RIP Iwata

A true gamer

ID: gzx252n

Not just a gamer.

ID: gzx540b

And he still coded up until his eternal peace

3 : Anonymous2021/05/29 22:46 ID: gzx2rrw

Seriously what did people dislike so much about the Wii U?

ID: gzx6v4o

Lack of third party, it was hard to code for because of the gamepad, and some people were just confused about what it was

ID: gzx7xpu

It was marketed really poorly, at least in the US. I had one and there were so many people that thought it was just an extra accessory that I got for the Wii instead of its own console.

ID: gzx6pjw

I loved it, but I do believe it was the half (and maybe necessary) step towards the switch.

ID: gzx7txg

Just the fact that it share a simiilar name with the Wii hurt it a lot, people were just tire of the Wii and having a similar name meant it might be more of the same

ID: gzx7ds6

Maybe I wasn't just as with it as I was as a child, but I had a Wii and thought it was just some kind of controller add-on ... that I wasn't really interested in buying. I think they probably could have picked a better name to avoid confusion.

ID: gzx9d23

Yeah, I think poor marketing played a big role. I thought the Wii U was an accessory for the Wii. It sounded like a gimmick rather than a revolutionary console.

ID: gzx8ajd

I loved it to, probably my favorite Nintendo console after the N64, was so cool to play Black ops 2 on the gamepad, Switch still doesn't have a shooter as good as this. Also the online was better, no friend codes, messaging and Miiverse. Problem was, that the hardware was only slightly better than the Xbox 360 and PS4 and Xbox one came out a year after the launch of the Wii u.

ID: gzx845e

What killed it for me was no real graphical jump from the Wii to the Wii U. Playstation and xbox made the Wii U feel old the day it came out.

4 : Anonymous2021/05/29 20:23 ID: gzwmjwz

Ngl i actually loved the wiiu, especially splatoon and terraria

ID: gzwsc2w

I got mine off eBay for a steal. $80, everything included. Love the WiiU.

ID: gzwtvsm

Got mine as an christmas present about a month after release. Before that i played on the wii and my 3ds XL i was a nintendo fanboy until i got an xbox 360

Well, Japan is well known for the excellent treatment of workers.

Wait, no. It isn't They're the country that prides itself on working them to death. The country that is literally collapsing demographically because people don't have time, money, or energy for family or marriage.

But hey, they didn't get blamed for WiiU. So.. win. yay.

ID: gzwuoeo

Also isn't the work place treatment of women worse than North America too when it comes to equal pay and job opportunities?

ID: gzwxabc

Dunno why you got downvoted when you're correct.

ID: gzx4bf3

Yes. One of the worst places for women among wealthy democracies. That's a huge reason for the population decline. It's so hard to just economically survive as a woman, the prospect of having kids is just beyond the pale (and generally punished by employers, making it even more difficult).

6 : Anonymous2021/05/29 22:57 ID: gzx3wj9

Let’s not forget he was also one of the reasons why the Wii U bombed. A good action but definitely more geared towards taking the blame for something he was actually responsible for

7 : Anonymous2021/05/29 21:22 ID: gzwtj2g

ID: gzwxprc

I've never seen such a satisfying video ^^

8 : Anonymous2021/05/29 22:45 ID: gzx2n5n

How did the WiiU fail? I love mine.

ID: gzx4mb1

Poor marketing and name choice.

They would have been better off calling it the Wii 2.

Too many people thought the Tablet controller was an add-on to the Wii or that you could use more than one Tablet controller. (which, technically could have been possible if a developer was careful with game graphics/resolution.)

The Wii U fixed everything I hated about the original Wii, other than dropping GameCube support, which could easily be soft modded back in with Nintendon't. (you actually just reinstall the MIOS, the GameCube firmware, which was excluded from the Wii U as the DVD drive lacked the hardware needed to load the mini GameCube disks.)

I have a Modded Wii U and its my goto for playing Wii / Wii U and GameCube titles. It is such a solid console with a fairly good library of games.

It's also great for retro emulation.

Reposting the same thing over and over

10 : Anonymous2021/05/29 20:20 ID: gzwm6or

The workers were only children after all

Can't cut pay you don't give

11 : Anonymous2021/05/29 22:46 ID: gzx2q59

I wonder if he cut his pay or his salary. Most execs make most of their money off stock options and bonuses.

12 : Anonymous2021/05/29 23:04 ID: gzx4oqz

Mario chase was so good

13 : Anonymous2021/05/29 21:00 ID: gzwqwlo

Sweet man

14 : Anonymous2021/05/29 22:46 ID: gzx2qab

Just finished the Ask Iwata book, guy was incredibly generous. Absolutely the ideal for what you would want from a corporate CEO. Basically the Mr. Rodgers of bosses.

15 : Anonymous2021/05/29 20:25 ID: gzwmu2w

Oh, I haven't seen this reposted in at least 12 hours. Good job on your restraint!

16 : Anonymous2021/05/29 21:27 ID: gzwu118

I still want a Wii U but can't find a good one under 200

ID: gzx5y4f

If youre in australia, ive got one to sell

ID: gzx8ibf

Thank you, but I'm upside down from you.

