Sony lied. Forbidden West would get the upgrade for Free to PS5, according to Sony a year ago.
2 : Anonymous2021/09/03 15:09 ID: hbge3uc

The title has been changed by OP, and is blatantly wrong, but we have decided to leave this post up for discussion. To clarify, the statements made by Sony appear to have been misinterpreted by the author.

Specifically:

The PS4 digital versions of launch games include a free upgrade on both PS5 consoles, while the PS4 disc versions of these games include a free upgrade on the PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-Ray disc drive.”

Horizon Forbidden West is not a launch game so it can be assumed they did not intend to give it a free upgrade.

Can we finally get PS5 only games as currently my PS5 is a boosted PS4. Where are the damn games finally...

ID: hbgoen1

Don't worry. GTA5 will play just fine on your PS5 =P.

ID: hbgwzji

There’s also this awesome hidden gem called Skyrim you might not have played yet.

ID: hbgat9s

You tried Ratchet & Clank? It's terrific. Definitely feels next-gen.

ID: hbgim18

Agreed, but we’re coming up on a year of the PS5 being released and that’s essentially the only one true PS5. And takes maybe 20 hours to platinum so not a whole lot of replayability with it. Maybe Returnal? But the output of true PS5 games has been embarrassing.

ID: hbgzong

I've been playing the first HZD (for the first time) on PS5 - it looks fantastic

ID: hbgj8o3

Returnal is great too.

ID: hbgrggh

I bet it is, been waiting for that one.. but $90 Canadian is far too much for a roguelite. Waiting for that sale!

ID: hbgaf3y

I hear you with this one.

ID: hbhtkav

Ps5 is like ps4 pro pro

ID: hbj8pny

As someone who didn't buy a PS4, the PS5 is a pretty good value proposition to me. But if I already owned a PS4 I'm not sure why I would want a PS5 at this point.

ID: hbhuxf6

Thought I'd miss out waiting to upgrade but haven't really felt I'm missing anything.

ID: hbgq309

While I agree with you it’s also a REALLY boosted PS4. Like playing the first party games I missed and other remasters at 60-120 FPS 1080p-4K is amazing so amazing. Also some real juggernauts on the horizon. All in all totally worth it because it’s not like the PS5 will get a price drop anytime soon.

This gens really different from previous ones it’s like PC it’s all in the specs so a lot of games can theoretically and will sell on both. I don’t think that should undersell how amazing the Ps5 hardware is.

ID: hbie04i

This gens really different from previous ones it’s like PC

It's the whole point they moved to x86 architecture. That allows for better flexibility and cheaper cross gen development compared to going from PS3 to PS4.

No one wants to build hype for a platform for 7 years, sell tens of millions of units and then suddenly just leave it in the dust and start from 0. That's why cross gen matters.

If Sony and Guerrilla is putting tons of real work into the PS5 version to make it fully take advantage of the PS5 they need to:

1) Show us the PS4 version and the PS5 version side-by-side to justify the pricing difference. If this is more than a patch like in The Last of Us Part II or God of War and has full-on haptics on par with an Astro's Playroom, 3D Audio, SSD utilization, and all the next-gen, PS5-only bells and whistles then show us.

2) Create a $10 upgrade path for Standard Edition PS4 owners and make all of this nonsense go away. If you can offer it for the Deluxe Edition you can do it for the Standard Edition.

My biggest concern for this is that if Sony wants to do this for Forbidden West then expect the same for God of War and GT7.

ID: hbi488o

2 is the thing. Everything else is ancillary. Sony are artificially restricting a fair and reasonable upgrade path for their own most loyal of customers and it is scummy as hell.

ID: hbitmza

"you already bought it once? not good enough"

5 : Anonymous2021/09/03 15:00 ID: hbgcuxy

How most games are being handled.

"buy game for 60 or 70 dollars and you get both"

How Sony just handled Horizon Forbidden West.

"get the PS4+PS5 version ONLY IF you buy the 80 dollar bundle version. If you buy the 60 dollar version, there's currently no option to pay 10 extra dollars and you'd actually have to buy the PS5 version separately, spending possibly 130+ dollars. 60(for PS4 version) and 70(for PS5 version) a 2nd time".

Oh and on top of that, if you buy the standard PS4 physical version, you're also unable to get the PS5 upgrade since the 80 dollar bundle is ONLY digital. Fuck disc buyers huh.

