Inverted controls gang strikes again
ID: hiv0g9hID: hiv8q31I forget what game I used to play that had that, was quite fun, I remember green polygons that may have been military.
ID: hiw79gzGoldeneye 007
ID: hivxnfbReminds me of the good ol Golden Eye days then jumping in to Halo.
ID: hiv0mgrso kinda like a rc plane control
ID: hivzrioSW:Squadrons has some kind of funky control setup like that.
ID: hiuq7smNo one expects the Inverted Inquisition
ID: hivpiswI started out on pc and the only games that used a joystick were flying games or mech warrior games. Mostly in 3rd person. It made sense to me to do inverted. Now I can’t go without inverted, I just delete a game if inverted isn’t an option.
ID: hivz6pnI'm always inverted. I miss the feature from Xbox 360 where you could set inverted look in your profile and it would automatically make the settings change within the game.
ID: hivylp1I play inverted with a controller, and "normal" with a mouse. Confuses the fuck out of my friends, but it makes sense to my hands.
ID: hivqsrvThen all the arcade games got rid of buttons on the left... wtf.. so I had to criss cross hands to play - like old school inverted.
ID: hivskjkInverted gang representing!!
ID: hiv1kjeThere’s tens of us!
ID: hivmj0vInverted all the way..it makes more sense.
I like to think of it as if the character in an FPS has a joystick stuck to the back of their head.
You push it up and their head would look down, and vice versa.
ID: hivyxxkInverted with stick/toggle, non-inverted with mouse. This is the way.
ID: hivns5hExactly

Halo probably isn’t the best thumbnail to use as one of the first things you do as soon as you start the game is choose inverted or not, and that was even back when it wasn’t the norm
ID: hiwzkcaThey do it in such a smart way too. They tell you to look up, and then no matter if you move your mouse up or down, it will look up, this sets your inversion setting.
If it wasn't for the pop up that follows it would be pretty immersive

Wasn't inverted the norm when fps weren't on consoles? I didn't notice "inverted" until I played an fps on a console.
It's like old school arcade games. Back in the day there were buttons on the left and right of the joystick. So I picked right hand on stick, left hand for buttons. Then all the arcade games got rid of buttons on the left... wtf.. so I had to criss cross hands to play - like old school inverted.
ID: hivfkz1Yeah back in the day of Goldeneye, Timesplitters and a few others the normal controls were what's called inverted today.
ID: hivnlcdYeah, inverted was the default for ages. It was the good old days, when non inverted were the exception, not the default
ID: hiwflcgIt wasn't just on PC either. Inverted controls were still the norm during the PS1/PS2 era. I recently picked up a second-hand PS2 and booted up Prince of Persia and it threw me off because the look controls were inverted. Fortunately I played a lot of older games as a kid and I can get used to both.
For whatever reason during the Xbox 360/PS3 era the controls got swapped around. Not really sure why though because a lot of people had to relearn them

Inverted controllers are normally for flight controls
ID: hiv3jw9Not shooters though
ID: hivi6ggI need to do it on any controller based game.
-
Inverted y axis is the only way to go
-
I'm only used to reverse up-down controls for flight stuff and I can only fly in-game planes if it is inversed. Not because I played a lot of flight games but because one of my childhood games had an intro sequence where you are in a plane with reverse up down, so it jsut ingrained into my memory more.

I wonder if there was a study, that they discovered left-handed people preferred inverted controls. Naw, I think it has to do with the early games people play. Nintendo players would almost certainly prefer standard, while those grew up on early pc flight/space sims would prefer inverted. For me if its not inverted its back-assward.
ID: hiw2lv2Why would left handed people want inverted controls? I have never liked inverted controls as a left handed person.
-
Holy shit this made me realize that it’s been so long since I’ve gamed on a PC that I don’t remember which one I relate to here…fuuuck
-
You shouldn't be using a mouse to control a flight sim.
ID: hiuvlapDON'T TEACH ME HOW TO CRASH!!!!i know already
ID: hiuxfbxWar thunder hears you. War thunder isnt listening.
-
I invert. IDGAF.
-
Didn't Halo 3 autodetect this?
"Please look at this light"
holds light above screen
ID: hiwfjabEvery Halo does right? Always something look at and waits for your prompt and then asks you if it got it right?
ID: hiwreuuCE, 2, 3, ODST, and 4 start the game with tutorials like that
-
Wait, you people move your mouse up to move your camera up ?
ID: hiuzzqhYou don’t? What are you, backwards or something?
-
Your mouse is the characters head. Push=down Pull= up
ID: hiv3o88So when you move the mouse left, your character turns to the right?
ID: hiuqis0Heathen
ID: hiur6a1False ! I am one of the first people's of FPS I began this journey on Wolfenstein and Doom and will solder on until my death.
ID: hiv55osHuh. With control sticks I'm definitely an invert player, but with the mouse I'm not. Didn't really register this until now.
-
Inverted is life. Imagine a knob attached to the back of the character's head - you are controlling the knob.
-
Saying you never play inverted is really just outing yourself as young or missed the OG great shooters.
-
I hate when I go to fly in games and up is up. never crash so fast in my life.
-
I can’t stand inverted controls for character and ground vehicles, but I need to use inverted controls for flying or I plummet to the ground.
-
tbh I always prefer non inverted even when flying in games, if I wanna go up I'm pointing the stick up not down lol

Flipping stick directions is something I can handle; it’s like flying, nbd. However, one control scheme I see fairly often, but I never hear people talk about, is Legacy, where left stick is forward-back and yaw, and right stick is strafing and pitch. It’s far more disorienting than simply inverting directions.
