CPU upgrade for HP Omen turned into a new build

Bought the HP Omen with the Ryzen 7 5800X and 3060ti, upgraded it to 64GB of ram from 16GB, wanted the Ryzen 9 5900X but realized I would need a bigger cooler which wouldn’t fit in the Omen case, I then bought a new case then saw something about the Omen motherboard having fitment issues so I bought a new motherboard, but my new cooler wouldn’t fit with my RAM so I bought 4 more sticks of low profile ram (64GB), figured why not upgrade the PSU so I bought a 850W PSU and now I have a full new build lol

It was a fun build being my first but also very frustrating as I kept losing screws lol everything working fine, but my only worry is the cooler isn’t on correctly, seems to be so far as my temps are around 35 degrees idling
ID: him1zkqID: himkgk1It reminds me of my first PC. It was an Acer prebuilt with a 3rd gen i5 and a GT 620 2Gb GDDR3.
When the warranty of that thing expired, I started to modify the PC: New GPU and PSU, then case swap, ssd swap, more fans... and when the motherboard crapped itself and killed the i5, went for an i7 4790k with a Z97 board.
6 years later, the only thing that I keep from that original build is the 1Tb HDD LMAO

ID: himf45aIt's actually an incredible AIO. Where I live it's one of the cheapest options (by a long shot too) while also being, if not the best cooler AND quietest... No bloatware needed as it's all done via BIOS. Best purchase I ever made.

ID: hilxcxgWent down the same road early this year. Started with an omen with a 9700k and 2080. Now have a completely new build with 5900x and 3080. Fun and expensive journey but I’ve learned a lot and obviously have a much better system.

question, what compelled you to get 64gb of RAM? that just feels odd paired with a 3060 Ti but is there a real reason for needing that much?
ID: hilkz1gBesides gaming I’m a software engineer and my build environment requires around 32GB, half dedicated to Linux VM other half for windows to use simultaneously, same with the CPU cores
ID: hillb2bI see, I don't know much about that but I would've imagined that it'd be hard hitting on everything, the 3060 Ti is plenty powerful, I have two, a Zotac AMP White and a Founders Edition for my two PCs, but it still just pales in comparison to something like a 3080 Ti or a 3090

Ah, the old “HP Omen prebuilt to upgrading because HP prebuilts kinda suck” pipeline. I’m still not out of it yet! (Using my HP blower 1070 as the last remnant of my old prebuilt in my current PC)

ID: hilanuuYea I’m still working on cable management lol and it’s great, super fast definitely got a beast of a PC and since it’s future proofed hopefully I can get my hands on a 3090 and just slap it in there lol

I was shopping online for an additional ssd, and before I realized I had built another PC. I blame society.

SAME, started with a 2009 pre merger Compaq case, maxed out the 2009 parts in it best I could (AM2+ with DDR2, threw a Phenom ii x4 in it). Got a 580 armor black and white with new psu. The 580 was hella huge in that case and was lucky to have the pcie x16 as the top slot. Did some research, found out that the oem mobo is standard mATX dimensions, so searched for a motherboard that matches those dimensions closest and has the first x16 as the top slot. Eventually settled with the Gigabyte B450 Aorus M paired with a Ryzen 5 2600X and 2x8 ram @ 3000mhz. Cpu temps were great, but that oem case wasn’t meant to house a big ol gpu adn the 580 and psu were fighting for air from two small top side vents. So last Christmas, I finally got a new case. All I’ll say is I miss the inverted layout of that oem case, it was cool and different.

And what have we learned from this experience? Don't buy pre-builts with an expectation of upgrading down the line kids...Manufactures put so many hoops in front of you to be able to successfully do it, your time would be better spent training a dog to jump through the hoops, at least you could end up a viral vid somewhere...Glad you got something together you like in these strange times, and you'll be able to upgrade this in the future with out all the headache!

Nice build man! Question, how's the clearance with the LFII 280mm there at the top? Tight fit with the ram? I have the same case and would like that AIO.
ID: hilw1xaTight fit, not because of the ram or case, but because of the motherboard, the top end of the radiator towards the front fits with easy but the back end touches the motherboard plates so it’s ever so slightly off lol for ram though make sure you get low profile ram like the Corsair LPX, most RGB ram will be too tall for this radiator to fit

Yeah I’ll be honest that’s about how it goes with me. Upgraded cpu on 2 systems, ended up upgrading everything else, except only the current build has a PLANNED GPU upgrade after nearly a year. Not stock, but just got my old job back after 2 years. Excited.

Why did you need to upgrade the cooler? The 5800x runs hotter than the 5900x.

Hey OP, how did you mounted ALF to the cpu - normaly way or offset? Which rev of ALF II do you have?
ID: hincd4iPretty sure it’s 280 rev 4. Mounting on cpu was a bit tough, I used the am4 bracket included but had to shift it a bit
