My first gpu lol someone stole it from my pc years back

ID: hde287kIt's good to be young 😀 My first GPU was something on VESA slot, of which name I can't recall. Though I remember it could go up to 800x600 with 256 colors or 1024x768, but only limited to 16 colors and 60Hz refresh rate which was killing your eyes on 14" CRT screen... The reason for such a limited resolution range was onboard memory which was 512KB I think, so it couldn't hold frame buffer for bigger screen or faster refresh rates. It's kinda crazy when you think nowadays every dGPU will easily do dual 4K at 60 Hz (which on LCD is just fine, because there's no flickering)...
ID: hdeu6v4I remember I had voodoo 3dfx card, used to love sitting and watching future crew second reality blasting its music through my soundblaster sound card. That was after our 386 died.
I want to build an old pc again and get all the old games, flashback, another world, Prince of Persia (Prince.exe -megahit) and show them to my kids, recapture the fun.

ID: hdfmsavMy first card was a Riva 128zx 8mb. Worked 2 jobs (1 as a paperboy) for like a year and then bought this with every cent I had to game all of the summer holidays (which is in December here in SA). Eventually sold that and traded up to a TNT2 M64 2 years later, still working those 2 jobs.
I still have the TNT2 in an anti-static bag. Wish I had kept the original packaging but what did teenager me know back then lol.

I bought one of these to play FF14 when it first launched, the game sucked, but this card was a beast. I used it with a phenom x4 940, then passed it down to my son and he used it to play Minecraft for a long time, then I turned it into and emulation machine and put it in an arcade cabinet I built. I still have the card and the box.

MS wouldn’t let me install drivers for this relic.

I just bought the 6700 XT for 800$. Gonna sell this one, and hopefully land at 0$ profit after ebay fees. This one is slower (67% of 5700 XT) at HEVC with AMD VCN, but that's OK, at least it's completely quiet when in load, and all my games run at max settings now, so I'm happy.

I ran a pair of these Crossfired with a Phenom x6 1090T back in the day on a 890FX motherboard from 2010 till 2011. (AKA the AMD Leo Platform)

i love old hardwarte and like to see it being used. That you have derived use from it is a good thing to me. GCN was a good architcture what with Dx11 and in the case nice fast GDDR RAM. Keep it around, you never know.
ID: hddtleoThe 5000 series is all Terascale. The drivers are old and terrible, so in more modern games like DOOM an HD 7970 can be 3-5x faster.
Still quite good (around a GT 1030) at some games that happen to run well, and older games are totally fine.

ID: hddnr8cGonna be hard to use in the future without drivers. Couldn’t use the pc I used this on other than stream media (pulled that GPU temporarily for the new build).
ID: hdej6xhThe legacy drivers work fine with older games, not the current AAA ones but then again it depends on what you play. My Steam library is 175 games. Nany are older due to the length of my membership there dating back to 2004. I can quite easily find a game to run on TeraScale or early GCN cards. Much fun in some of those.
The legacy drivers are quite stable and don't seem tohave many issues with these older games. FWIW I consider older games to be pretty much anything up to 2018 currently.

I had a pair of 5850s crossfired at one time. They ran CoD Black Ops and MW2 like a boss.

Edit: didn’t even crossfire & was still great.

I've had a 4850, 5830, 5850, two 6950's, two R7 270x's and an a R9 380.
After the 380 every AMD card has been OOS that I've tried to buy. So I went to GTX 1080 and RTX 3070.
Hopefully some time around 2024 I'll be able to find one.
ID: hdejqhwI can find 6000 series cards (I live near a MicroCenter), the problem is, they only carry PowerColor Red Devils. They're way overpriced. I refuse to pay that for cards that aren't as performant as the 3000 series.

I was in the exact same situation a few months ago (except mine is Saphire), my R9 380 died and I rolled back to this until I managed to get a 1660.
Held up suprisingly well.

It was a beast then. Not so much now, but it’s perfect for streaming games from my new rig & being my file/media server.

See, y’all had the actual GPUs with color growing up! I remember the PC we had as a kid, it was an XT clone, no hard drive, 2 5.25” floppy drives, with a Hercules monochrome video card in it. That’s right, monochrome! We had a CRT monitor that gave us the choice via a switch on the back of either green or amber monochrome and that was as far as the colors went! Eventually, we upgraded to a 16-color EGA video card but it was a good year and a half before it had even come out! So feel lucky!

Hell, didn’t even have a computer growing up as a kid. Didn’t get a computer until I went to college.
I didn’t really play games on PC, so I got an Apple.
