want to get as close to driving around F1’s real tracks as life allows without becoming a professional driver, F1 2021 has you covered. It’s the closest you’re ever going to feel to the real thing while sitting on your couch, and isn’t that really what playing any sports sim is all about?

TheSixthAxis - 8 / 10

F1 2021 is one of the broadest depictions of the sport ever created, building on familiar cars and handling alongside returning multiplayer, esports, and My Team career modes, while the new Braking Point story gives you a taste of the teammate drama you loved to watch (and mock) in Netflix's Drive to Survive.

Wccftech - 9 / 10

F1 2021 has undeniably struggled with COVID and the limitations it has put on both the sport and the game. However, either despite or because of these limitations, this manages a step forward that the series failed to take two years ago, it brings a genuine story to the game. Braking Point is an undeniable success and, one would hope, marks a starting point in which Codemasters can advance as the series moves forward. Beyond this new mode, almost every aspect has been polished to a diamond-like shine, with the only aspects needing improvement are the MyTeam mode, which already looks lacking as a story of progression when compared to Braking Point, and the poor AI in team management. Despite this minor issue, there's no doubt in my mind that this is the best of the franchise so far and a great launching point to the next generation.

Worth Playing - 9.4 / 10

It all shapes up to make F1 2021 more than, well, F1 2020+1. The new game has applied a generous amount of polish to the things that it carried forward, and the new modes, such as Braking Point and the two-player career mode, add some appreciable entertainment to a solid racing game. It is equally enjoyable to an F1 nut as to someone who is entering the sport fandom, and I have been having a great time whenever I fire it up for a few laps.

Xbox Achievements - 90 / 100

While it's a shame that classic cars have been nixed this year, F1 2021 is nonetheless an exhilarating racing game brimming with compelling modes and customisation features, as well as the new Braking Point story mode, for countless hours of wheel-to-wheel action. Another sterling effort from Codemasters, racing games don't really come much better than this.

2 : Anonymous2021/07/16 17:04 ID: h5f1jux

Thats some good scores. Will definitely be picking this up, I just wish it had a VR to complement a steering wheel

ID: h5h4w7d

I daydream about driving on a sim rig with VR.

3 : Anonymous2021/07/16 17:26 ID: h5f4mlt

Really good from what I've played so far. Improved on last years yet again

ID: h5i5o4l

Are the load times significantly better?

ID: h5itavk

A lot better yeah. You will go from choosing to start a race and the load screen only last 2-3 secs before it's ready

4 : Anonymous2021/07/16 17:49 ID: h5f7y8a

As someone who has mostly only played (for racing games) Need for Speed, Burnout, and Gran Turismo (and.. ye old Tokyo Xtreme Racer), would this game still be a good recommendation?
Those scores are mighty convincing.

ID: h5f9azu

Dont buy if you are not F1 fan... Watch some races, if it is exciting to you then buy.

ID: h5f8i0p

Maybe not if you're only into arcade racers. You have to be methodical, learn to decelerate without just slamming the breaks, race cleanly (as in, you absolutely cannot touch any other cars), you can spin out pretty easily and there's certainly nothing like drifting or other arcade staples.

There should be demos for the older games on the store to try out

ID: h5f94sl

Yeah out of the games he listed, GT would probably be the closest. The f1 games aren't full hard-core simulation games, and the settings can certainly be adjusted for more arcade style, but I feel like game is more intended to be played on the Sim side.

The main draw of career mode for me is starting with an underfunded and underpowered team and slowly building them up through race performances and upgrades. If that gameplay loop is something that sounds interesting, it could be a good match.

ID: h5gnzp0

I'd recommend it. Been playing 2020 and decided to buy 2021 at launch and I don't regret it.

The handling is really nice, but my personal favourite aspect is the strategy that goes on the races with pit stops, safety cars, dynamic weather and mid-race failures. Also if you're an offline player the MyTeam and MyCareer mode give you some good hours of fun.

Be aware that the game has microtransactions though, they're purely cosmetic, but they're there.

ID: h5fat5l

If you like GT Sport you will like F1 2021, trust me.

ID: h5h51xl

I'd say if you're keen to try something new, the go ahead. This year's game has a lot more customisation in the settings so you can tweak them to help you acclimatise to the gameplay

ID: h5ig7jt

Also keep in mind thst the game is FAST. Tried several racers and everytime I jump on some of the other racers they feel really slow compared to F1.

5 : Anonymous2021/07/16 20:58 ID: h5fy3sc

how are the adaptive triggers?

ID: h5hozob

It’s not game changing but pretty decent. Would have liked the option to increase resistance on the brakes for better modulation.

ID: h5hyyvv

I think it's a game changer with a pad, makes the feel of the traction under the car so much better. And you can turn the triggers up, it's buried in the setting somewhere.

ID: h5j64t1

There is a setting for the triggers, weak, medium and strong. Have you checked that out?

ID: h5i67mm

I think they change the game completely. The braking feedback once you get used to it is fucking epic.

6 : Anonymous2021/07/16 19:49 ID: h5fop3y

I’ve been playing the F1 games since the 2011 edition on PS3. The last two years the game has really hit its stride with the addition of My Team career where you can build up your own team through many seasons and experience a dynamic F1 ebb and flow with drivers moving teams and teams fortunes rising and falling with time. Or if you prefer you can join an existing team as a driver in a more traditional career mode format. The career mode is really the draw of the series at this point and while last year there were some kinks with its implementation (development goals during practice being near impossible to achieve etc.) I’ve noticed less of that nonsense this year, it’s more refined. My wishlist item is a more advanced design platform for car liveries, your selections at the start are pretty limited even if you bought the deluxe edition of the game as I did. I’m the type that wants to dig in and create something really interesting but at the moment there’s just preset liveries with color change settings.

