- Why consoles fail

In this thread: people thinking that the vita is the psp, because that's how hard the vita flopped.
ID: h5947zsID: h595neqPorn Station Portable!
ID: h595njqThat’s what happens if you don’t get a decent number of games for the first year after launch. It was a complete embarrassment for Sony and I just don’t know why they created that situation for themselves, other than maybe they felt threatened by the 3DS releasing earlier than them.
ID: h59642mIt's so bizarre that loads of people consider the original PSP to be a failure. I get it, it sold about half as many units as it's primary competition, the DS, yet the PSP still sold more than the N64, Xbox, and Gamecube COMBINED. That's just how much of a juggernaut the DS was.
ID: h59e2fgHonestly it's more that people were assuming the PSP busted because they didn't even know the Vita wasn't a PSP

The Dreamcast didn't fail. We failed the Dreamcast
ID: h591pzq9-9-99 gang checking in.
ID: h59ao7fMy gods, Soul Caliber and NFL 2K were mind blowing. People thought it as either a pre-rendered video (SC) or a Monday night game was on (NFL). I was active duty Navy on ship, and I hooked that system to the TV on the mess decks quite a few times and always drew a crowd just to watch how amazing the games look.
Note this was pre-PS2 so most only knew what Playstation 1 graphics were possible.
ID: h58oe7oLegit was way ahead of it's time, amazing console that failed for all the wrong reasons.
ID: h58p9osSEGA has always been ahead of it's time.
The SEGA Genesis had backwards compatibility, an official online shop (the SEGA channel), a wireless controller, online play (sega net) downloadable games and an add on that allowed users to check banking info (only in Japan).
Also SEGA was one of the pioneers of CD gaming with the SEGA CD and they were one of the key pioneers of open world life simulators with Shenmue.
Basically, SEGA was the Nikola Tesla of gaming. Aka the Mad Scientist.
Edit: Also the SEGA Nomad was SEGA's Nintendo Switch (a portable SEGA Genesis)
ID: h58y9g3Dreamcast didn't fail Sega failed Dreamcast. They just released 200 consoles in like 3 years before this. They were broke. I played the shit out of it and own every game released in north america. Skies of Arcadia remains my favorite game to date. Dreamcast was the shit.
ID: h591w84Sega went throught the phase of trying to pass off connecting parts as new consoles: sega CD, 32x.
Dreamcast was the great one

Man the PSP was the shit back in the day. I'm so sad to see it discontinued along with its successor the Vita. Seriously had so much potential. I hope to see some form of revival from SONY in the future. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
ID: h58tdpnThe Vita had so much potential, it could go toe to toe with the 3DS. But Sony had done the Vita so much injustice.
ID: h58vmrzThe Vita could have been the Switch of it’s day if they had been better about releasing games for it and the propriety memory :/ .
ID: h58xzsoWhat's crazy is the remote play. It actually works on all current ps4 titles. I thought it was bullshit so I downloaded infamous second son to try it out and by God, it worked. And then I booted up ghost of tsushima and played it too. You couldn't be very far away from the home console, but it worked. Flawlessly. This in my opinion is what had all the potential and they just let if flounder.
ID: h58y6adI have my Pearl PSP just for Final Fantasy Tactics The Lion War and Fat Princess.

The Nintendo virtual boy was to ambitious for its time but if had been made now it would be able to make good on the promises of the original
ID: h58vzo9When I was a kid, I wanted one so bad.
ID: h5910stMy brother worked at Radio Shack when they discontinued it. He bought it from the store for ~$10.
It felt pretty cool to have a console no one else had, but man was it difficult to use. It was so hard to get comfortable as well. I am glad to have been able to use a silly piece of console history, 100%.
ID: h58wcz0I had one and everyone always wanted to play it. We had alot of fun with that thing.
ID: h590xhjIt's time for Nintendo to re-enter the VR market, with it's new, update console:
Nintendo Virtual Man™
ID: h595gnioh man imagine how cool an official vr metroid prime entry would be

