Is there a hidden backstory to this painting? They look nothing alike.

One of Lady D's journals states that she created them by having special flies devour the flesh of the corpses of 3 young women. The flies then mimic the appearance and behavior of the host. They need flesh and blood in order to maintain their forms.

She decided to name her new "daughters" after the sisters depicted in the painting that decorates the Reception Hall of her castle.

Theory is Bela, Cassandra and Daniela are named after three women from the Dimitrescu family. Their clothing is typical of late Georgian/early Victorian (so 1830s-1840s). It's actually a real painting and Capcom altered the faces.

The intention in-game is to confuse the player and make them think the daughters really are centuries old.

I never thought about that. She took the daughters names from a painting of ancestors. I genuinely like that answer.

Why exactly? Their exact ages have no bearing on the plot.

To feed into the vampire illusion. First you give signs that they really are vampires (the blood, powers, immortality, afraid of having the windows opened) then give a scientific explanation. Not that the explanation makes much sense, but it's there. Same thing happens with Beneviento.

I have read it's just an slightly modified version of an actual 19th century painting who happens to have 3 daughters. Can't remember the name, though.

There was another thread with this same picture the other day; I mentioned there that I personally saw this as an artistic rendition/interpretation that was perhaps gifted to Lady D, maybe by the Duke or someone else looking to stay in her favor. I highly doubt that Alcina had daughters before the three witches, though; it’s too similar to Miranda’s story. (So the portrait wouldn’t be of previous daughters lost.)

I mean their entire bodies are just a pile of bugs mimicing a human, so they can probably change the way they look.

The ones in the picture are the original daughters from hundreds of years ago, dead of course.

The three we see now are just villagers converted and renamed to the three in the picture.

This is never stated outright in the game, but it is probably the most likely explanation.

I think the three above were just used as a base
