If you think it's bad with a random quest giver, how about the Animal Crossing neighbor you spent the last 4 RL months with before bidding a fond tearful goodbye to? Also literally says they'll never forget you. You meet them on a mystery island the next day and they act identically to anyone you met for the first time.
