Alright, I got EW2 (XB1) as part of a lot of games on e-bay, and it sat on the shelf for like a year. I found myself between games yesterday and decided to see what it was about. I actually like the mechanics and killing the zombies/losts whatever they are is quite satisfying.
I don't understand the backstory, [It seems like the player's daughter got kidnapped and put into a computer, but is going crazy and killing everyone else connected to the computer.... and it seems like this happened before].
So I'm in Chapter 3, did the sidequest where you track down the agents who were killing civilians. Should I stop EW2 and play EW1 first? Or will the back story fill in?

I'd recommend playing or at least watching the playthrough of the first game.
There are some moments where the events of the first game are heavily referenced and knowing these events makes the second game more satysfying.
It's not mandatory to understand what's going on but in my opinion it makes the game better 🙂

I highly recommend playing EW1 first, but it's not 100% necessary. Sebastian and Juli talk about the events of the first game a lot and a lot more will make sense having played it, like who the characters are, what stem is, the beacon incident that haunts Sebastian, etc., but the overarching story in the 2nd isnt dependant on the first. I also would recommend playing Evil Within 1 first cause I personally strongly believe it to be the far better of the two games as well, for a lot of reasons at that, but thats a completely different discussion and a topic the community is pretty split on.
However since youre playing on console, be warned that the first game doesnt have autoaim for controller (as far as I know at least, I dont know about console releases but I just recently replayed 1 on steam and I didnt see any option for autoaim in the settings, just used the mouse to aim and controller for everything else), so trying to aim is gonna be miserable if you get it on console. If you have a pc that can handle it, I would encourage you to get it on steam.

Definitely yes, EW1 has the core spirit of the game in my opinion. I actually enjoyed it much more than EW2 even though it's obviously more recent and polished.

It's not necessary. I was totally engrossed in EW2 and the plot made sense.
But if you have EW1 you should play it first.

I didnt and still really enjoyed it. Its a different story with only a handful of returning characters.

Eh, I’m in the boat that playing TEW1 first will simply make you see how weak TEW2 is in terms of being a sequel (great game, horrible successor to the first game, at least from a gritty survival horror POV)

The story in the first was rather convoluted and strange, with somewhat outdated gameplay and controls. While it is a good game, it's something that I describe as a "one and done" type deal. So unless you really care about experiencing lore and story for yourself instead of through a video or such, I recommend you skip and enjoy TEW2.
ID: gp5nv88The story is deliberately ambiguous, the blanks are filled in a lot by collecting and reading all files and playing the dlcs so they are worth exploring before the 2nd game even if it is just from watching the cutscenes on youtube. The bosses in the game are amazing and the game focuses more on action than stealth. I much preferred stealth in the second game but I found the first much more satisfying when it came to combat and enemies so honestly for me both are worth playing .

No. I played EW2 first, a lot more “modern” gameplay and mechanics outweighed the slower filling in of the story.
ID: gowhuy3Oof, bad take imo. The first one has a totally different feeling but is totally unique. I love it and the characters in the story as well. It's simple and not overly complex. Hoping for a 3rd in the future that sortof combines the two previous

ID: gp1yxe5If your mind's set on playing 2 first, my one piece of advice is don't look at the last projector slide until you finish the first game. Sebastian & Julis conversation about it has one of the biggest spoilers for EW1
ID: gp5py6iYea don't skip the first game it is a masterpiece even if you get some spoilers for it playing 2 first you should still play it.
I would recommend getting the dlcs for the first game too esp if you like the character Kidman (= If you game on pc you can get the evil within 1 with dlcs super cheap during steam sales.

Yes you should play the first game but not just to fill in the blanks (you could just watch the cut-scenes on youtube for the gist of it or a playthrough to cover everything) the first game is super fun and has much better bosses and more ambience it is worth playing. The second game has much better stealth and exploration though.

Good call, I don't have it yet, but I'm sure I can get it on e-bay for cheap. I'm just going to enjoy EW2 since I've gotten farther into it since last night, and maybe order EW1. Thanks!
