Is this the longest a game been in early access?

Project Zomboid beats it by a month 8. Nov 2013

ID: hd6zyzo

Steam early access launched in March 20th 2013

I guess Zomboid is the closest to that that is still being developed

ID: hd71ofu

Project Zomboid was also sold directly on their website for a year or two before early access was on steam.

And it still gets updates

ID: hd7ny3g

Dwarf fortress; TIME IS RELATIVE

ID: hd799e6

That game is amazing to be honest. The level of detail and passion that still goes on in that game is crazy. Ended up getting hooked watching some Sequisha play it and realizing that it doesn’t have to be stressful. More like a stardew valley with zombies and if you die you lose your character.

ID: hd7gdqb

I technically bought that game in 2011before they got robbed and lost a bunch of the source code for the game.

I forgot it even exists until a few months ago I saw a stream playing it.

ID: hd7t6dh

For anyone interested that game is awesome, they've had some huge updates (no NPCs yet sadly) and are doing a big mutliplayer push.

Highly recommend that game if you're into zombie survival games.

Check out Interstellar Marines. It seems that the Devs ran away with the money.

Star Citizen was also 'playable' in 2013. They're both solid contenders for the title.

ID: hd7tqrl

Saw someone coin the phrase "Development as a Service" in another thread about Star citizen. What a perfect way to describe what that project has become.

Edit: Thank you all for the awards kind redditors!

ID: hd7uvdn

That's disgustingly accurate, and wow is that shady as shit.

I'm out of free awards for the day, but I'll swing by tomorrow and lay one on you.

7 years to die

ID: hd84pem

Up to past 8 now...

ID: hd8a2g0

"I'm not dead yet!"

5 : Anonymous2021/09/17 16:32 ID: hd83nmn

Here is one that's been in Early Access 12 years longer.

ID: hd89znf

I played that game in like 2003 on dialup using a pre-built PC.

ID: hd8ly3l

Lol and it has a monthly subscription option... Damn

6 : Anonymous2021/09/17 12:45 ID: hd78t34

Damn, I wish my homies still wanted to play this with me

ID: hd9i3ex

Make new homies! I'll play with you.

7 : Anonymous2021/09/17 11:30 ID: hd711tf

Yeah not sure what they are even doing to the game anymore. It's just texture updates for the character models. Game is still optimized pretty badly

ID: hd732pk

It's not optimized but since it released 8 years ago it now runs fairly well on modern day potatoes and even better on good hardware.

ID: hd7u4qe

Every few years I go back and play it and it feels and looks a lot different. Tons of changes to the systems like the skills, perks system whatever you call it.

Feels like one guys passion project that he works on in his spare time but it's been seeing updates for sure.

ID: hd85hcs

Ah, the Crysis school of game performance. Make the game you can, wait for hardware to catch up.

ID: hd7n6vz

It's not just textures but entirely new character models and code optimization. That being said I think they let leak on stream not long ago that they're porting it to unreal engine 5. But I could be wrong.

ID: hd7wp8v

They also keep reworking the same systems over and over again. I think they simply don't have any plan.

ID: hd92ol2

This is the part that bugs the hell out of me. I play it pretty consistently still and every time there’s an update they majorly overhaul something.

They’ve redone the skills system like 4 times now. It’s almost as bad as how often Dead Matter redoes everything.

ID: hd79f7r

It's a way for Devs to get around Steam's patching policies. They can kind of do it on demand by leaving it in Early Access.

ID: hd7yzyb

it's also interesting considering it got a PS4 and Xbox one release.

ID: hd89v5z

Steam doesn’t certify patches like consoles do. You can upload updates at literally any time, and as often as you’d like, regardless of Early Access status.

Steam makes it easy to patch your game or add content at any time that you need to in order to best serve your audience on your schedule. Feel free to update as often as you need to, but remember that players who have your game installed will need to download each update before they can launch the game again, so be considerate if your updates are large in size.

8 : Anonymous2021/09/17 12:53 ID: hd79na4

Much as I love 7 days to die I think I'd actually go back and play more if it got a graphics update or just shifted to a new engine

ID: hd8b6b1

or just shifted to a new engine

just shifted

just

lol, this would be pretty much a whole re-write

ID: hd7mb5q

I actually reinstalled it a couple weeks ago to check out what was new. It still made my eyes want to bleed by looking at the textures, and it still was a stuttery fuckfest of poor optimization.

ID: hd7uoqf

Yeah once you start terraforming and building a ton it gets even worse.

ID: hd8jm7d

"or just shift to a new engine"

Lmao

ID: hd8srec

Allegedly they’re shifting to Unreal Engine 5, but seeing how long it takes for ‘simpler’ updates with just graphical improvements I don’t think it’d happen for another 2-3 years.

9 : Anonymous2021/09/17 15:41 ID: hd7wflv

You cant have bad game release it you dont release your game.

10 : Anonymous2021/09/17 15:26 ID: hd7u6nh

Ark: survival evolved was in early access for years and even after the game was fully released it still plays like it's in early access

ID: hd7wbw8

Man that was a cool game, but the devs had a serious disconnect from reality when it comes to time investment, At least for the first year or so. I remember chilling with the homies for 12 hours multiple times trying to train our first trex.

11 : Anonymous2021/09/17 16:17 ID: hd81hpp

Dwarf fortress

12 : Anonymous2021/09/17 15:17 ID: hd7sx31

7 years to wait

13 : Anonymous2021/09/17 13:46 ID: hd7g8pa

Still a great game. So much fun going full dwarf and digging tunnels and underground bunkers with friends.

14 : Anonymous2021/09/17 16:38 ID: hd84io8

In the same time that Star Citizen has been in development SpaceX has designed, built, and launched real rockets into orbit.

15 : Anonymous2021/09/17 11:14 ID: hd6zky0

It’s the best early access game I have played.

ID: hd7fut1

They started doing streams revealing Alpha 20, this update looks incredible.

ID: hd7qmd6

It’s been a fun ride, can’t believe it’s been out since 2013 lol

ID: hd8ur8k

It's honestly super fun. My favorite save that I've got going is no zombies, just a lone survivor rebuilding a destroyed city. Put on a podcast in the background and I can play for hours just rebuilding.

16 : Anonymous2021/09/17 17:50 ID: hd8eyh4

they keep redesigning what their game should be instead of making 7 days to die 2.

17 : Anonymous2021/09/17 14:57 ID: hd7pzef

Not quite the same, but Warframe has been in beta since "release" in march 2013. It never officially left beta stage.

18 : Anonymous2021/09/17 15:15 ID: hd7snn3

Started the tutorial and got killed by a Zombie dog about 7 seconds into the game. Who needs 7 days when you got speedrun strats like that.
