Still to this day.

Speak for yourself. I'll sweep concentric circles around you. You're mine.

ID: hdnwb09

You're mine.

Aw thx bby <3

ID: hdnxoaz

You're welcome BloomSugarMyMan.

ID: hdnl4ml

*gets bomb on first click

ID: hdnlcsc

Not to be "that guy", but the first click is always guaranteed to be bomb free

EDIT* I was only referring to Microsoft minesweeper and never considered knockoff versions which this may not apply to. Also as pointed out, versions before Vista set up the board pre-click instead of post-click, so you could fail on that. It's been so long since 3.1/95 that I forgot about that.*

The last two squares…

ID: hdo68bf

I have about a 20% win rate.. but i can win as long as it's not something like 50000x50000 tiles.

3 : Anonymous2021/09/20 23:02 ID: hdng9ks

The numbers on the tiles tell you how many bombs are near it. You now know how to play minesweeper

ID: hdo4ux5

There aren't too many games that can be explained in a simple sentence. Minesweeper is one of those games.

ID: hdochdo

Ski Free, you ski down a hill, avoid obstacles, and get eaten by a snowman.

ID: hdo5eqd

How many squares counts as near?

ID: hdo5te1

Touching either one of the sides or corners.

ID: hdo7b9o

Anything touching orthogonally or diagonally.

ID: hdoc0gb

The crazy thing is that it literally tells you how to play the game in the options. I couldn’t figure it out as a kid though. I didn’t actually learn how to play it until high school.

ID: hdo5ijt

Basically this.

And they also give you some assist tools like the flags and left+right click for 8 tiles clearances

ID: hdodv5r

And if you put flags on enough tiles around the number you can double click the number to clear any remaining tiles, however that can lead to a loss if you incorrectly mark tiles

4 : Anonymous2021/09/20 22:09 ID: hdn9biq

Actually, I’m pretty good at it

ID: hdncny2

Yeah. I could take out an expert in like...a certain amount of time I no longer remember...but it was kinda quick.

Edit: I'm gonna say about 3 mins. I haven't played in years and I just brought it up and I was forced into a few 50/50 calls with about a quarter of the field left at 178 seconds.

ID: hdneiy4

My personal records back in the day:

*Beginner: 5 seconds

*Intermediate: 40 seconds

*Expert: 143 seconds

haha that was exactly the first thing i thought "speak for yourself kid"

ID: hdnlmbq

Minesweeper is probably the thing I miss the most since I switched away from Windows.

There are Minesweeper clones in Linux and Mac, but it's just not the same.

5 : Anonymous2021/09/20 22:00 ID: hdn86l7

Its super easy to learn tho

ID: hdnwv1o

Yeah, wtf. Third-graders can figure out how to play Minesweeper.

ID: hdo4vnp

When I got windows 95 for the first time I was 10 and I was obsessed with minesweeper. So yeah, you're spot on. I'm more confused by this post than anything.

6 : Anonymous2021/09/21 00:24 ID: hdnqngz

It's... not hard??

ID: hdodb49

Until the inevitable 50/50

ID: hdogx6j

You're not playing true Minesweeper until you hit the 8 tile on your first click.

ID: hdoob2v

Always kills an expert run I have. Never fails

7 : Anonymous2021/09/20 23:04 ID: hdngj3v

That isn’t even a screenshot without a lot of obvious moves. No idea what the point is here.

ID: hdojp38

Right. Even the screenshot is clearly showing the player knows what they’re doing.

ID: hdovp7i

I glanced at it and can see at least 10 spots to place a flag down. I stopped counting after 10 because Jesus man put some flags down.

8 : Anonymous2021/09/20 22:47 ID: hdne9tw

Minesweeper was an easy game to understand and play. I played it A LOT during my junior and senior years as an undergraduate in college in the mid-1990s, just before the internet came around.

ID: hdnpmzw

It's easy because the games that came with Windows were supposed to teach you how to use a mouse. Minesweeper for right clicking, Solitaire for click and drag, etc.

ID: hdo2f7j

And ski free was to teach you that no matter how good you are in life, a snowman will eat you.

ID: hdo08pd

Holy shit how did i not realize this.

9 : Anonymous2021/09/21 00:14 ID: hdnp9cj

Every number signifies the amount of bombs that touches it. For example, 2 means that two bombs are touching it. If the square was 3, then three bombs are touching it.

A square that is “touching” includes a 1x1 area around said square, with diagonals included.

Honestly the gameplay is logic and luck. Don’t worry, I’m still shit at it.

10 : Anonymous2021/09/20 22:22 ID: hdnb121

Just don’t hit the mines… It’s that easy

ID: hdocpcc

This is mineblowing information

11 : Anonymous2021/09/20 22:18 ID: hdnajx5

I have OG minesweeper on my phone and I’m pretty good at it.

12 : Anonymous2021/09/20 23:01 ID: hdng2i2

I see at least 5 open moves.

ID: hdnishp

With the exception of the exposed 3 and 4 at the bottom right, the entirety of the exposed edges is known.

ID: hdnjaue

Ha.... you're actually quite right. This is a depressing picture for the title.

13 : Anonymous2021/09/21 02:51 ID: hdo9nkm

It's super easy, barely an inconvenience

14 : Anonymous2021/09/21 02:42 ID: hdo8glo

There was a help button that explained it. But even if you didn't read that it wasn't that hard to figure out.

The number tells you how many bombs are adjacent to that square.

Thats it. Thats literally the entire game.

15 : Anonymous2021/09/21 02:43 ID: hdo8ktj

This is one of those games so intuitive, so easy to pick up, I really resent the idea that "nobody knew how to play this game".

Number = how many mines are touching that square. That's it. Thats literally the entire game.

16 : Anonymous2021/09/21 03:07 ID: hdobk6b

Speak for yourself, minesweeper was the bomb

17 : Anonymous2021/09/20 23:15 ID: hdnhxy7

Wait, what? It's literally just a logic puzzle lol. The number represents how many bombs are touching that square. That's basically it (til you get caught in a logic trap every now and again...)

18 : Anonymous2021/09/20 22:11 ID: hdn9ktq

Wait, you dont get how it works? Keep that to yourself IRL, just saying.

19 : Anonymous2021/09/21 02:31 ID: hdo71nu

Literally everyone knew how to play minesweeper.
