The best solution to this type of stuff is usually to have a "personal space" radius within your characters avatar. This really only works for social hub games though

I'm going to preface this by saying I have not read any of those articles beyond the headline, but based on those headlines, isn't what's being described sexual harrassment, not sexual assault? Sexual assault is physical by legal definition, right? So unless the definitions change with the advent/rise of the metaverse, instances like these and others would have to be classified as sexual harassment imo.

A lot of people do play these games because of the bizarre bullshit and lack of boundaries, and thus don't mind when they get no boundaries either. Of course it's also perfectly understandable that other people want to get a VR social experience or whatever without getting virtually groped.
Honestly, this is one of those things that does not need to be, and hopefully never becomes a real controversy. It's very easy for the devs to either announce what rules are and are not enforced so that everyone knows what they're getting into, or better yet to just cater to both crowds with separate servers.
