- Ever miss these loading screens of opening a door? The uneasiness of what you are about to step into.
-
That moment you open the door in the back of the RPD and the zombies showed up in the loading screen surprised the shit outta me back in the day.
ID: htnho7cID: htnoorcThe thing with the Cerberus was that it was the first Resident Evils jumpscare ever. It was REALLY unexpected.I played it around one year after launch and before the internet was like it is today, I went in completely blind. I just knew that RE was a good horror game so, to this day, that was the best scare that RE ever gave me. The zombies on the loading screen were also amazing though.
ID: htnylrgTheres a a lil detail leading up to it that i love.
In that room, you hear a loud crash outside followed by zombie moans. If you open that door after you hear that, they come through the door.
I always thought that was so cool, especially back then.
-
Wish we had an option to turn them off in the HD remasters on consoles
-
well 50/50, after the third, or fourth door you are done with the "nostalgia" and wish you could skip it.
ID: htn8jsgI thought the same thing when playing the REMake for the first time. After the first few door it got annoying because I have a somewhat beefy pc with an ssd, so there’s really no need for it especially with all the backtracking you must do.
-
You clearly don't own a Switch.
ID: htmaaeuI do have a Switch. I prefer to play RE on a PlayStation.
ID: htmmg42It is good for retaining sanity.
to answer your question, sure, I miss it, but I also miss classic RE in general and that's only part of the package.
ID: htmm4xeSome of the loading times in RE:0 were atrocious. The payoff is a beautiful rendered background, but it makes backtracking such a chore.
ID: htnxvo8Does it take longer or something? Is the animation slower?
-
They are great for the first playthrough, they really add to the tension. After that tho i wish you could skip them. They really hurt replayability. That's why the RE Engine games are so fun to speedrun... you don't have to waste time.
-
No, I only play version where I can skip them. They are mostly just a waste of time.
-
As a kid, I thought these were absolutely terrifying. Now, truth be told, they are kinda annoyances. Nostalgia makes up for them a bit, but not enough for me to advocate them returning to the game
-
Nostalgically yes, technically, especially at these eye blinking fast loading times thanks to capabilities of SSD on PS5, HELL NO.
-
Definitely. (Atleast if I was playing a classic fixed camera game, wouldn’t make sense for a remake or the newer games)
-
The door sound effects are singed into my brain, along with every other sound effect lol.
-
"Please don't let there be something right on the other side" was my chant everytime because no matter how many times I play these I always forget
-
I liked them for a while, especially when going into a new area, then they got kind of annoying when I got lost, then they became tolerable. For me RE7 being in first person brought these transitions back in the best way, opening the door in the perspective of those transitions but in my own rythem, opening then slowly when I'm fearful and fast when I'm running away or towards something. Other than that if I'm playing the OGs I'll go with versions that have the option to skip these, like RE DS
-
Yeah man those were the days. The developer got the idea of Resident Evil from opening his kitchen door and wondering if there could be monsters on the other side. True story
-
I have no nostalgia for the doors because I didn’t even play RE Remake for the first time until fairly recently, so not even a little bit.
-
They were nice for the time, but they really needed to mix it up. Like have a zombie pop and try to bite you. They almost did this in RE2 on the B scenario where you try to go back to the back parking lot from the storage shed.
Needed to be expanded on from there.
-
that door was awesome to 16 yr old me. It was these doors that clued me into the game loading new data. I would hear the cd spin up inside my playstation. So then whenever I would play any other game and I would hear the cd drive spin up, I knew something was about to go down/surprise me.
-
I have a nostalgic connection to the open door sequence. As I believe it adds to the tension of exploring new areas. But once you have to start back tracking (ESPECIALLY in 0) it gets old fast.
-
These door animations are interesting the 1st times. But then it gets annoying really fast. I understand back then it was needed to load in the new area. But I don't understand why they brought it into Re1 HD aswell. Show Animation of a new door once and then leave it at that. It just get tedious especially when you are new and have to backtrack a lot.
However, don't remove them completely. There is a charm to it. Just reduce it to once per door.
-
You only miss them until after the fourth door. Then it becomes "HURRY THE FUCK UP!". Not adding skippable door animations to the current port of REmake is the biggest missed opportunity of that game.
-
I love that in the Jill sandwich scene the camera POV is lower to show that you’re crawling through lol
-
Kinda
-
Even though I love the animation I wish we could skip them in the remasters for remake and zero.
Also imo they could have build in this animations for 1-2 doors as an easter egg in the new REs.
For example. Imagine this animation when you enter the RPD the first time through the main doors in the RE2 remake. And the camera pans over your back like in the original. Would have been morr hype.
Or RE7 when you enter the main hall in the baker mansion.
Or RE8 when you enter the castle.

I think it's honestly a better vintage scare than the window Cerberus from RE1.
In gameplay you kind of expect things to happen in a monster infested environment, but loading screens? You've had an entire game and a bit of accepting them as a brief moment of safety where it's just you, a model of a door and the empty black void...and now here's a complete betrayal of that trust.
