but seriously tho the game just refers to the content as estus, it's not just the name of the flask, and the rite of kindling description (i think) says that you "collect" estus at each bonfire, so there's that. But even if you conclude that estus is basically fire, you still have to define what fire is in this world, the first flame just kind of appeared and created disparity, so you can just say it's a thing that exists, but for example the witch of izalith, who got the life soul from the first flame, has control over fire and with it can create life (the demons), so maybe fire is the essence of life in general. there's also mention by some npc (i dont recall who) that soul burns like fire when out of the body and exposed, so that could maybe line up with fire being the manifestation or essence of life, but then again the white soul referred to here is not a human's natural soul, as they took it on later mostly losing their original dark souls (humanity) so who knows. Maybe estus specifically is connected to humanity, as the bonfires depend on humanity, and the firekeepers are basically storage for tons and tons of humanity.
