What are your favorite horror movies set at sea? (Most that I’ve found seem to have terrible reviews)

I really enjoy atmospheric horror movies with an ensemble cast, and I'm in the mood for something set at sea (which, to me, is just inherently scary in the best way). I'm curious to know what all you guys would recommend? Just about everything that I'm finding seems to have horrible reviews, both from critics and average watchers.

EDIT: No "shark movies" please.

Triangle

The rest of the movie is fine, but gotta love that opening scene of Ghost Ship

Sea Fever (2019) was fun and I feel like it's overlooked.

Seconded, I just checked this out a few days ago and really liked it!!

The Abyss

6 : Anonymous2021/03/08 02:37 ID: gq63i46

Deepstar Six

Leviathan

Harbinger Down

I liked Underwater.

Deep Rising and Sphere

❤️Deep rising! It holds a special place in my heart because I watched it all the time with my stepdad when I was little. It’s a comfort film for me. OP should def give it a shot.

I came here to rec Deep Rising!

Both of them seem to be very poorly reviewed, can I ask why you enjoyed them (no spoilers)?

Harpoon

It's not really a horror movie, but the only movie I think has more tension than The Thing is Das Boot.

‘She Beast’ was a nice little b-movie starring Carla Gugino. About the last half takes place at sea. Not much of an ensemble cast, though.

Below, Sphere and Underwater

I second Sphere. Not quite horror but definitely leaves an impact and has some intense scenes that leave the viewer saying WTF. I revisit this film at least once a year.

Below is a great call!

Anything involving Cthulhu or Dagon.

Man, I love Lovecraft’s short stories but I struggled to get through Dagon. The acting was just soooo cheesy.

In the Heart of the Sea, grim ending, based on the sinking of a whaling ship called the Essex.

15 : Anonymous2021/03/08 04:15 ID: gq6dolw

Underwater

Boat

A recent Gary Oldman movie called Mary was very underrated. i believe its in the single digits on RT.

Deep Rising. It's both scary and funny in a most entertaining way!

17 : Anonymous2021/03/08 07:59 ID: gq6uy8l

Harbinger Down has awesome special effects by the team who originally designed the unused practical effects for The Thing (2011)

Sea Fever. Triangle. Dead Calm. Leviathan. Below (submarine).

Not horror but All is Lost is a great movie all set at sea. 100% worth a watch.
