Breath of the Wild is awesome.

So this is semi patient gamer. I started this game last year and got so overwhelmed with it's openness from the start that i had to put it down. Recently i was watching videos and seeing everyone's positive reviews/comments and it built me back up into playing it again.

The open world hit me, and I was up playing the game until 3AM last night and just finished freeing the first Divine Beast. I typically get overwhelmed with open world games because there's almost too much to do with some of them like the latest Assassin's Creed games. I honestly can't wait to get back into later this evening!

Still trying to understand how to craft things. I guess you can't craft armor or weapons, only food? I want to do these side quests, but I obviously don't have the equipment for it.

I saw someone call Breath of the Wild the magnum opus of Zelda games. For a very long time i've considered OoT and MM to be contesters for magnum opus, but I guess i'll have to see!

Spoilers about crafting because this is a game about discovery.

You can only craft certain weapons at certain venders. Some venders do sell armor pieces that need items as well as rupees. So that's kind of crafting.

You can upgrade your armor pieces with fairy ponds and each fairy pond you find increases how many times you can upgrade an armor piece.

You can also dye your armor sets at a certain shop.

appreciate the info. thanks again for putting the spoiler filter on too

Can this game be played without much effort towards crafting and inventory management? I absolutely hate those chore-like game mechanics and prefer adventure games to feel loose, not suffocating.

I want to do these side quests, but I obviously don't have the equipment for it.

I can only think of two major examples of this so i want to clarify just incase you're thinking of the second one.

Fetch quests "Give me 30 <item>". Ok yeah that's straight forward.

Difficult area you feel you aren't leveled up/geared up enough for. This is how the difficulty curve works. If you're good at the game you can tackle pretty much any problem with 3 hearts naked and a stick. But if you're terrible at video games like me, getting stronger with more powerful gear over time makes certain tasks easier, come back later.

I felt the same way, personally I don't like a lot of open world games so I was really turned off at the start and stopped playing for months, but then my girlfriend gave me a few tips on the mechanics. The more I played and understood, the more I loved it

Breath of the Wild is definitely one of the GOATs.

The first 10 hours were amazing. The crappy dungeons, bosses and breakable weapons are what soured me on it eventually

yeah ocarina had way better dungeons. does botw even have dungeons?

CEMU is a wiiu emulator for PC. You can play BOTW on a PC.

I’m a little frustrated with how hard I’ve bounced off of this game. I never know if I’m powerful enough to complete whatever quest I’m attempting. It’s like, “Am I missing a special ability? Maybe I need more hearts or stamina? I’ll come back to this one later.” and then repeat that for everything I come across.

That, and sword breakage made battles something I avoided and disliked.

With a few exceptions all the enemies and events scale with your power. So going out and getting a bunch more hearts won't make the game much easier.

For me the tipping point was when I started to master the mechanics, once I got the mechanics down I was able to fight previously impossible fights without a huge amount of trouble. I especially recommend getting lots of practice with the dodge and shield deflect mechanics.

once you learn how to fight guardians they’re easy. hinox become stupid ez. lynel always suck but ise your shield and run from fire

It’s terrible for many reasons and it was hard to get into, but when I built up some hearts and stamina I then had a blast going all over the world.

Though the bad parts and the tedium give me an unpleasant feeling now, if I simply hear the sound effects of the game I get uncomfortable. Weapon breaking, tedious inventory, crap dungeons.

I started this game a couple weeks ago and I love it. I’ve probably played 20 or 30 hours already. There’s so much to explore and even though there’s a lot of repetition with the climbing, fighting mostly the same enemies, and climbing, it’s still great. I could tell pretty early on that I’m going to playing this game for a while.

The only change I made was turning off breakable weapons. I know some people enjoy that but I personally wouldn’t be playing this as much or having as much fun if my weapons were still breaking every couple hours. I tried it for the first few hours and wasn’t feeling it. It’s a big issue.

This is my first Zelda game since OoT and I wouldn’t put BotW above that one yet, but they’re very different games.

I didn’t know you could do that but I’m gonna try again with this!

How do you turn weapon durability off?

I started BOTW during the pandemic too and it’s been amazing! I seriously recommend getting the DLC if you can by the way, it improved a few unbalanced things and added lots more side quests, I think (not yet done with it)

If you’re reeaallyy patient like me, I’ve doing a 1:1 day scale because I don’t have much time to play anymore — so I play one 24 hour game-day each day (24-30 mins/day depending on pauses). Makes it fun to plan on a day-to-day scale

Breath of the Wild is the only game I've played that I disagree with most of its design decisions and yet absolutely love. Damn it, this post made me want to start a third playthrough of the game.

Switch price in my country is still 500 dollars... same as base PS5. That is just unreasonable. I gave up hope on ever playing BOTW.

I guess someone probably has mentioned this by now, but you don't really need anything to acomplish whatever you wish to do in botw. The health helps, the stamina too, but you can wonder around and do side quests all day and not rescue zelda ever that you will still enjoy it. I finished the game a few years ago and a still play just to walk around and explore. The subreddit is great but I didn't join intol past half the progress to avoid story spoilers.

One suggestion if the weapon breakage annoys you to hell like it does me is to make a beeline for 11 hearts and then the Master Sword to use as a solid base weapon.

15 : Anonymous2021/03/08 04:38 ID: gq6ftb9

Agreed! And my daughter has ended up loving this game too, so it's one of the really fun activities we do together.

16 : Anonymous2021/03/08 06:38 ID: gq6pkt0

Also just started this game for the first time last week or so. Went into it blind, but I knew a lot of people have praised it.

It's got a lot of design choices I don't enjoy, especially anything that has to do with the inventory and equipment (breaking weapons, cooking) and combat feels really clunky to me (especially fighting groups). But the exploration is a blast, and a lot of the puzzles are fun! So as long as I avoid fighting enemies (because I find both the fight and upkeep that follows time consuming), it's not too bad. A 7/10 for me so far maybe