That's the issue with this situation. If you buy the standard edition on PS4, you cannot upgrade to the PS5 version. You're forced to spend the 80 bucks. You'd be an idiot to defend this clear bullshit.

If they simply just did what death stranding and many other AAA games do, and you pay 10 bucks to upgrade to the next gen version, there wouldn't be any uproar. PS5 version could be 69.99. PS4 is 59.99 with 10 dollar upgrade. But then they went and decided to be Activision level bitches.

Remember when Smart Delivery was all "marketing bullshit" and "MS wasn't doing anything different than Sony, they just coined a term for it"?

ID: hbhe8ft

For real. I really liked how MS handled saves and the achievements going from Xbone to XSX. You don't even notice it. I got a PS5 a couple weeks ago and went to play FF7R and my save wasn't there, but it was on the cloud. I had to boot up my PS4 and use their save transfer tool to get it on my PS5 (More of an issue with SE). BUT WAIT, you can only play the PS4 version with your PS4 save. You have to start a new game if you want to play with the PS5 upgrades. You also get a new trophy list for the PS5 versions of the game. At least the upgrade to that was free. Another example of this is Nioh 2. It's frustrating to say the least. It's really half baked compared to Smart Delivery.

ID: hbi5vvu

I’ll admit it, I was totally one of the people that thought that it was all marketing. Like 100% on board with it being marketing. Oof, I was wrong… At best, Sony’s “Smart Delivery” solution is a poorly designed store/UI where you have to make sure you’re downloading the PS5 version rather than the PS4 version. Countless posts were, and still are, on the sub confused about why they couldn’t get increased resolution, performance, etc. At worst, Sony is not doing “Smart Delivery” because they can charge twice for the game, as evidenced by this bullshit.

I really thought Smart Delivery was a gimmick, and it honestly would be if Sony wasn’t so god damn greedy with the upgrade paths (like the whole “download the best version of the game possible” is really a gimmick, but Sony realized they could charge for that). But it’s become abundantly clear to me Microsoft is way more consumer friendly at the current moment.

It just works on Xbox, and I applaud all of the moves they’ve made in the past couple years because it will surely kick Sony into gear.

ID: hbh8fxf

I bet the people who worked on that feel vindicated right now

ID: hbgitpn

Fuck disc buyers huh.

Clearly, yes. The Collector's editions don't include physical discs either. Obviously, they're trying to downgrade discs to the poor and less desirable status. The edition for the plebeians. No one who was serious about the game would want to mull around in the mud with a disc.

Sony has done a complete 180. First step is getting discs shunned by gamers. Making upgrade paths impossible or difficult will help pave the way.

Then, in the future they'll say "Know all those games you bought way back when? You can't play them anymore unless you subscribe to our (such and such) service and pay a monthly fee". Games as a service. No ownership. No rights and nothing to depend on. Welcome to the future.

Anybody else think they should have amped up the game more and only release it on PS5? Obviously I understand that financially its better to release on PS4, too. Heres to hoping we get a full PS5 gen Horizon later into the gen.

Edit: lots of people are replying about the financial side, which I did include in my original post. I also do understand that the PS5 is still hard to get. I got mine in July. That said I did have this opinion pre-ps5, too. Why do I want a proper PS5 release then? Just to see the game built for this gen from the ground up. No loading screens, 120hz, epic textures etc. Basically being free from the last gen bottle neck. And yes, I'd be personally ready to wait a year or two more for that. No hurry.

I would like to also add that its probably going to be a 5/5 game regardless. I loved the first one. Maybe the third entry is what I described.

ID: hbhjd1m

Sony even mocked Microsoft at some point for their plan of cross-gen releases, then they pretty much only have ratchet and clank as a proper PS5 game (and if Insomniac could have easily made a PS4 version without some long-ass transitions between dimensions or having to rework the whole game, you can bet they would)

ID: hbh2pvn

We should start getting actual PS5 games once the PS6 stats leak at this rate.

7 : Anonymous2021/09/03 22:14 ID: hbi0y0v

I’m not buying the game new. It will eventually become priced within my range with a summer deal or something like that.

8 : Anonymous2021/09/03 15:14 ID: hbgew3p

Ill buy it cheap with dlc. Thanks.

