Long story short, my beloved R9 390X died and I sent it back to AMD. It was out of warranty but, given the current state of GPU availability, I figured what the hell, let's see what it costs to have it repaired. Their response came back a couple days ago; it can't be repaired but they'll sell me a ROG-STRIX-RX580-8G-GAMING for $685.
I'm really not sure what to think, here. I'm not really up on the latest graphics cards. I know the market is crazy right now. A post on a different sub asking if this was a good deal yielded many responses to the tune of "fuck no," "jesus no," "definitely not," and the like. Responders also pointed out that the card in question is a few years old and that 3060s are going on eBay for about that price.
I've never sent a graphics card into the manufacturer before. Is this kind of offer pretty typical?
I just miss my R9 390X. I was perfectly happy with it before it went kaput. Had it five years and probably would've been content to use it for another five.
Edit: some people questioning the validity of this. When I get home from work I'll post some screenshots.
Edit2: Okay, time to come clean, here, a little bit. The RMA was actually through ASUS, not AMD. I'll admit I had a major brainfart, here. When I was thinking about which subreddit to post on for feedback, my brain just went straight to "well, it's an AMD card, let's post on the AMD sub." But, of course, the card was actually made by ASUS and so that's who I went through for the return. I feel like a real bonehead. Just for shits and gigs and to prove I'm not totally full of crap, though, I'll post the clarifying screenshots from ASUS support that I promised earlier:
Edit3: I just want to add that I was definitely NOT trying to besmirch anyone's name, here. I was honestly just looking for feedback. I loved my R9 390X and was super bummed when it died, and not just because of the current cost of GPUs. It was a great card. I also want to say that I was NOT just fishing for sympathy, as some people have claimed. I sent the card in because it was only $30 for the two-way shipping label and I was honestly hoping it could be repaired for a decent price. Some here have said that was naive, that companies simply don't do out-of-warranty repairs. Well, I don't know anything about that. Like I said, I loved my R9 390X and was truly hoping it could be brought back to life.

Never heard of a manufacturer doing that, but I've never sent in a card out of warranty. You could do better for $700.
Used you can get a used 1080ti for $600-$700 right now,
New you could get a brand new 6600 xt for $700 even at scalper prices.

Why would AMD be offering to sell you an Asus card? Are you sure you're dealing with AMD and not a 3rd party repair shop?

That sounds like a scam. This is AMD directly or a local company in charge of support?

R9 390X is way EOL and out of warranty. Also was this even a refrence R9 390x? Why would you hit up AMD for a warranty when (since you didn't indicate) it maybe a AIB card (lack of details calls into question the validity). You don't just blindly send a card into be RMA'd, you have to request an RMA first and then they provide instruction if you are even eligible, and how/were to send the card. With it being a EOL/Out of warranty they would have rejected the request from the start, as it would be a complete waste of time and resources for all parties involved. AMD is not going to try and sell you a 3rd party AIB that is 3 generations old. If anything if they were to "offer" to you directly it would be a current generation reference card. There is nothing in it for them to offer a very old 3rd party card as why would they even have 3rd party AIB cards in stock if they don't even have refrence cards of that generation in stock? That not inline with what they would or could do.
Somethings a bit off here. This sounds like a personal transaction (I wouldn’t know any RMA outfit to physically have a card and try to sell it to you for 2 times it’s MSRP). Even with the custom fans it maybe 400, but nearly 700 dollars for, what I can only assume is a used card as AMD discontinued the production of that line.
Call AMD’s compliance line and report this and ask what the policy is regarding the resale of RMA used and discontinued cards. Call the compliance department directly.

RMA department doesn't sell cards as far as I know, they generally will tell you it can't be fixed and will offer to recycle it or send it back to you at your expense.

Personnaly, I would not buy an RX 580 for $685, not only because it is too expensive, but because it is obsolete. Even with the current shortages, you could get a more modern graphic card for this price, like an RX 6600

Get screen shots of other reputable retailers prices and see if they'll beat those. In your situation it can't hurt to haggle.

For 685$ you can do a whole lot better. A 6600XT would be a much better deal at that price.

I think I paid $250-300 for mine brand new in 2018. They are nice cards but I wouldn't pay $700 for one.

Yes the price they’d offer definitely crazy, in case you sure it died then try to repair on local PC store instead of the manufacturer. Idk how often a company offer other product when they did a repairing.
In case you okay with other GPU, try to look at used market on Ebay or smt like that. Even GPU market is on craze, there is no way such expensive as that.

I've never sent in a GPU out of warranty, but that price for a 580 is insane. Obviously not something you should consider.
If I had that 390X, I'd take a look at what broke on the card with a multimeter. If it looks like it's just a small board component that broke, you could sell the card for maybe $30-60 on ebay for someone else to fix or use for parts.

If you live near a microcenter and are willing to bide your time a little, you can get a 6600 XT for $500.
