"Yeah, I'll buy your seashells so you can give me back my own money to pay off a house I'm selling to you!"

ID: h1qdbbr

I mean, he's definitely exporting them & reselling at an outrageous markup, right? I just assumed that was his scam; trap people in crazy mortgages on houses in the middle of resource-rich areas & offer to buy the resources off them so they can pay off the house.

Tom is a tanuki. They're mythical creatures with magical powers known to be tricksters. One of the things they do is shape-shift, both themselves and other objects. In particular, they're known to shape-shift leaves into things to trick people into giving them whatever they want, then the human gets home and realizes that whatever treasure they got from the tanuki is actually just leaves. Sound familiar? This is why the furniture is carried around as leaves.

My theory is that the house, the bells, the furniture, the talking animals, those are all illusions. What Tom has done is create this elaborate ruse in order to trick you into bringing him and his kids the only real things in the game: bugs and fish and fruit. He just wants food.

It's cattle slavery, and we're all paying for the privilege.

ID: h1q61nx

Turns out the mother of pearl is worth 10X what he pays you for the shells so you’re just an indentured servant underpaid for your labor.

Turns out the mother of pearl is worth 10X what he pays you for the shells so you’re just an indentured servant underpaid for your labor.

Yes, but on the black market. Tom Nook is your seashell fence. He takes on a big cut, but he is taking on all of the legal risk.

ID: h1qkzxt

Nah you're a drug mule and those bugs and shells have heroine and cocaine in them.

ID: h1qhudk

Nintendo has clarified in the past that Tom Nook is a misunderstood guy, and that he's genuinely not fussed about how long it takes you to pay back your 0% interest loan.

His bank also gives interest on the amount of bells on your house, and he gives interest on bells donated to infrastructure.

This is the way

3 : Anonymous2021/06/14 13:46 ID: h1qafpq

Better than him seeing me be like "oh, 2 million bells? One sec" and then digging it out in sets of like 900k from my front lawn like some freaky suburban pirate

ID: h1qmlhn

I do not know how much money I have, I do know how many pounds of money that I have.

ID: h1r35ra

That was my decoy gold! You think I'd leave my gold in a locked safe buried underground where anyone can find it? You don't know me at all.

4 : Anonymous2021/06/14 13:08 ID: h1q66pl

O good it's paid off. You don't still want that tiny house do you? We can upgrade you for 300,000 more bells.

ID: h1qbppb

I mean tbf, the dude’s giving us interest-free loans where the only time limit for payment is when we want to expand.

ID: h1qchiy

Exactly, if you’re thinking like a Capitalist, Tom Nook is the most generous man on the island

ID: h1qfigr

And the only reason to expand is to hoard more turnips have access to a bigger stock portfolio.

ID: h1qa6hz

Never be satisfied. That’s the capitalist way.

She sells seashells on the sea-shore

ID: h1qer0y

But the value of these shells will fall

ID: h1qheyt

Due to the laws of supply and demand.

Time to teach the youngsters about smart investments.

Turnip Gang HOOOOOOLD

ID: h1q96bh

Don't hold for more than a week though

ID: h1qb9t3

It’s stupid, but that feature actually kinda ruined the game for me. It went from a slow progression, relaxing game I could play now and then, to a min/max exploit game which I “solved” after two weeks by getting what amounts to infinite money.

Obviously I didn’t have to play like that, but I’ve always struggled with that kind of thing. Sid Meier once said, given the opportunity, players will optimize the fun out of any game.

planting 10k money trees?

ID: h1qgj5p

Haven’t really played new horizons - why not 99k money trees? Does it not work? I haven’t tried it...

ID: h1qh1es

bells are probably more like yen, so that 10k is more like 100.

Don't forget turnip gambling!

ID: h1qf6ee

It teaches the kids about the joys of investing in cryptocurrencies

8 : Anonymous2021/06/14 13:54 ID: h1qbavd

Well, looks like Tom is gonna be breaking Timmy and Tommy's kneecaps.

9 : Anonymous2021/06/14 13:31 ID: h1q8njj

I would DIE if as an April Fools joke or something they made a patch where the Nook kids would be like “oh sorry, once you sell us 3 of something, the demand for this item has dropped. We can only give you half as many bells for it now” or once you hit a certain number, they stop buying it at all.

Obviously would have to be patched back out like a day later, but it would be the funniest fucking thing on the planet to me if suddenly the Nooks became aware of supply and demand

ID: h1q8yej

or just add inflation so that bells are worth less and things cost more over time until it gets devalued so much they move to a different currency just as you have enough bells to pay off your house.

ID: h1qacu1

We actually had a student bar that would do this one day a year.... Drink prices would go up along with demand and drop if no one was buying them.

ID: h1qh72z

If they move to a different currency, historically, you would be fine. Your loan is in the now extremely cheap currency, after all.

Inflation is good for loan holders when the interest rate isn't pegged to inflation.

ID: h1qb5l5

I just started playing Slime Rancher and when I realized I’d been saturating the market and destroying demand I really had to shift my play-style. Made me sad honestly, I was having fun hyper focusing on whichever slimes I thought we’re the best.

ID: h1qdjfu

I never noticed that what you sell actually affects it. It's been a while (got it when it was free), but I do remember that the market fluctuated.

Let's be real, with how easy it is to make money, the Animal Crossing economy must be rife with inflation. Or maybe the main character is the only one competent enough to do these basic tasks that seem to rake in so much money.

ID: h1qk1wm

If you are speaking about how the economy would be if the npcs were alive, then it depends.

You only get inflation if someone prints money, but if they are just trading with the money they always had then no inflation, even if the prices are high for a certain product.

11 : Anonymous2021/06/14 14:00 ID: h1qc1yr

To be fair, it’s his own currency

12 : Anonymous2021/06/14 13:49 ID: h1qaq97

What game is this from?

ID: h1qb5zl

Animal Crossing

Thanks!

"I am never gonna financially recover from this." - Nook.

15 : Anonymous2021/06/14 13:45 ID: h1qa8qx

I paid Tom Nook off with pickle money. I farmed a bunch of sea cucumbers and stuck them up my ass until they developed a slick brine. Tom didn't like them, but he paid me to take my asspickles out of his shop.

ID: h1qf3w3

Where the hell did I put my sea cucumber costume...

ID: h1qcrwa

the fuck

Tom didn't like them, but he paid me to take my asspickles out of his shop.

Just wait till my pumpkin crop comes in, you smug fuck.
