One of the oldest reposts in gaming history, I think. This was 1983 when it came out, and I'm sure it didn't take more than a week before someone went, "Hey! Mario dies on the cover!". We didn't get to share this in image format to the entire world for like another decade, though.

If they had extended the stone background behind him on the cover, you wouldn't have seen him very well. It was for higher contrast.