ID: hbgvdbx

When Sony announced £70 for games, I immediately said that I would buy the launch games, and R&C when it released, but would wait until any subsequent games dropped to £40-50... Especially with the cross-gen nature of Horizon and GoW.

Enough publishers are releasing games for the same prices, that I'm not going to have a dearth of games to play by waiting for overpriced Sony first party titles. I just platinumed Scarlet Nexus. It wasn't perfect, but was fun, gave me 57 hours of play, and cost me £32, less than 2 months after launch.

I'm still playing RE Village due to the replay factor and mercenaries. It looks incredible on PS5, runs mostly 60fps with RT and cost me £41 on launch day with the lenticular sleeve.

The language in their statement may technically absolve them of this travesty of a situation with HFW upgrades, but I'm a pretty careful reader and even I missed the "at launch" as it could just have easily meant "launch of each game" as opposed to "system launch date titles". It's pretty a pretty gross lack of clarity.

ID: hbife3v

It's pretty a pretty gross lack of clarity.

And pretty intentional, most likely.

9 : Anonymous2021/09/03 14:55 ID: hbgc2av

So if you had a PS4 and bought the PS4 $60 version, then wound up getting a PS5 you couldn’t pay the $10 difference? You have to spend another $70??

ID: hbgcc5k

Yep, no means of upgrade currently

10 : Anonymous2021/09/03 15:56 ID: hbgl1o1

the guilt i feel for owning a ps5 and being able to buy the correct version of the game the first time

11 : Anonymous2021/09/03 14:32 ID: hbg8uh1

This is too funny. How can anyone even want to defend this shity anti consumer practice?

Like it or not, xbox is showing Sony how its done right now.. Charging customers twice for the same game (with tweaked code) is not the way..

ID: hbgd7p1

More seamless upgrade too without having to worry about save files. Everything is done behind the scenes without having to worry about which version you’re running. SMH Sony

ID: hbgnge1

It's actually darn impressive, on my series x I booted up skate 3, a game I haven't played since the 360 and my save file was just there.

Say what you want about Microsoft but they have their backend stuff pretty much nailed.

ID: hbghz3t

Also all save files are backed up automatically, and automatically downloaded on new systems when you start up the game. I have never even had to think about save games on my Xbox. If I go to a friend's house and log in, my save is there. If a game on my PC supports cross save with Xbox (many GamePass games support this), that's automatic too. It's effortless

12 : Anonymous2021/09/05 14:33 ID: hbovhlt

Not so misleading is it?

13 : Anonymous2021/09/03 14:02 ID: hbg4nis

Does this count as a "launch game" as suggested by the quote from last year?

ID: hbg4yva

It'll have been more than a year, no way.

ID: hbgfx8a

While it wasn’t mentioned in Sony’s official announcement, developers of certain games later confirmed that PS5 exclusives like “Horizon: Forbidden West” and “Spider-Man: Miles Morales” aren’t exclusive at all. They’re both releasing PS4 versions, which may irritate a few Sony fans who took to heart Sony’s commitment to “next gen” development. The belief is that developing games across generations stifles creativity, and hampers the technological ambitions of the game, since it has to cater to an audience with less powerful machines.

“No one should be disappointed,” Ryan said. “The PS5 versions of those games are built from the ground up to take advantage of the PS5 feature set, and we have an upgrade path for PS4 users to get the PS5 versions for free. It’s about people having choice. I’m really quite pleased about the situation.”

14 : Anonymous2021/09/03 15:14 ID: hbgeuyf

My curiousity is...why did they even make this game for previous gen?

ID: hbglufy

Very big market to miss

ID: hbgn23h

Make money from ps4 owners. If everyone waited until they had a ps5 to buy they’d probably be buying the game at a discount. There are more ps4 owners than ps5 owners.

ID: hbgmjdr

140 millions or so costumers maybe?

ID: hbgo4sk

That's a lot of fabric.

15 : Anonymous2021/09/03 22:05 ID: hbhzs1b

Forbidden West was mentioned BY NAME as being eligible for free PS5 upgrade. The fact that it was delayed means nothing. MODs can try to twist information all they want, Sony lied.

16 : Anonymous2021/09/05 05:57 ID: hbnp2ji

I kinda wanna just keep returning to see if the mod who jumped the gun will issue a correction at any point

ID: hbowvkl

Lol I’m doing exactly the same thing. His post came off so rude to me.
