I’m downloading a game and watching something on crunchyroll, then closed the app to let the game download faster and it’s stuck closing the app… it’s looping as if it’s making progress but it’s not letting me change the screen or use my controller to do anything. Nothing is happening but it’s not “frozen”. This has happened several times. I have only been able to stop it by holding the power button until it force shuts off the console. Upon turning it back on it goes into safe mode and explains critical errors that happened the last time I powered off.
Please help with this.. I really do not want to brick this dime…. -
Honestly the state of the Crunchyroll app on the PS5 is so bad they should have it pulled from the store until Crunchyroll fixes it. Because it keeps causing system lock ups and crashes. After hard resetting my PS5 over this bricking app I just won't use it.
It was a real pain in the butt to recover from it too. Thought I was going to end up calling Sony over it.

Had this problem every time I used the app, had to just use something else to watch Crunchyroll. Wasn't worth the stress of having to hard reset my PS5.

Others are having the same problem. Google Crunchyroll crashing on PS5 and their are complaints about this issue on Crunchyroll reddit. Don't know if there are any solution on the subreddit, but won't hurt to check.

I have this problem with Crunchyroll as well as a few other apps
Hulu sometimes YouTube sometimes Any ps4 game like overwatch for example
If I close the game there’s a 50/50 shot the system freezes at the close game screen.
I have a theory it has to do with other programs running in the background but have no way of really testing that
I really don’t wanna contact Sony if I don’t have to. I have no idea how long it takes to get a repair or if anything is even wrong or if the apps are just not updated well.
I managed to get around it, for me I think the unexplained problematic part was background download/refresh/upload while trying to close app. I simply paused the downloads I had in the back, made sure nothing else was open, and nothing else draining the WiFi and it seems to be a fix…. Hope that helps you, I haven’t personally had this problem with any other app or game however.
I have this issue when not downloading anything
This has happened to me about 6 times. Had to unplug my ps5 while on. I’m stubborn and want to watch anime so I still use it. I find that it acts weird whenever I move around the menu fast so I pick a show beforehand and start it so that won’t happen again.
Ive noticed too that it’s when I use the system too quickly.
I wouldn’t unplug, press and hold the console power button until it shuts off instead.
Why not just use the restart option in the ps5 power menu? That will force it to close and then you will be good.
But yeah, this is on crunchyroll to fix.
I’ve tried that, no matter how: when my PS5 is downloading something and I try to power off or close from any approach it bricks the closing application screen until I hold the power button until it feels like the console basically has a stroke. I do not want to power off if I’m downloading something either…. This is only with Crunchyroll btw.
Scratch that. My guy. You just saved me brother, gave me an idea: pause my download, then close CR app. and it did it. I can resume download and it’s working no reset. I feel almost stupid for not thinking of this the last time… or maybe they patched the issue? Dunno but I’m in the clear! Hahaha I’m too stoked about this simply making sense like it should.

PS5’s software is just so crap and buggy. I can’t believe it’s been almost a year and they released like two updates.
There are multiple AAA titles I own that might be slightly outdated ( Assassins Creed Syndicate, Middle Earth SOM, and probably other AC games from what I’ve read) but they are damned good games. And yet they are soooo bugged out on PS5 STILL
EDIT: ( This instance I was downloading a game and opened CR then realized those two things have caused me multiple fatal crashes. I stayed in CR watching anime after I posted this because I was hoping for a solution and, “Ladies and gentlemen, we found him.” )
Yeah I have straight up stopped using Crunchyroll on my PS5 because of this. Has happened twice, had to manually pull the power on my PS5 both times. Not fuckin' around with Crunchyroll anymore unless they patch and specifically announce addressing this.
I just watch Crunchyroll on my smart TV app instead.
It happened to me the other day, same thing and same Crunchyroll app, and same feeling of anxiety. Press the power button on the console and continue pressing it for 15-20 seconds until it powers off. The time for holding the button was really long and I feared for a moment it couldn't be powered off...
Tbh crunchyroll app sucks. The app has one job and is to stream anime which it is terrible at. The web browser on the ps4 does a better job streaming anime from kickass$&@&$$.ru site than the whole crunchy roll app. The app sucks in all platforms including phones, tablets, roku and smart tvs. Cruncy devs need to update it with better ui. My suggestion is to not use it and try running cruncyroll Website from the browser. I am honestly not sure where the web browser is on the ps5. I never had time to explore the entire UI.
Well, you can't find it because it doesn't exist.
Crunchyrolls app has always been trash, even on PS4.
Personally, I recommend just investing in a Firestick or Chromecast (I went for CC) and just casting it from your phone.
It’s not just Crunchyroll the Funimation app is also garbage on ps5..strangely both apps actually work on my Xbox