But why did the Nokia N-Gage fail?
ID: h597k3rYou had to take out the battery to change the game.
You had to play with the number pad, which felt mushy and not at all like console buttons.
The phone felt light and cheap.
Also you didn't hold it like a normal phone when talking, but more like a taco to your ear. It looked stupid.
And it cost three times as much as its competitor, the Gameboy Advance.
It was a great idea, with a bad execution.
ID: h59gyafYeah, iirc the people in charge refused to give the N-gage its own production line and instead of being designed from the ground up to be its own thing it had to be basically a compromise with another phone they were making.
ID: h597apoBecause there was no fucking way I was side talking with an electronic taco.
ID: h598ih3REMOVING THE BATTERY TO REPLACE THE GAME!
Also everything else with it.
And it looks like a Taco.

Dream cast was such a crazy good console. They used to have this emulator called Bleem! That let you emulate PS1 games. I had it for PC, but they also made a version of it for the dream cast called Bleemcast
ID: h591zd2Man I remember Bleem. It was the only emulator that worked flawlessly on my shitty computer at the time, because the developers coded it in assembly.
-
It sucks because for the first year of its release the Dreamcast sold pretty decently. But once those rumours of the ps2 started, nothing could save the Dreamcast
ID: h59avcrIt wasn't rumors. It was straight from Sony themselves. Sega announced their console, and the Sony announced theirs would be cheaper and much more powerful, if you could just wait 6 more months.
ID: h59dsbjThe Dreamcast was a pioneer in many aspects, but the DVD drive included in the PS2 sealed its fate. That was a huge selling point iirc

I see a CDi, but no 3DO!?
ID: h5931dy3DO: astronomically expensive, dated controller, lack of third party support, too many interactive FMV games.
Jaguar: ATROCIOUS controller, barely outperformed Super Nintendo.
32x: dead on arrival
ID: h58vgu9No Laseractive and Atari Jaguar either
ID: h592tdnShout out to the Neo Geo boys

The Dreamcast was the OG of mod'ing a system. Ya'll sleeping on the Dreamcast. They went out of business because they didn't encrypt their games and we YANKED them all.
ID: h58vx5pSpent hours playing “Tokyo Extreme Racer”. And still “Sonic Adventure” one of the best story/game of all time.
-
God I miss my Dreamcast
ID: h58y9soFirefly and Dreamcast. 2 things nerds like us will never get over.
-
Someone might have said it but early days Xbox one failed because Microsoft wanted to see your bedroom.
ID: h59i3r4The Xbox One could have very well been on this list have Microsoft stuck with their guns on all the DRM stuff they mentioned at E3.
-
Idk what the 4th one is but it looks like a fucking grill
ID: h58wx2kYeah, it was as if, somebody said “hey, what if somebody is playing this and got hit by a bus”? Panicked, and added that stand, which also made it so uncomfortable that it could only really be played by lying flat on your back.
The posture expected by the design is literally, sitting at a table, and leaning forward into this thing, like the posture for taking an eye exam. It was like a medieval torture device. Nothing is fun enough to do a Quasimodo impression for hours on end.
ID: h5909pvThat's why as a kid I would take off the stand and place it on my bed and just play it while laying on my stomach with my hands out front holding the controller behind it.
The Wario game for it was actually pretty fun or maybe that's just nostalgia.

Because of the Dreamcast I quit buying consoles for a long period and invested in upgrading my computer parts to play games. At that time I was so mad when they quit making games and went out of business.
ID: h58qnnfI bought my Dreamcast the week after they announced that they were discontinued. $50CAD BNIB and I never paid more than ~$5CAD for a game. Best system I ever bought.
Edit: it still works, and I sold it last year for $250.

The outpouring of love for the Dreamcast is exactly why I came to the comments
引用元:https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/oklncu/why_consoles_fail/
It’s honestly sad, the PSP was the coolest thing to have when I was a kid, I was psyched when I got mine. I remember hearing about some new PSP coming out and then it just fell off the map right after release.