ID: gzwx5ow

You'll better buy one for $200 since it will be much more expensive in a few years

17 : Anonymous2021/05/29 22:59 ID: gzx44ix

Splatoon was one of the best online shooters ever. Wii U was flipping amazing,

18 : Anonymous2021/05/29 21:06 ID: gzwrn4u

Do you like Huey Lewis and the News?

19 : Anonymous2021/05/29 21:58 ID: gzwxkss

This is pretty typical in Japanese business culture. Not to diminish a good practice or anything, but still. Fyi.

ID: gzx0mtv

It's still refreshing to hear, especially in the games industry. Especially when Activision, as the worst offender, fire hundreds of people to just optimize the company's performance to their share holders. Meanwhile their CEO just tries to give himself more and more money despite doing nothing exceptional in his position.

20 : Anonymous2021/05/29 22:05 ID: gzwyd9y

Now that’s leadership

21 : Anonymous2021/05/29 22:59 ID: gzx43mq

Take notes Activision Blizzard

ID: gzx67gv

Also Capcom. I'm currently boycotting all Capcom games because they made their workers come in throughout covid ...

22 : Anonymous2021/05/29 21:57 ID: gzwxi84

23 : Anonymous2021/05/29 22:15 ID: gzwzffj

Thats a pretty old photo. The pad he's holding is the prototype that still had the 3DS circle pads instead of the thumbsticks.

24 : Anonymous2021/05/29 22:29 ID: gzx0z1v

I wish Wii U was the system that had launched in 2006, instead of the base Wii.

26 : Anonymous2021/05/29 23:34 ID: gzx7st5

Loved the Wii U. Shame it never really took off. Had some of the best Nintendo titles ever.

27 : Anonymous2021/05/29 22:44 ID: gzx2l57

Well, I would do the same thing, but I am no CEO so...

28 : Anonymous2021/05/29 22:47 ID: gzx2utz

29 : Anonymous2021/05/29 22:53 ID: gzx3grw

What do you mean lets all try to be?

Us who play games? We dont' run these companies...

You mean the game studios and publishers dont' you OP? Cos your sentance doesn't actually say that.

30 : Anonymous2021/05/29 23:13 ID: gzx5kmf

This dude looks like the type of person who would try to sell you bottled air.

Oh, Wait.

31 : Anonymous2021/05/30 00:06 ID: gzxb2h0

Did that happen?

32 : Anonymous2021/05/29 23:22 ID: gzx6hnp

I can't believe the Wii was successful but the Wii u was a failure.

33 : Anonymous2021/05/29 23:27 ID: gzx71ax

Watch a youtube video called starfox 0 and the wii u, it explains everything and also starfox 0 sucks

34 : Anonymous2021/05/29 23:23 ID: gzx6mfb

He looks like the bad guy from the Lorax ngl...

But let’s take a minute to admire this legend.

35 : Anonymous2021/05/29 23:28 ID: gzx75cv

Well you see, the Japanese actually have respect for one another while most Americans, especially those with money, are a bit more greedy.

cough cough Jeff Bezos. Probably the perfect example.

36 : Anonymous2021/05/29 23:32 ID: gzx7jjo

cough CDPR Execs cough

(And ActiBlizz, and loads more dgmw)

But CDPR higher-ups really nailed the irony of ‘Corpo’ fuckery with it.

Feel for the devs that clearly put hard work and insane hours into some parts of the game.

37 : Anonymous2021/05/29 23:41 ID: gzx8ipx

We Stan Iwata.

38 : Anonymous2021/05/29 23:48 ID: gzx98lv

Iwata is a hero; it saddens me to know he never saw what a success the switch would become.

39 : Anonymous2021/05/29 23:51 ID: gzx9jzl

Iwata is in heaven.

40 : Anonymous2021/05/29 23:57 ID: gzxa44l

Man, shame Nintendo themselves are just anti-fans....

41 : Anonymous2021/05/29 23:58 ID: gzxa7g8

Weird how the WiiU bombed when the switch looks pretty similar (although the switch is full portable). I guess third party games were the key

42 : Anonymous2021/05/29 23:58 ID: gzxa8i2

Keep in mind, he only did it for 5 months.

43 : Anonymous2021/05/30 00:02 ID: gzxanld

oh its is that time of the month to repost this information for karma lol

44 : Anonymous2021/05/29 20:48 ID: gzwphqn

Alternatively they could have caught up with the rest of the gaming world by releasing at least current gen content. Nintendo is bad.

45 : Anonymous2021/05/29 21:04 ID: gzwrfit

This screams "I've never played a Nintendo game in my life"

46 : Anonymous2021/05/29 21:21 ID: gzwtd80

"Caught up with". How does the longest established and most successful console maker and owner of Mario and Zelda catch up with the others? It still had billions in the bank during the Wii U debacle. The Wii U was another groundbreaking system with excellent games but failed entirely by marketing.

47 : Anonymous2021/05/29 21:33 ID: gzwuqbg

It's clear they released the Switch as underpowered and massively out of date.

48 : Anonymous2021/05/29 22:37 ID: gzx1t1p

Iwata's wage was like 90% bonuses at the time.

Nice headline and feelgood story but it wasn't the sacrifice people made it out to be.
