Crazy how well this game has aged

Since I’m a wuss I played as Jill on Very Easy difficulty and still got killed by Cerberuses two times. Also screw that Winding Corridor on the East side of the first floor.

Also, how the hell did Wesker manage to imprison Chris in the lab if they were all running to the Mansion together?

Still had fun though, especially after getting Richard’s shotgun.

Presumably when character X gets sent through the dining room, character Y walks in the front door, and is immediately kidnapped at gunpoint by Wesker, hence why he's gone as you get back.

Easy or not, the only thing that matters is you played through to the end and enjoyed it.

Did it live up to the hype for you?

It very much did. I’ve seen walkthroughs for both the original 1996 one and the 2002 one, and I like the increased creep factor this one gives. While the fixed camera angle isn’t my ideal scenario, it added to the tension since I’d go around a corner and suddenly see a zombie I didn’t expect to be there.

My only issue is the writing. The overall plot and lore behind the scenes with the documents and such were very intriguing (“Itchy, Tasty” and George Trevor’s diary come to mind) and I very much liked those. However I felt that since the game was basically a (greatly) reskinned version of the original all they did with the dialogue is give it a “smooth” sound without adding any new character nuances or proactiveness to the situation. (Example: “Chris is our old partner ya know” becomes “Chris and I go back a long way,” but nothing is expanded upon with this). I guess I just expected the characters to say something more in depth than “I’m gonna look for clues” when over half the STARS are missing or dead and they’re surrounded by zombies.

I still very much enjoyed the gameplay. Having to decide how and when to use my ammunition/kerosene in situations was very tense as was item management with so few spaces. I’m in the middle of my Chris walkthrough now applying lessons I learned from the Jill run and having a blast. I love the flash grenades.

(Back to the writing, can we just take a moment to say how ridiculous it was for Barry to draw his gun on Jill, Jill disarming him and demanding answers, and then after the Lisa Trevor fight they forget it happened?)

Hahah fair points. It’s definitely my favorite but I agree, they could have expanded on the dialog. Especially since a lot of lore is either assumed or not even in game.

They did add some parts to the game like Lisa Trevor but I feel like that would have been put to better use on more clarification of already existing story.

But overall the setting and story is my favorite. If you’ll excuse me I think I’m going to play that now…

Aaaw I wish I could play this game for the first time again. The first time where it's all a mystery and you had the sensation of discovery and dread. After many playthroughs and speedruns you'll know the game by heart and you'll never get this sensation again so enjoy it while it lasts. Best survival horror RE imo.
