- "Pokémon Legends Arceus is restricted by the Switch's hardware."

BOTW would have been a better comparison pic. Pokemon is running an open world. Luigi's Mansion is NOT that. I still think Pokemon could have looked better just looking at BOTW.
ID: hvtzxreID: hvu0oh6[removed]
ID: hvu0joiPlus BotW was a real „open world“ and not big sub areas
-
A more apt comparison would be Monster Hunter Rise or Breath of the Wild, considering that Luigi's Mansion is comprised of small rooms that by nature have less strain on processor power.
But yeah, Game Freak could've put a little more effort in the graphics department even still.
ID: hvtwlnsMonster hunter rise is surprisingly good looking. I've been playing it on the switch for a couple weeks. Never have any hiccups and the support is consistent with all other platforms.
I would say BOTW was held back by the switch but it made it work and it still looks good.
ID: hvtxl9mBreath of the Wild was actually held back by the Wii U, as it needed to launch on that platform as well.
ID: hvu3ya8monster hunter rise is super well designed and uses every trick in the book to make things look good while running well. there is so much that if you take it one by one just looks awful but where it is in the world you would never be able to tell. so as a whole it ends up looking really good.
ID: hvu59qzMonster Hunter Rise is a perfect example of art direction carrying the limitations of the hardware. Its far below the standard that World set, but it looks great regardless because of that direction.
ID: hvtwwqdI feel like a very direct comparison would be Xenoblade Chronicles 2 - it's a 3D open world game with roaming enemies you can fight in the overworld and it still manges to look amazing. And it came out about 5 years ago on the Switch, PLA has no excuse IMO
ID: hvu1l90If I remember correctly, monolith actually helped the botw dev team a lot with the open world aspect of the game given their insight and expertise from their previous games. When I heard of game freak's plans for both sword/shield and legends arceus I was kinda hoping they would do the same.
ID: hvtxo5vXenoblade chronicles was originally a wii game and still looks stunning :/
ID: hvtxg1wEven Xenoblade 1 on the Wii looked better in the landscape department than legends of Arceus. (Sure, characters were scuff, but that's more art direction than technical limitations as far as I know)
ID: hvu44r7Everytime i see xeno anything makes me want a xenogears ff7 remake style remake.
ID: hvtxln9Luigi’s Mansion also has a fixed camera angle which means it can used baked in lighting and other tricks to reduce computation needed
ID: hvtwhieAnd also The Witcher 3.
ID: hvtx0stEven dragon quest xi.. that game looks fantastic and isn’t jammed full of assets
ID: hvtxljxXenoblade would probably be the best example since they both have a similar open world (multiple smaller open maps)
Xenoblade chronicles looks gorgeous and was made for the wii :/
ID: hvtx8ifShin Megami Tensei V is also a great example. It’s also a monster catching game that looks significantly better in terms of visuals.
ID: hvtzhu0I’ve heard that one has framerate issues though.
-
Can’t wait to see Breath of the Wild 2
ID: hvtquvaAt this rate though, it will be optimized to run on the GameCube.
ID: hvtyyj3And only use like 6 GB

While I am having a good time with it, I will admit Game Freak really did drag their feet with it. With news of acquisitions in the air, I would really root for Nintendo just grabbing up GameFreak to really give them a fighting chance at making something “next gen” in appearance.
ID: hvtn1r4Yeah, I'm tending to think Gamefreak is making excuses for their inexperience working on HD games. Heck Pokemon Snap looks incredible.
ID: hvu49vzGame freak is straight up burned out on Pokemon.
ID: hvtp633Pokemon is literaly the most profitable franchise in the world. They have all the resources they need, corporate just needs to get out of its own way. They are stuck in that yearly cycle of the new games, merch, anime, and toys all coming out at the sane time, that just doesn't leave time for proper game development unless they have a big enough team to have like three games being worked on at once.
ID: hvtw9ozThey have no reason to change their ways as long as people keep throwing cash at them for the same old recycled filler.
ID: hvtjsqvI thought Nintendo owned game freak
ID: hvtkxtzNope, Game Freak is independent.
The Pokemon Company is however a joint venture with Nintendo and Creatures, each owning part of the Pokemon franchise throught the company.

Meanwhile Zelda BOTW and Xenoblade Chronicles 2: laughs in almost 5 years ago on the same hardware.
ID: hvtjntcDont forget that BOTW even ran on Wii U and it still looked so much better
ID: hvtkiqcBotW was basically designed for the Wii U, is my understanding (the game and platform released simultaneously). It has better performance on the Switch but only marginally so. Not that this detracts from your point, just adding context.
Edit: apparently my writing was unclear, the Switch and BotW released simultaneously. My point being that if BotW came out 2-3 years after the switch’s release you’d expect it to be optimized for Switch, not Wii U. In this case BotW was designed with the Wii U in mind.
ID: hvtjx8bPorts are laughing too; (to name a few)
Skyrim
The Witcher 3
Warframe
ID: hvtkio9And Skyrim is from 2011 and still looked better on significantly weaker hardware back then
-
BOTW probably suffered somewhat due to being developed for the Wiiu and the switch, probably more optimisation could have been done if it was switch only from start to finish....and it looks FAR superior.
-
I mean, they definitely could’ve done better, but also you gotta give better comparisons. 1 room in a non open world game is completely different. A better comparison would’ve been Monster Hunter or Legend of Zelda BotW
-
Not that this is a bad example by any means,
but Breath of the Wild came out on the fucking Wii U...
ID: hvtnuy0Holy shit I forgot about that!
-
Compare it with another actual open world game, like Breath of the Wild
ID: hvtzct9Or Monster Hunter
-
This is an unfair comparison since it’s one room, best thing would be to compare to other oooen world games that look waaaay better than Pokemon
-
The core gameplay is fun, but the final product feels more like a proof of concept or alpha version of a game than an actual, polished $60 game. It being open world means you wouldn't get LM3 fidelity, but they certainly could have done better than what they did. Sometimes when you are flying there is Superman 64 levels of fog and pop-in. It's awful.
ID: hvtrzrpProbably more fair comparisons would be either Mario Odyssey or Breath of the Wild. Both of them look fantastic. They’re not perfect by any means but the amount of things that pop in on Arceus is just not good
ID: hvu1x3iI'm still wondering what sort of dark rituals they had to perform to get Mario Odyssey to look as good as it does and run at a steady 60 fps.
ID: hvtnvz8Oh yeah it often comes off as indie / fan made, and not made by the company that owns the biggest media franchise by revenue
-
Kinda a bad comparison? Isn’t Luigi’s Mansion a super curated, linear experience? So they can afford to embellish the heck out of it. I might be wrong. Haven’t played it.
ID: hvtq5oqYeah, it's a bit apples to oranges. Rendering a small room with 30-100 objects isn't the same as rendering a biome out to the horizon with potentially dozens of entities to keep track of and operate.
That said, Arceus still dropped the ball on optimization and quality.

Astral Chain, BoTW, Xenoblade 2, even Warframe all look great
ID: hvtrv4wAstral Chain especially. It does not get mentioned often, but that game looks FANTASTIC.

Not to mention that BotW was the launch title for the switch. It was literally the first game. You would think that games that came after should be higher fidelity but no.