The big headline feature this year is the more filled out story mode, I haven’t dug into this much yet but from what I’ve seen it’s pretty much what you’d expect, a bit cheesy and short but kinda cool for what it is. If you like sports career modes that have story elements you’d probably enjoy it for what it is.

Driving feels really great on the pad, I haven’t invested in a PS5 wheel but my big recommendation for using pad is to play around with the calibration settings and increase the throttle linearity and brake linearity somewhat, makes for a more forgiving pad experience IMO as it’s more difficult to be extremely refined with your braking and accelerating.

My only gripe is the removal of classic cars, they were a cool addition last year and I found myself spending more time than I thought I would running laps in the classic cars competing with ghosts. It’s a shame to lose them.

Overall the series has become extremely refined in the last years and the feeling on track is exactly as it should be, AI seems to be pretty damn racy this year. They will fight you through corners and do less stupid shit during practice and qualy. If you’re interested in racing sims at all I say go for it.

ID: h5jaj5d

It’s honestly crazy to see how much the series has evolved and how mainstream it’s become given I’ve been following since early 2014

7 : Anonymous2021/07/16 17:04 ID: h5f1iw5

"Hardcore" Gamer completely missing the point of an iterative title. They sound the opposite of hardcore.

ID: h5ka5nq

unfortunately a lot of "hardcore" gamers are completely out of touch when it comes to sports games.

ID: h5kaypx

Anyone self-proclaimed "hardcore" gamer I've ever met usually doesn't have a clue and is as basic as they come.

8 : Anonymous2021/07/17 01:20 ID: h5gty0r

I picked up F1 a few years ago just for the sake of it because it looked interesting. I love watching F1 races but never looked into the video games. I’m also a GT fan.

I’ve enjoyed it ever since and the last two years it has really improved.

9 : Anonymous2021/07/16 23:06 ID: h5geans

I can’t wait for this game to go on sale, or PS+. I’ve always enjoyed the F1 games but not enough to pay $60 for it.

10 : Anonymous2021/07/16 17:25 ID: h5f4koy

This is the first F1 game I’ve ever played and I have been really enjoying it.

The story mode was short, but I just looked at it as a long tutorial.

I’m excited to start a 2 player career with my buddy, this weekend.

ID: h5fzd4p

2-player career with a friend? How’s that work? Online session racing in the same race weekend? Sounds awesome if so.

ID: h5g1y2t

Honestly, not sure yet lol. I’ll report back after we start it up!

ID: h5grgwh

Yep, you can choose to be on the same team or be on different teams, but you play the whole career together and do r&d and weekends together.

11 : Anonymous2021/07/16 17:56 ID: h5f8xwi

My impressions so far:

- Plays surprisingly well with a controller, though I'm not in love with the adaptive trigger implementation

- Braking Point seems a bit half baked. The first scenario is "win the F2 championship", and then you're in F1. I seem to remember they had a young driver test in the last F1 game I played, which would've been nice to get a feel for the new machinery

- With a wheel and all assists off, it's very challenging – curbs are absolutely deadly, and I can very rarely catch a slide

I'm keen to spend a lot more time with it over the weekend and see if I can get more comfortable with the wheel.

ID: h5fe783

The first scenario is "win the F2 championship", and then you're in F1.

Aka Marzespin's story minus the winning.

ID: h5j4wkl

Kerbs are way too slippery. They're not like that in real life. Also, how the hell do they fuck up a track that has been in the game every year for almost a decade with no layout changes? The "bump" in austria before the hairpin/turn 3 has never been there. They desperately need to start laser scanning the tracks if they want to be taken seriously.

ID: h5fm9b2

Any recommendations for a wheel for someone who's Never had one?

ID: h5fnrqy

A Logitech G29 or a thrustmaster t300 are typically the most commonly recommend starter level wheels.

ID: h5fmxsg

Depends entirely on budget. Thrustmaste

for entry level, Fanatec if you have the money to spend. Fanatec just announced a partnership with Gran Turismo, so I assume their new CSL DD will get a PlayStation-compatible version soon.

ID: h5hsdah

G29 is the best "starter" wheel and set up. It can be pricey (i paid £240 with the gear stick attachment)

You can pick up cheap wheels but they do not have forcefeed back and that is something you need to experience.

12 : Anonymous2021/07/16 20:05 ID: h5fqxvv

Very fun game. I have been used to GT Sport for a few years and this is the only other racing game I've picked up (other than Wreckfest). It took a while to get used to driving the beast of a car that F1 cars are but got the hang of it and really enjoyed it.

13 : Anonymous2021/07/16 21:20 ID: h5g118k

Very different to gt sport imo. But if you're an f1 fan definitely recommended.

14 : Anonymous2021/07/16 21:47 ID: h5g4goh

iv been playing it 3 days early (digital deluxe) and finished the new "store" mode already. wish that part was longer, but the rest is good. having fun but its also the same f1 lol

15 : Anonymous2021/07/16 23:43 ID: h5gipdf

Wow. Surprisingly high scores!

Will pick up this at a sale.

16 : Anonymous2021/07/17 00:57 ID: h5grfyh

Hows the multiplayer scene?

17 : Anonymous2021/07/17 16:37 ID: h5j4ens

Man, quality mode is screen tearing like a mofo 🙁 also, replays are 30fps (or even less?). Pretty disappointing. They definitely need to address the screen tearing
