- After today's 21.9.1 driver, SAM is detected on my 3600/RX5700XT + B450 system
-
Just to be clear, the main takeaway is that you don't need a B550/X570 board to enable SAM after this driver update.
ID: hcpznlgID: hcq0oaeI know, my point is AMD doesn't officially support B450/X470 but it seems to be working fine on the contrary.
ID: hcql4xvThe BIOS toggle is for rebar, not SAM. SAM is AMD's tech on top of rebar. That's why Nvidia's GPUs gain less from rebar than AMD's GPUs gain from SAM.
ID: hcpujtmI've been trying to wait for a non-beta for my non-max board... But will probably do the bios update when I get a free 1/2 day.
I'll probably only test bl3.
ID: hcqgwotThat ia wrong, you never needed. A b450 would work perfectly
ID: hcqjboc.... I know, I'm just confirming despite AMD's not officially supporting it. I've had it turn on for months now and worked fine on Linux.
ID: hcqk97xWhich b450 you running
ID: hcqnh4mMSI B450 TOMAHAWK non-MAX with latest BIOS.

Try doing some test using AC Valhalla if you have it. I've noticed that Valhalla has noticeable performance improvement when SAM is ON, compared to when it's OFF.

Crying in ryzen 2000 series ...
ID: hcqj1m8crying in ryzen 2000 series radeon rx500 series
ID: hcqjho2I have an 2700xt and the driver says it's activated...
ID: hcqmoefMobo?
ID: hcqv6jeID: hcqnk5fNow this is interesting.
-
Did a quick unscientific test with Cyberpunk 2077 on a static scene.
62-63FPS w/ SAM OFF
65-66FPS w/ SAM ON
ID: hcqi3p0It was 10-15% for me on 6800XT.
-
Can I just say, that I am 100% extremely wrong and never underestimate AMD how they can implement things. I am always amazed!
-
So we don't need a RDNA2/Zen3 anymore?
ID: hcqh3ptYou never needed zen3, only rdna2. It would work on zen2 as well, and intel cpus
ID: hcqh550Nope. They switched up the software UI too and added an Auto Overclock feature that OCs your CPU/GPU

I have a 3600, 5700 xt and a b450 motherboard, it is not showing as an option for me. Says Not Available.
ID: hcqkoiyThats because you need to change csm to uefi
Only uefi bios supports SAM. read my second last message.
ID: hcqohzjI am using uefi already. I do have virtualization enabled to run vm's. wonder if that could do it.
-
interesting. Mine isn't reading it for some reason. Unfortunate.
-
bench ?
-
I cant seem to boot into windows 10, same setup. When I enabled csm to uefi, enable sam and then boot, none of my drives with windows 10 show up
ID: hcq8nxbTry disabling CSM. I had it enabled on a Aorus board and it doesn't work. The Aorus/Gigabyte website shows you have to disable CSM for it to work.
ID: hcq9b3kI have a msi x570 board, Its switched from csm to uefi and couldn't find a boot drive
ID: hcqhlq6You cant enable uefi if your windows installation is csm.
CSM is the legacy way for bios.
CSM requires windows to be installed on MBR partitions, while UEFI needs GPT partition.
UEFI doesnt recognize mbr drives, need to format them and turn them into gpt.
I juat reinstalled windows 10 and turned my old cms mbr partitions to GPT.

You know, if AMD didn't drop support for their R9 390 cards I'd be very happy. Nevertheless this is good support for many owners out there!
-
We got the exact same system 😀
-
what is SAM?
ID: hcqh6wgSmart access memory dude. Free performance
ID: hcqjn6wI have MSI B550-A Pro, 5600X, Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro SL 4x8GB 3600MHz and Gainward 3060ti OC. Can i use this option? And how?
-
Whaaat? I thought you had to have a 6000 series card for this to work. I'll have to update later today and give it a shot on my 3800x/5700 xt
-
I already sis a few tests and will release a video soon 😀
-
do you need the full version of radeon software to see it in the software ? got a x470 with a 6700xt, i can activate sam in uefi but i don't see anything in the software with the minimalist version
-
X370 support when?
ID: hcqqpefNever. Just upgrade to a X570/B550 that has lan/usb issues.

-
Sorry but what is sam?

3800X and 5700XT here,
Enabled Resize Bar and Above 4G Decoding in UEFI. Rebooted, Windows did some stuff, rebooted again.
I don't see any "Smart Access Memory" toggle under Tuning, but HWiNFO indicates it's enabled, and I have an entry for "Large Memory Range" under my graphics card in Device Manager. So I think it's working...
-
After 3 hours of updating bios/drivers and researching I finally got sam to work on same setup, glad you posted this up.
-
I have a RX 5600 XT, Ryzen 5600x and Asus TUF X570 with latest bios installed. Running Windows 11 latest beta build.
Above 4G = ON;
Rebar = ON;
Resizable Bar = Auto;CSM = OFF.
(Yes, there is two options for Resizable Bar inside Asus BIOS).
Adrenalin software shows that SAM is enabled, but i don't see the Large Memory Range and GPU-Z reports that Resizable Bar is disabled and my graphics card is not compatible.
Any ideas?
-
I have i5 11400 and x560 intel chipset with 5700xt... that means I can't have SAM even if I enable resizable bar? So I won't benefiy at all? 🙁
-
I'm loving that we're getting free performance uplifts. Very nice.
-
I have downloaded the latest 21.9.1 driver and instead of "smart access memory" It reads "resizable bar". I have enabled resizable bar in the bios and after restart I have it enabled in the drivers.
I have i5 11400 and 5700xt. Do I benefit at all from it or should I disable it? -
works on my MSI x470 m7 AC w/ 5700 XT and 5600x
-
I can't find Resizable BAR option in my BIOS options, can anyone help me? I can enable/disable 4G Decoding but nothing else.
Here's is my pc specification RX 5600 -
I have a 3600 and I often find it to be the bottleneck for my Vega 56 (kinda low single core performance). Probably going to look into upgrading both CPU and GPU soon since better (still budget) options are available. Hoping for a good 2022 for AMD cards though, Nvidia seems to never stop releasing cards.

TO ANYONE THINKING OF CHANGING CSM TO UEFI TO ENABLE SAM
You cant simply change your CSM to UEFI.
If you try and all your drives are MBR (CSM) UEFI bios doesnt recognize them.
Also, you cant change your windows drive to GPT partition without having to format the drive.
This is because uefi needs GPT partitioned drives. which means you need to reinstall windows after changing from csm to uefi so the windows installer partitions the newly formatted drive aa GPT.
-
This is partially true. You do need to be on a GPT format, and if you're not the windows drive wont show up as a boot option. But you dont actually need to reinstall windows to fix this. I had the CSM issue and I believe I used this guide to change to GPT without any issues
-
Just make sure when using this to make sure it helps in game performance. Just because something is enabled doesn't mean it necessarily helps.

Many b450 mobo already have bios to enable sam tho
